The use of mobile devices for information sharing in a technology-supported model of care in A&E.

Using a case study as an example, this paper illustrates the current model of care in Accident and Emergency (A & E); in particular, the 'cells' in which data/information is stored and how explicit and accessible it is (or is not) to healthcare professionals. It is a model of care which may be summed up as static information/dynamic clinicians. This paper then describes how mobile devices may be used to track patients through an A&E department.

A Technology-assisted approach to integrating healthcare in the community.

The fragmentary nature of healthcare provision in the United Kingdom presents particular problems for many patients with vascular disease. The management and organization of this disease are also costly for the National Health Service (NHS). Hence, so any attempt to keep hospital visits to the minimum while at the same time aiding effective treatment is to be welcomed.

Clinical ICT systems: augmenting case management.

In order to improve the diagnosis and subsequent care given to patients, health-care workers involved in the management of their care, as well as the treatment itself, are increasingly looking at the role that information and communication technologies (ICTs) can play in supporting the complex interactions between patient, doctor or nurse, consultant and medical equipment. Effective communication both amongst health-care workers and between health-care workers and their patients in both primary and secondary care is vital; ICTs can play an important role in this. In this paper possible interpretations given to the term "telemedicine" are discussed, and then attention is turned to the challenges involved in human interaction and the role of ICTs.
