The effect of rosuvastatin (Ros) on cognitive function and anxiety-like behaviour in ovariectomized rats were evaluated. Eighteen female Wistar rats (218-310 g, 6-8 months old) were allocated into sham ( = 6), ovariectomy (Ovx,  = 6) or Ovx + Ros (up to eighth week  = 6, then  = 4) groups. Ros was administered at 20 mg/kg/day by oral gavage for 12 weeks.

Creation of a State Drug Shortage Dashboard in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Drug shortages are anticipated to worsen with time as the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues. The aim of this study is to track drug shortages within Illinois and identify causes and trends to this time-sensitive problem. In order to communicate between health systems within the state, the Illinois Council of Health-System Pharmacists (ICHP) developed a medication shortage dashboard, which collects information from health systems in the state on current drug shortages.

Objectives: Organ damage due to long cold ischemia time remains a hurdle in transplantation. In this preliminary animal study, we compared the new Baskent University Preservation Solution (BUPS) with the University of Wisconsin (UW) and histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) solutions.

In the bone microenvironment, the c-fms proto-oncogene that encodes for the CSF-1 receptor, along with CSF-1, serves as one critical cytokine/receptor pair, functioning in paracrine and autocrine fashion. Previous studies concentrated on the effect of inhibition of host (mouse) c-fms on bone metastasis, with resulting decrease in osteolysis and bone metastases as a paracrine effect.

Challenges of withdrawal from chronic antidepressant medication: a healing odyssey.

We report the case of a woman with posttraumatic stress disorder secondary to childhood sexual assault who attempted withdrawal from long-term use of antidepressant medication and experimented with a plethora of different therapies. The complex case history illustrates the potential difficulty of withdrawal from chronic antidepressant medication and the role of integrative therapies for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common gastrointestinal emergency of premature infants and is characterized by an extensive hemorrhagic inflammatory necrosis of the distal ileum and proximal colon. We have previously shown that, during the development of experimental NEC, the liver plays an important role in regulating inflammation in the ileum, and accumulation of ileal bile acids (BA) along with dysregulation of ileal BA transporters contributes to ileal damage. Given these findings, we speculated that hepatic BA transporters would also be altered in experimental NEC.

Using concept mapping to build clinical judgment skills.

This article is a description of educational innovation that utilizes concept mapping as a teaching strategy in the development of critical thinking skills of undergraduate nursing students. A concept mapping rubric was designed using Tanner's Clinical Judgment Model to guide students (n = 8) in the construction of clinical cases for the development of appropriate clinical judgment skills. Each student evaluated the concept mapping exercise and provided feedback regarding the rubric, their understanding of the clinical situation, and the development of clinical judgment skills.

By providing AAP together with the capsid protein VP3, capsids are formed that are composed of VP3 only. Gold(I) and silver(I) complexes of 1-methyl-5-thio-tetrazole (1) have been prepared and the coordination chemistry of this ligand toward metal-phosphine frameworks has been explored. As indicated by IR and Raman data, ligand 1 is deprotonated and the resulted anion acts as a bidentate (S,N)-tetrazole-5-thiolato unit in the new gold(I) complexes, [Au(SCN(4)Me)(PPh(3))] (2), [{Au(SCN(4)Me)}(2)(μ-dppm)] (3), and [{Au(SCN(4)Me)}(2)(μ-dppe)] (4), while it is coordinated only through the sulfur atom as its neutral tetrazole-5-thione form in the silver(I) derivative, [Ag(HSCN(4)Me)(PPh(3))](2)(OTf)(2) (5). Further characterization of the new compounds was performed using multinuclear ((1)H, (13)C, (31)P, (19)F) NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and DSC measurements.

While the sPLA2 domain of Minute Virus of Mice has recently been shown to mediate endosomal escape by lipolytic pore formation, experimental evidence for a similar function in AAV infection is still lacking. Here, we explored the function of the sPLA2 domain of AAV by making use of the serotype 2 mutant (76)HD/AN.

Assessing the prospects of genome-wide association studies performed in inbred mice.

The remarkable success in mapping genes linked to a number of disease traits using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in human cohorts has renewed interest in applying this same technique in model organisms such as inbred laboratory mice. Unlike humans, however, the limited genetic diversity in the ancestry of laboratory mice combined with selection pressure over the past decades have yielded an intricate population genetic structure that can complicate the results obtained from association studies. This problem is further exacerbated by the small number of strains typically used in such studies where multiple spurious associations arise as a result of random chance.

Engineering adeno-associated virus serotype 2-based targeting vectors using a new insertion site-position 453-and single point mutations.

Background: Genetic modification of capsid proteins by peptide insertion has created the possibility of using adeno-associated viral (AAV) vectors for receptor specific gene transfer (AAV targeting). The most common site used for insertion in AAV serotype 2 capsids are amino acid positions 587 and 588 located at the second highest capsid protrusion. Reasoning that peptide insertions at the most exposed position augments target receptor interaction, we explored position 453 as a new insertion site.

Template synthesis of arrays of nano fuel cells.

A method for the construction of an array of fuel cells wherein each cell is 200 nm in diameter is presented. Electrodeposition of Pt-Cu nanowires inside the cylindrical pores of an Anodisc filter membrane and the subsequent dealloying of the Cu by soaking the filter in fuming nitric acid for several hours are used to construct an array of porous platinum electrodes. About 10(9) electrically isolated cylindrical porous electrodes, each 200 nm in diameter, are formed in this manner.

Combinatorial engineering of a gene therapy vector: directed evolution of adeno-associated virus.

Background: Viruses are being exploited as vectors to deliver therapeutic genetic information into target cells. The success of this approach will depend on the ability to overcome current limitations, especially in terms of safety and efficiency, through molecular engineering of the viral particles.

Methods: Here we show that in vitro directed evolution can be successfully performed to randomize the viral capsid by error prone PCR and to obtain mutants with improved phenotype.

Preventing HIV Infection Among Juvenile Delinquents: Educational Diagnosis Using the Health Belief Model.

The purpose of this study was to use an enhanced version of the Health Belief Model as a conceptual framework to describe health beliefs and safer sex intentions for HIV prevention educational needs of juvenile delinquents between the ages of thirteen to eighteen years incarcerated in state supported training schools in Ohio. An accessible sample (n = 452) of juvenile delinquents from four of nine institutions was the study population. Juvenile delinquents in this study were at high risk for HIV infection.
