Secretion of inflammatory products from neutrophils can be induced by a combination of signals from ligated integrins and receptors for soluble, physiological agonists such as TNF. Here we identify pyk2 in primary human neutrophils; localize it to focal adhesions and podosomes; and demonstrate its tyrosine phosphorylation, activation, and association with paxillin during stimulation of adherent cells by TNF. Tyrphostin A9 emerged as the most potent and selective of 51 tyrosine kinase inhibitors tested against the TNF-induced respiratory burst.

The type 3 iodothyronine deiodinase (D3) is a selenoenzyme that inactivates thyroid hormones by removing a iodine from the 5-position of the tyrosyl ring. D3 is highly expressed in many tissues during the early stages of development, and its activity is regulated by selected growth factors and various hormones. To gain further insights into the structure, functional role, and regulation of this enzyme, we screened a mouse liver genomic library with a rat D3 complementary DNA probe and isolated a 12-kb clone coding for the Dio3.

Antimicrobial substances were produced by Bacillus subtilis BS 107 in a defined medium and isolated from culture filtrate by precipitation at pH 2.5. Active fractions were extracted in ethyl acetate, acetone, and 80% ethanol and purified by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) on silica gel plates developed with an ethanol-water mixture (2:1, v/v).

Fossils discovered in Lower Cretaceous (Aptian) rocks in the Tenere Desert of central Niger provide new information about spinosaurids, a peculiar group of piscivorous theropod dinosaurs. The remains, which represent a new genus and species, reveal the extreme elongation and transverse compression of the spinosaurid snout. The postcranial bones include blade-shaped vertebral spines that form a low sail over the hips.

SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine, also known as osteonectin/BM40) is a secreted Ca2+-binding glycoprotein that interacts with a range of extracellular matrix molecules, including collagen IV. It is widely expressed during embryogenesis, and in vitro studies have suggested roles in the regulation of cell adhesion and proliferation, and in the modulation of cytokine activity. In order to analyse the function of this protein in vivo, the endogenous Sparc locus was disrupted by homologous recombination in murine embryonic stem cells.

Research designed to identify the instructional and ecological conditions that foster the development of literacy skills in children with reading disabilities reflects a complex, multivariate enterprise. In essence, such research must be able to ultimately identify the teacher characteristics and instructional components that are critical for individual children and the interrelationships among these components. The intensity and duration of instruction will differ according to the severity of deficits in either single- or multiple-component reading processes.

Hypocotyl-derived calli of genotypes and segregating populations of Coffea arabica, differing in susceptibility to Colletotrichum kahawae, were used to produce cell suspensions and protoplasts which were exposed to partially purified culture filtrates (PPCFs) prepared from the pathogen. The growth and viability of PPCF-treated cells and protoplasts were measured using packed cell volume, fluorescein diacetate staining and a colorimetric assay involving the tetrazolium salt MTT. Differential responses of cells and protoplasts were influenced by genotype, time of exposure and PPCF concentration.

Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) fossils discovered in the Kem Kem region of Morocco include large predatory dinosaurs that inhabited Africa as it drifted into geographic isolation. One, represented by a skull approximately 1.6 meters in length, is an advanced allosauroid referable to the African genus Carcharodontosaurus.

Infantile autism is a syndrome of unknown aetiology and unknown neuro-anatomic substrate. The authors report a histological study of the brain of a well-documented 16-year-old female with autistic syndrome and severe mental retardation, using direct microscopic examination of the whole brain. The major findings are low brain weight, a thin corpus callosum and ventricular dilatation.

We describe two patients with severe, isolated, congenital dysphagia caused by paralysis of the pharyngeal muscles, who recovered at the ages of 40 months and 20 months, respectively. No other evidence of neurologic or muscular dysfunction was present except for a transient paralysis of the adductors of the vocal cords in one child. Radiocinematographic studies showed paralysis of the pharyngeal stage of swallowing, with minimal involvement of the oral stage.

Four cases of congenital dysfunction of major peripheral nerves are reported and discussed. The first patient was a girl born by spontaneous delivery with an area of skin and muscle necrosis on the dorsal aspect of the forearm and a palsy of the three major nerves of the upper limb. The second patient was a boy born by caesarean section with the same necrotic lesions and a palsy of the ulnar and median nerve.

The cytological features, origin, migration, and fate of the subpial granular layer cells of the human embryonic cerebral cortex are studied with light and electron microscopy, Golgi impregnations, and immunocytochemical staining with the microtubule associated protein 2 and glial fibrillary acidic protein antibodies. Subpial granular layer (SGL) cells form a distinct neuronal population in the molecular layer, characterized by a small dark nucleus with abundant chromatin clumps and prominent nucleoli, and a lightly stained cytoplasm containing few organelles. Somata and processes of SGL cells are intensively stained with microtubule-associated protein 2 antibody but do not express glial fibrillary acidic protein antibody.

At each prenatal visit they were tested for serologic data and cytomegalovirus excretion in urine, saliva, and cervical secretions.

The effect of Alternaria solani culture filtrate on adventitious shoot regeneration from tuber discs was evaluated using five potato cultivars, which were selected based on their field reaction to Alternaria solani and which represented a range of disease reactions. The culture filtrate stimulated regeneration, a response that could prove to be very useful in the wider utilization of transformation and in vitro selection technology.
