Numerous problem lists have been developed since the introduction of the Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR). General medical, surgical, psychiatric and rehabilitation settings have been found to be appropriate for the POMR system. The development of a standard problem list for use in brain injury rehabilitation and its application in a typical case are described.

The effects of temperature and attractants on chemotaxis in psychrotrophic Pseudomonas fluorescens were examined using the Adler capillary assay technique. Several organic acids, amino acids, and uronic acids were shown to be attractants, whereas glucose and its oxidation products, gluconate and 2-ketogluconate, elicited no detectable response. Chemotaxis toward many attractants was dependent on prior growth of the microorganism with these compounds.

Six squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) participated in two ex,eriments examining how central (preoptic/anterior hypothalamic, Tpo) and peripheral (ambient, Ta, or mean skin, Tsk) temperatures influence peripheral vasomotion. In the first experiment, four monkeys with unilateral preoptic thermodes were exposed to a wide range of central (23 degrees C less than Tpo less than 44 degrees C) and peripheral (10 degrees C less than Ta less than 38 degrees C) temperatures. Results indicated that the skin of both tail and foot vasodilates at discrete but unique Ta thresholds (Tpo congruent to 39 degrees C) and that raising Tpo lowers these thresholds.

The object of this work was to define a model using hypotonically loaded erythrocytes as a vehicle to target drugs to the reticuloendothelial system (RES). The optimum hemolytic event was found to occur at 100 mOsm/kg using a 0.5-min exposure at 0 degrees C.

Hearts from patients dying with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were examined for right ventricular mass and coronary arterial vascular bed size. Normal hearts obtained from patients dying of other causes were also examined for comparison. The relationship between the size of the vascular bed and ventricular mass was examined and a definite but low correlation was found.

Patients undergoing surgery for herniated lumbar discs were evaluated prospectively with a battery of psychological tests. Personality factors in patients having a good outcome were compared to those in patients having a bad outcome. Both groups had similar surgical findings.

Hydroxyproline metabolism was evaluated in two sisters with hydroxyprolinemia and their mother. 33 and 21% of an oral hydroxyproline load (200 mg/kg) was excreted by the sisters, 5.4% by the mother, and 1.

Growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens in batch culture with glucose and organic acids resulted in typical diauxic responses at 30 degrees C but no detectable diauxic lag at 5 degrees C. At 30 degrees C, organic acids were preferentially utilized during the first growth phase. Glucose utilization was delayed until onset of the second growth phase.

Analysis of a series of 352 femoral angiograms revealed that "blind" cannulation of the femoral artery distal to an occluded aorta or iliac artery is technically feasible in most patients. The vessel is usually patent even when the pulse is absent. Blind cannulation is not necessary for satisfactory peripheral angiography in all cases, but it is useful whenever visualization of the peripheral circulation is unsatisfactory following aortic injection.

PUVA therapy is a promising new entity for treatment of a number of dermatologic diseases including psoriasis, mycosis fungoides, and vitiligo. A safe and rational approach to the management of a phototherapy center has been presented, and is intended to serve as a personal guideline for those treating patients with this modality.

PUVA therapy has proved to be beneficial for dermatologic conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, and mycosis fungoides. Attempts have been made to treat other diseases with the modality; five patients with pityriasis rubra pilaris were treated, with only a partial response noted in one. A poor to fair response was seen in treating a small group of patients with cystic acne, atopic dermatitis, and neurodermatitis.

Comparisons have been made of the DNA polymerases of normal human lung and cecum, primary carcinomas of human lung, breast, and cecum, and resting and regeneration rat liver. The picture for the normal human tissues is similar to the one for unstimulated rat liver, that for the human carcinomas resembles regenerating rat liver. The human tissues contain two polymerases with sedimentation coefficients of about 3 and 7 S, the enzymes are restricted to the nucleus, and the specific activities of the 7 S polymerase, but not of the 3 S enzyme, are elevated in the cancers.

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare and sometimes fatal disease of unknown cause and pathogenesis. Results of recent studies suggest that it is an immune disorder probably caused by the production of autoantibodies to possibly the mucopolysaccharides. Perpetuation of the cartilage inflammation may be maintained by a proteolytic process.
