Background And Objectives: Neurology residents serve as frontline teachers for junior trainees but often lack formal training in medical education. We developed a novel longitudinal curriculum to enhance the teaching skills and educational leadership of residents interested in pursuing careers as clinician-educators.

Methods And Curriculum Description: We developed and piloted a Neurology Clinician-Educator Program (NCEP) with the following goals: (1) improve resident satisfaction with opportunities to develop teaching skills, (2) improve resident satisfaction with opportunities to transition into a clinician-educator role after training, and (3) enhance resident teaching skills using evidence-based strategies.

Objective: To describe a pragmatic process for translating quality improvement (QI) projects into published manuscripts.

Scope: Types of QI work that are generalizable and have broad relevance (to journals and readers), design principles that are important for publishable QI work, how QI manuscript organization might differ from biomedical manuscripts, how to use and not to use Standards for Quality Improvement Reporting Excellence and other guidelines, pitfalls, and how to avoid/repair them.

Article Synopsis
  • The 2023 Match cycle featured virtual interviews for adult neurology residency programs, but some places offered optional in-person second-look events after the interviews.
  • Mayo Clinic wanted to know what applicants thought about these events, so they surveyed those who interviewed there.
  • Many applicants enjoyed visiting the campus and meeting residents in person, and about half of those who attended the second-look event changed their opinions on which programs they preferred.

  • Large language models (LLMs) are AI systems that can generate and understand human-like language, which might benefit neurology-related tasks, but their effectiveness in real clinical scenarios is still uncertain.
  • The article highlights several limitations of LLMs in healthcare, including issues like limited clinical reasoning and biases, alongside practical challenges such as costs and infrastructure needs.
  • To successfully integrate LLMs into clinical practice, healthcare organizations must foster an AI-friendly culture, engage stakeholders, and prioritize patient data privacy while ensuring proper testing and monitoring to mitigate biases.

Article Synopsis
  • - Recent studies show that lecanemab can slow cognitive and functional decline in early Alzheimer's disease (AD), making it a promising treatment option alongside other monoclonal antibodies targeting β-amyloid.
  • - The introduction of these treatments involves significant risks and challenges that differ from current AD management, requiring changes in clinical practices and infrastructure for effective use.
  • - This article offers guidance for neurologists on implementing antiamyloid therapies, emphasizing patient selection, treatment monitoring, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the importance of evolving practices to improve patient outcomes.

Background And Objectives: The primary objective is to examine potential racial and ethnic (R/E) disparities in ambulatory neurology quality measures within the American Academy of Neurology Axon Registry. R/E disparities in neurologic US morbidity and mortality have been clearly documented. Despite these findings, there have been no nationwide examinations of how ambulatory neurologic care affects these negative health outcomes.

There is a growing number of forcibly displaced persons (FDPs) worldwide. With more than 100 million people forcibly displaced today, there is an urgent mandate to understand the neurologic care needs of this population and how neurologists and other health care workers can most effectively provide that care. In this Emerging Issues in Neurology article, we attempt to (1) define the scope of the problem of providing neurologic care to FDPs, (2) highlight commonly encountered clinical challenges related to neurologic care of FDPs, and (3) provide useful clinical information for neurologists and other clinicians who deliver care to FDPs with neurologic needs.

We describe a process of organizational strategic future forecasting, with a horizon of 2035, as implemented by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) on behalf of its members, and as a model approach for other organizations. The participants were members of the 2018-2020 AAN Boards of Directors and Executive Team, moderated by a consultant with expertise in future forecasting. Four predetermined model scenarios of import to our field (1 "expectable," 1 "challenging," and 2 "visionary") were discussed in small groups, with alternative scenarios developed in specific domains.
