Introduction: Free radical-mediated oxidative renal tubular injury secondary to hyperoxaluria is a proposed mechanism in the formation of calcium oxalate stones. Vitamin E, an important physiologic antioxidant, has been shown in rat models to prevent calcium oxalate crystal deposition. Our objective was to determine if low dietary vitamin E intake was associated with a higher incidence of stones.

In Australia, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a largely hidden disability that is currently under-recognized, under-resourced, and under- or misdiagnosed. Unsurprisingly, efforts to prevent FASD in urban Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are lacking. Further, mainstream approaches are not compatible with diverse and distinct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of approaching family, pregnancy, and parenting life.

In addition to the α, β, and γ subunits of ENaC, human salt-sensing taste receptor cells (TRCs) also express the δ-subunit. At present, it is not clear if the expression and function of the ENaC δ-subunit in human salt-sensing TRCs is also modulated by the ENaC regulatory hormones and intracellular signaling effectors known to modulate salt responses in rodent TRCs. Here, we used molecular techniques to demonstrate that the G-protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER1), the transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1), and components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) are expressed in δ-ENaC-positive cultured adult human fungiform (HBO) taste cells.

In addition to the sense of taste and olfaction, chemesthesis, the sensation of irritation, pungency, cooling, warmth, or burning elicited by spices and herbs, plays a central role in food consumption. Many plant-derived molecules demonstrate their chemesthetic properties via the opening of transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels. TRPA1 and TRPV1 are structurally related thermosensitive cation channels and are often co-expressed in sensory nerve endings.

With tobacco commonly used for stress relief, smoking cessation during pregnancy can present challenges for women facing stressful circumstances. This can be pronounced for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who experience disproportionately high smoking rates during pregnancy and also have a greater intersection of stressors from social disadvantage, institutional racism and trauma. To contribute understandings into how women can be best supported at this time, this study identified the features of value of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pregnancy smoking cessation program that addressed the contexts of women's lives in culturally affirming and strength-based ways.

The endocannabinoid, anandamide (AEA), stimulates cannabinoid receptors (CBRs) and is enriched in the kidney, especially the renal medulla. AEA infused into the renal outer medulla of mice stimulates urine flow rate and salt excretion. Here we show that these effects are blocked by the CBR type 1 (CB1) inverse agonist, rimonabant.

Amyloid of the ureter is a rare disease with less than 25 cases reported in the literature. Despite being rare, it remains an important entity as it is typically confused with a primary neoplastic process of the urinary system. We report a case of a 68-year-old male with a history of cutaneous amyloid with late presentation of bilateral ureteral involvement.

Kokumi taste substances exemplified by γ-glutamyl peptides and Maillard Peptides modulate salt and umami tastes. However, the underlying mechanism for their action has not been delineated. Here, we investigated the effects of a kokumi taste active and inactive peptide fraction (500-10,000 Da) isolated from mature (FII) and immature (FII) Ganjang, a typical Korean soy sauce, on salt and umami taste responses in humans and rodents.

Background: While advancements in surgery and reduced complication rates have made total knee arthroplasty (TKA) one of the most successful and cost-effective procedures in orthopaedic surgery, routine postoperative laboratory tests are still being ordered without evidence as to their necessity. With expansion of the bundled payment models, there may exist an opportunity to cut overall costs while maintaining quality of care by eliminating unnecessary interventions. The objective of this study was to examine the utility of routine postoperative laboratory tests in TKA.

Background: Pregnancy can be a time of joy and a time of significant stress. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (hereafter, respectfully, Indigenous) women, cigarette smoking, even during pregnancy, is a socially sanctioned behavioural response to stress. Indigenous women smoke during pregnancy at higher rates than their non-Indigenous counterparts.

In gastrointestinal smooth muscle, acetylcholine induced muscle contraction is biphasic, initial peak followed by sustained contraction. Contraction is regulated by phosphorylation of 20 kDa myosin light chain (MLC) at Ser19, interaction of actin and myosin, and actin polymerization. The present study characterized the signaling mechanisms involved in actin polymerization during initial and sustained muscle contraction in response to muscarinic M3 receptor activation in gastric smooth muscle cells by targeting the effectors of initial (phospholipase C (PLC)-β/Ca2+ pathway) and sustained (RhoA/focal adhesion kinase (FAK)/Rho kinase pathway) contraction.

Article Synopsis
  • CHRNs (cholinergic receptors) are found in certain human taste cells, specifically HBO cells, and their expression is affected by exposure to nicotine and ethanol, with variations based on dose and duration.* -
  • The study revealed that exposing HBO cells to nicotine or ethanol increases CHRN mRNA and protein expression, while simultaneous exposure to both substances results in a smaller increase than when exposed to either one alone.* -
  • Additionally, CHRNs in HBO cells influence calcium ion levels, and nicotine exposure decreases BDNF levels within these cells while increasing its release into the media, suggesting a role in neuropeptide regulation.*

Nicotine evokes chorda tympani (CT) taste nerve responses and an aversive behavior in Trpm5 knockout (KO) mice. The agonists and antagonists of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) modulate neural and behavioral responses to nicotine in wildtype (WT) mice, Trpm5 KO mice and rats. This indicates that nicotine evokes bitter taste by activating a Trpm5-dependent pathway and a Trpm5-independent but nAChR-dependent pathway.

During postnatal development rats demonstrate an age-dependent increase in NaCl chorda tympani (CT) responses and the number of functional apical amiloride-sensitive epithelial Na+ channels (ENaCs) in salt sensing fungiform (FF) taste receptor cells (TRCs). Currently, the intracellular signals that regulate the postnatal development of salt taste have not been identified. We investigated the effect of cAMP, a downstream signal for arginine vasopressin (AVP) action, on the postnatal development of NaCl responses in 19-23 day old rats.

In addition to the T2R bitter taste receptors, neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have recently been shown to be involved in the bitter taste transduction of nicotine, acetylcholine and ethanol. However, at present it is not clear if nAChRs are expressed in enteroendocrine cells other than beta cells of the pancreas and enterochromaffin cells, and if they play a role in the synthesis and release of neurohumoral peptides. Accordingly, we investigated the expression and functional role of nAChRs in enteroendocrine STC-1 cells.
