Transilluminator burns in the neonatal intensive care unit: a mimicker of more serious disease.

We report an outbreak of erythematous to purpuric papules and vesicles in four neonates whose lesions arose within a 72-hour period in a neonatal intensive care unit. As isolated lesions, the clinical presentation mimicked cutaneous aspergillosis. Ultimately, because of the number of patients with similar lesions, an exogenous source was suspected and determined to be a faulty transillumination device.

Yellow nail syndrome in three siblings: a randomized double-blind trial of topical vitamin E.

Yellow nail syndrome is an uncommon disorder characterized by dystrophic nails, lymphedema, and respiratory disease. It has rarely been reported in children and this is the first report of congenital yellow nails in siblings. The purpose of this study was to determine whether topical vitamin E applied to the nail plates and periungual skin would affect the growth rate or appearance of the fingernails in patients with congenital yellow nail syndrome.

Toll-like receptors: applications to dermatologic disease.

Unlabelled: Toll-like receptors are a recently identified group of receptors that are an important component of the immune system. Thus far, ten different receptors have been identified and have unique tissue distribution, ligand binding properties, cellular signaling pathways, and cytokine production profiles. Importantly, ligand binding has been shown to regulate both the adaptive and host immune response; thus, defects in this pathway have the potential to lead to increased susceptibility to infection and inflammatory dysregulation.
