How are the experiences and needs of families of individuals with mental illness reflected in medical education guidelines?

Objective: This descriptive study explored the extent that medical education curriculum guidelines contained content about the experiences and needs of family members of people with serious mental illness.

Methods: Key family-focused-literature themes about the experiences and needs of families of individuals with mental illness were drawn from a review of over 6,000 sources in the mental health practice literature that were identified within a systematic search and thematic development process. The study identified the extent and nature of family-focused key literature themes as reflected in medical education curriculum guidelines for psychiatry and primary care practice specialties of family practice, internal medicine, and pediatrics.

Relaxation and guided imagery program in patients with breast cancer undergoing radiotherapy is not associated with neuroimmunomodulatory effects.

Objective: Treatment of breast cancer is usually associated with significant psychological stress. In this study, we examined the effects of relaxation and visualization therapy (RVT) on psychological distress, cortisol levels, and immunological parameters of breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy.

Methods: Participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental (n=20) who underwent group RVT for 24 consecutive days or control group (n=14) who were on radiotherapy only.

Nutritional state influences shoaling preference for familiars.

Preferences for grouping with familiar individuals are shown in many animal species, including the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Shoaling with familiars is advantageous because of more precise anti-predator behaviours or more stable dominance hierarchies. Additionally, associations with familiar individuals facilitate the evolution of altruistic behaviour.

The sediment of a core collected about 2 km north of Paquetá Island, Guanabara Bay, was submitted to pollen analysis, in order to recognize the dynamics of the regional vegetation, and the anthropic influence. In vitro susceptibility to fungicides by invertebrate-pathogenic and saprobic fungi.

The central amygdala regulates sodium intake in sodium-depleted rats: role of 5-HT3 and 5-HT2C receptors.

In the present paper, we have evaluated the participation of 5-HT(3) and 5-HT(2C) receptors in the central amygdala (CeA) in the regulation of water and salt intake in sodium-depleted rats. m-CPBG-induced pharmacological activation of 5-HT(3) receptors located in the CeA resulted in a significant reduction in salt intake in sodium-depleted rats. This antinatriorexic effect of m-CPBG was reverted by pretreatment with the selective 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist ondansetron.

Association between breastfeeding duration and mandibular retrusion: a cross-sectional study of children in the mixed dentition.

Introduction: In this study, we examined the relationships among breastfeeding duration, nonnutritive infantile sucking habits, Class II facial patterns with mandibular retrusion, and Class II dental relationships.

Methods: A sample of 249 children in the mixed dentition was examined by 2 orthodontists. Data about the duration of breastfeeding and nonnutritive sucking habits were obtained by written questionnaires answered by the parents.

Role of 5-HT3 and 5-HT2C receptors located within the medial amygdala in the control of salt intake in sodium-depleted rats.

In the present study, we investigated the role of 5-HT(3) and 5-HT(2C) receptors located within the medial amygdala (MeA) in the control of water and salt intake in sodium-depleted rats. Pharmacological activation of 5-HT(3) receptors located in the medial amygdala by the selective 5-HT(3) receptor agonist m-CPBG significantly reduced salt intake in sodium-depleted rats, an effect that is reverted by pretreatment with the selective 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist ondansetron. In addition, the injection of ondansetron alone into the medial amygdala had no effect on salt intake in sodium-depleted and in sodium-repleted rats.

Impact of moisture on in vitro germination of Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana and their activity on Triatoma infestans.

The in vitro germination of 11 Metarhizium anisopliae and 11 Beauveria bassiana isolates originating from substrates collected in rural peridomestic areas in Central Brazil where triatomines are common was tested. Conidia completed germination up to 24 h after exposure to water activity of > 0.99 aw in all isolates tested.

Use of sulfoaluminate cement and bottom ash in the solidification/stabilization of galvanic sludge.

Solidification/stabilization (S/S) process can improve the physical characteristics of wastes, reduce their leaching and limit the solubility of their heavy metals. The identification of binders able to assume the fixation of contaminants is essential for the success of the technique. Prevalence and genetic diversity of astroviruses in children with and without diarrhea in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil.

Human astroviruses (HAstV) have been increasingly identified as important etiological agents of acute gastroenteritis in children up to five years old. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and genotype diversity of HAstV in children with symptomatic and asymptomatic infections in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. From June 1997 to July 1999 a total of 183 fecal samples 84 from symptomatic and 99 from asymptomatic children were tested by enzyme immunoassay for HAstV.

Rotavirus serotypes and electropherotypes identified among hospitalised children in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil.

During June 1997-June 1999 rotavirus infection was screened in infants aged up to 2 years and hospitalised with acute diarrhoea in São Luís, Northeastern Brazil. Altogether, 128 stool samples were collected from diarrhoeic patients and additional 122 faecal specimens from age and temporal matched inpatients without diarrhoea were obtained; rotavirus positivity rates for these groups were 32.0% (41/128) and 9.

Potential of oil-based formulations of Beauveria bassiana to control Triatoma infestans.

The in vitro development of Beauveria bassiana conidia was monitored when immersed in six concentrations of seven non-ionic (MP 6400, MP 600, Renex 60, Renex 95, Span 80, Tween 20 and Tween 80) and three anionic (DOS 75, Hostapaval BVQ 9 and Surfax 220) surfactants and 11 vegetable oils (linseed, soybean, groundnut, rapeseed, thistle, sunflower, olive, sesame, corn, castor, and babassu). The influence of the oils on the settling behavior of Triatoma infestans nymphs and the activity of an oil-water formulation of the fungus against this vector under laboratory and simulated field conditions were also determined. In this work, we present a theoretical study on elastic electron collisions from three isoelectronic free radicals (CNN, NCN, and CCO) in the low incident energy range. More specifically, calculated differential, integral, and momentum transfer cross sections are reported in the 1-30 eV energy range. Calculations are performed in the static-exchange and static-exchange-polarization levels.

Activity of oil-formulated Beauveria bassiana against Triatoma sordida in peridomestic areas in Central Brazil.

Pathogenicity of Evlachovaea sp (Hyphomycetes), a new species isolated from Triatoma sordida, in Chagas' disease vectors.

Evlachovaea sp was tested on nymphs of 5 Triatoma spp 5 Rhodnius spp, Panstrongylus herreri and Dipetalogaster maximus at 25 degrees C, 75% humidity and humidity >98%. Most species showed susceptibility to fungal infection at high humidity. Mortality was reduced at 75% humidity.

Although the mechanisms underlying these changes are still unknown, it has been speculated that this could be related to a dysfunction in FAS/CD95 expression in naive or memory cells.
