Article Synopsis
  • * Taurine (TAU), an essential amino acid with protective properties against tissue toxicity from chemotherapy, was hypothesized to mitigate the adverse effects of 5-FU, particularly in relation to colorectal cancer.
  • * In a study with rats, combinations of taurine and 5-FU showed promising results, reducing adenocarcinoma occurrence compared to 5-FU alone, suggesting that taurine may enhance the effectiveness of 5-FU

Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a non-protein β-amino acid essential for cellular homeostasis, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties that are crucial for life maintenance. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of taurine administration on hippocampal neurogenesis, neuronal preservation, or reverse damage in rats exposed to forced ethanol consumption in an animal model. Wistar rats were treated with ethanol (EtOH) for a 28-day period (5% in the 1st week, 10% in the 2nd week, and 20% in the 3rd and 4th weeks).

Introduction: Non-metastatic, castration-resistant prostate cancer (nmCRPC) is an important clinical stage of prostate cancer, prior to morbidity and mortality from clinical metastases. In particular, the introduction of novel androgen-receptor signaling inhibitors (ARSi) has changed the therapeutic landscape in nmCRPC. Given recent developments in this field, we update our recommendations for the management of nmCRPC.

Dengue remains a major public health problem in the Philippines. In this study, we determined the circulating dengue serotypes in the Philippines during the 2015-2017 outbreaks using a total of 678 serum samples from 537 individual dengue patients. Following an increase in the number of DENV-4 patients in recent years, we conducted a comprehensive molecular and epidemiology analysis on the DENV-4 strains isolated recently in the Philippines.

Dengue virus (DENV) infection is a major public health problem worldwide; however, specific antiviral drugs against it are not available. Hence, identifying effective antiviral agents for the prevention of DENV infection is important. In this study, we showed that the reportedly highly biologically active green-tea component epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) inhibited dengue virus infection regardless of infecting serotype, but no or minimal inhibition was observed with other flaviviruses, including Japanese encephalitis virus, yellow fever virus, and Zika virus.

For the development of effective treatment strategies for Japanese encephalitis (JE), it is important to identify the viral factors causing severe disease during JE virus (JEV) infection. In this study, we assessed whether amino acid substitutions are critical factors for higher mortality of JaTH160 compared with JaOArS982 in mice using the technique of infectious cDNA clones. We raised the possibility that two amino acids of C and NS3 of JaTH160 may contribute to increased mortality in mice.

It is extremely important that health professionals involved in invasive procedures such as central venous access have a thorough knowledge of thoracic vascular anatomy. Persistent left superior vena cava is the most common congenital thoracic venous abnormality and is generally diagnosed as an incidental finding. We present the case of a 14-year-old female patient in whom a persistent left superior vena cava was diagnosed as an incidental finding of a control imaging exam after placement of a totally implantable venous catheter.
