A patient with chronic cough and recent dysphagia was found to have a retrotracheal mass extending into the visceral mediastinum on chest roentgenogram. A computed tomographic scan confirmed a retrotracheal lesion, which was believed to be of lymphatic origin. A thyroid scan demonstrated downward displacement of the left lobe but little uptake in the mass.

Cells from early-passage cultures of normal and malignant human tissues were analyzed for the presence of multiple nucleoli and tri- or multipolar mitoses; these properties are characteristic of malignant cell populations in tissue sections. For the cell types examined the presence of tri- or multipolar mitoses was characteristic of cells of malignant origin. Within epithelial cell populations, cells containing more than 4 nucleoli were found in populations of malignant but not of normal origin; this distinction did not apply to fibroblast populations.

The vitamin K dependent carboxylase activates the glutamyl gamma-CH of substrate peptides for carboxylation by producing a gamma-glutamyl free radical, a gamma-glutamyl carbanion, or through a concerted carboxylation. We propose to intercept the putative gamma-glutamyl free radical by the intramolecular rearrangement of a substrate containing the alpha,beta-cyclopropane analogue of glutamic acid. The rearrangement of cyclopropylcarbinyl radicals into 2-butenyl radicals is rapid, exothermic, and considered diagnostic of free-radical formation.

Sixty newly hospitalized patients with borderline personality disorder who began psychotherapy were followed for 6 months. Thirty-six discontinued their therapy--most often (N = 26) this was due to covert opposition, familial resistance, or angry dissatisfaction with treatment. The dropouts were healthier on some baseline measures than those who continued in therapy.

The ability to continuously monitor the delicate balance between blood flow and oxygen consumption would be a great asset in the study of myocardial ischemia. The present study was performed, in anesthetized dogs, to validate the use of encased polargraphic oxygen electrodes in the study of myocardial ischemia. Polargraphic oxygen electrodes were placed in the area to be rendered ischemic at fixed tissue depths of 3 mm (epicardium) and 9 mm (endocardium).

Acute upper airway obstruction is a potentially life-threatening event. The most common causes include foreign body inhalation, thermal injury, inflammation, angioedema and trauma. Airway obstruction caused by submucosal extension of subcutaneous emphysema has only been previously reported once.

Clinical anecdotal reports have indicated a probably additive and/or synergistic response to the co-ingestion of ethyl alcohol and methadone. This study investigated the possible explanations for this observations, which may be associated with alterations of the plasma concentration dynamics of methadone and alcohol in the rat. Plasma concentrations of ethanol, methadone or both were followed over an eight hour period following substance administration.

Cells from three patients with early gonadal failure and a balanced reciprocal translocation involving the long arm of the X chromosome and an autosome were studied. Fibroblasts from a patient with a similar balanced reciprocal translocation but normal reproductive capabilities were also studied. Two of the four patients were found to have serologically detectable H-Y antigen on their cells.
