Background: To compare functional anatomy of breast peri-areolar and peri-tumoral lymphatic drainage basins.
Methods: Fifteen breast cancer patients received simultaneous peri-areolar (intradermal) and peri-tumoral (intraparenchymal) injections of human polyclonal immunoglobulin (HIG) labeled with (99m)Tc and (111)In 2 to 4 h before axillary lymph node clearance surgery. Resected nodes (range 5-20; median 16) were individually counted for (99m)Tc and (111)In in a well-counter and ranked according to activity content (echelon).
Background: The efficacy of screening by mammography has been shown in randomised controlled trials in women aged 50 years and older, but is less clear in younger women. A meta-analysis of all previous trials showed a 15% mortality reduction in invited women aged 40-49 years at study entry, but this finding could be due in part to screening of women after age 50 years. The Age trial was designed to study the effect on mortality of inviting women for annual mammography from age 40 years.

The study was approved by the local ethics research committee, and informed consent was obtained from all patients. The size and shape of tumor regions on terahertz images were compared with those identified at histopathologic examination of the imaged section.

We conducted a randomized trial of 53,890 invited and 106,971 control United Kingdom women who were recruited only from those aged 40 years, with central review of cancer histology. Here, we report that the transcription factor BCL-6 is expressed in mammary epithelium in nonpregnant animals as well as during early pregnancy. When overexpressed in the nontransformed EpH4 mammary epithelial cell line, BCL-6 prevents the STAT-driven expression of the milk protein beta-casein and duct formation, and prevents apoptosis.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFMetaphase comparative genomic hybridization was used to analyze the spectrum of genetic alterations in 141 epithelial ovarian cancers from BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers, individuals with familial non-BRCA1/2 epithelial ovarian cancer, and women with nonfamilial epithelial ovarian cancer. Multiple genetic alterations were identified in almost all tumors. The high frequency with which some alterations were identified suggests the location of genes that are commonly altered during ovarian tumor development.
