Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the presence of asymptomatic tuberculosis among elderly patients with active tuberculosis, finding that 67.7% of these patients were asymptomatic.
  • The analysis included nine studies with over 364,000 elderly individuals, and the highest rates of asymptomatic cases were found in high-burden countries and among those screened using multiple strategies.
  • Results indicate a need for increased awareness and screening for tuberculosis in the elderly, especially as the proportion of asymptomatic cases varied among different study settings and over time.

GmABCI5 and GmABCI13 enhance Al tolerance through regulating the composition of root cell wall, and in this process, GmABCI5 and GmABCI13 may act in the form of a complex. Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a major factor limiting plant growth in acidic soils. ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are involved in plant tolerance to various environmental stresses.

Article Synopsis
  • Exposure to toxic metals like lead and arsenic is linked to increased risks of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), but the exact mechanisms are still unclear.
  • A study analyzed the impacts of these metals on gut microbiota and cardiometabolic health in 178 adults of African descent, revealing significant associations between high metal levels and various health markers such as BMI and blood glucose.
  • The findings suggest that specific gut microbiome taxa are influenced by lead and arsenic exposure, potentially contributing to metabolic issues, particularly through pathways related to porphyrin metabolism.

Continuous exposure to environmental hypoxia (11% O) has been shown to markedly slow the progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in a mouse model of mitochondrial optic neuropathy with RGC-specific deletion of the key mitochondrial complex I accessory subunit ndufs4. As a first step toward identifying the therapeutic mechanism of hypoxia in this model, we conducted a series of experiments to investigate the role of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) regulatory pathway in RGC neuroprotection. Vglut2-Cre; ndufs4 mice were crossed with strains bearing floxed alleles of the negative HIF regulatory vhl or of the two major HIF α-subunit isoforms, Hif1α and Hif2α.

Thorough investigation into the laws governing frozen rock damage in high-altitude and cold regions can offer valuable insights for advancing infrastructure construction, ecological environment protection, and sustainable development on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. This study combined with the seasonal variation patterns of frozen rocks in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, and processed the rock samples using a freeze-thaw interval of -20 °C~20 °C. Uniaxial compression test was conducted based on the MTS816 rock mechanics testing system.

Objective: Metal and metalloid exposures (hereafter "metals") are associated with adverse health outcomes, including type 2 diabetes; however, previous studies were largely cross-sectional or underpowered. Furthermore, underserved racial and ethnic groups are underrepresented in environmental health research despite having higher rates of type 2 diabetes and a greater risk of metal exposures. Consequently, we evaluated continuous glycemic traits in relation to baseline urinary toxic metal, essential metal, and metal mixtures in a cohort of Mexican American adults.

This work details a novel application of MgAl-LDH nanoflowers, applied in the fabrication of humidity sensors using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). An oscillating circuit approach has been utilized to thoroughly investigate the humidity detection characteristics of QCM sensors that are fabricated using MgAl-LDH nanoflowers. The examination encompassed various parameters such as the sensors' response, humidity hysteresis, repeatability, and stability.

Background: Arsenic, cadmium, and lead are toxic elements that widely contaminate our environment. These toxicants are associated with acute and chronic health problems, and evidence suggests that minority communities, including Hispanic/Latino Americans, are disproportionately exposed. Few studies have assessed culturally specific predictors of exposure to understand the potential drivers of racial/ethnic exposure disparities.

The stability and gate reliability of AlGaN/GaN metal-insulator-semiconductor high-electron-mobility transistors (MIS-HEMTs) with alternating O plasma treatment were systematically investigated in this article. It was found that the conduction band offset at the AlO/AlGaN interface was elevated to 2.4 eV, which contributed to the suppressed gate leakage current.
