Objective: A gluten-free diet (GFD) is becoming increasingly popular, especially among young females, and including those without diagnosed celiac disease (CD). Whether a GFD is appropriate during pregnancy remains unclear. Our primary aim was to evaluate the association of a GFD and neonatal birthweight and incidence of large for gestational age (LGA) and small for gestational age (SGA).

Introduction: COVID-19 and new guidelines during the pandemic affected the gynecologic cancer treatment pathways, resulting in recorded delays and modifications in the treatment protocols. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in one of the major gynecologic cancer care centers in Finland, Tampere University Hospital.
Material And Methods: Our retrospective register study included 909 patients that were new gynecologic cancer cases (uterine, cervical, vulvar, vaginal, or ovarian) referred to the Tampere University Hospital Gynecologic Oncology Outpatient Clinic between March 17th, 2018, and March 15th, 2022.
Background: Vitamin D supplementation may lower the risk of acute respiratory infection (ARI), and the effects may be mediated through the induction of cathelicidin production.
Objective: To study the effect of vitamin D supplementation on ARI and cathelicidin concentration in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) and to study the associations between baseline serum 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and ARIs and cathelicidin concentrations in a 14-week follow-up study.
Methods: In the RCT study, the participants were randomized into 2 groups to receive either 20 µg of vitamin D or an identical placebo daily.
We conducted a prospective study of 159 cases of subspecies (SDSE) bacteremia in 157 patients at 2 hospitals in Finland during November 2015–November 2019. Cellulitis was associated with nonsevere disease (p = 0.008); necrotizing fasciitis was associated with severe disease (p = 0.

Inactivity, obesity, high BP and elevated lipid and glucose levels as well as tobacco use all increase cardiometabolic risk. The present study was thus aimed at investigating the health and physical activity of employees in a military environment, concentrating on comparisons between soldiers and civilians.

To investigate recent changes in the incidence and characteristics of tumours, a retrospective 15-year patient cohort study was performed in Finland. Histopathological diagnoses of cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas diagnosed between 2016 and 2020 were obtained from the pathology database and clinical data from patient medical records and combined with previously collected data for the years 2006-2015.

The most important regulator of angiogenesis is the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family, which is involved in multiple pathways in tumor microenvironment. The objective of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of the VEGF family in patients treated for metastatic breast cancer.

Costs of disability and resulting need for more supported living arrangements are high after a hip fracture. The aim was to examine pre-fracture urinary incontinence (UI) and double incontinence (DI, concurrent UI and fecal incontinence) as predictors of changes in mobility and living arrangements in older female hip fracture patients in a 1-year follow-up.

To apply these techniques in everyday clinical practice, we planned this phase II trial with different fractionation schedules and followed up patients using careful health-related quality of life (QoL) questionnaires for three years.
Patients And Methods: Seventy-three PC patients with one or two intermediate PC risk factors according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network criteria were recruited.
Background: To study the effect of hip fracture type on physical performance, functional ability and change in mobility four to six months after the injury.
Methods: A total of 1331 patients out of consecutive 2052 patients aged ≥ 65 years who underwent hip fracture surgery were included in the study. Patient information was collected on admission, during hospitalization, by phone interview and at the geriatric outpatient clinic 4 to 6 months after the fracture.

Aims: Socioeconomic problems may present significant challenges when trying to reach optimal glycaemic control in paediatric patients with type 1 diabetes. We examined sociodemographic factors affecting metabolic control in patients in one of the biggest paediatric diabetes clinics in Finland.
Methods: One hundred ninety-one children (age 2-15 years; median 11 years; 47% female) with type 1 diabetes and their families were recruited during outpatient visits in the paediatric diabetes clinic of Tampere University Hospital, Finland.
Background: The knowledge on vertical human papillomavirus (HPV) transmission is limited. We aimed to determine whether HPV transmission from parents to their offspring occurs before or during birth.
Methods: Altogether, 321 mothers, 134 fathers, and their 321 newborn offspring from the Finnish Family HPV study cohort were included.
Objectives: According to the CONCORD-3 study, the 5-year survival rate of lung cancer patients in Finland has not improved during the twenty-first century. In the present study, we evaluated the survival trends of lung cancer patients diagnosed and treated in one of the five university hospitals in Finland to determine possible explanatory factors behind the lack of improved survival.
Material And Methods: This retrospective population-based study included all lung cancer patients diagnosed in Tampere University Hospital in 2007-2019 ( = 3041).
Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis (SDSE) is a human pathogen causing severe invasive infections. Population-based studies on SDSE bacteremia are limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence, seasonal pattern, clinical manifestations, and recurrence of SDSE bacteraemia.

Design: A prospective cohort study SETTING AND SUBJECTS: 1,468 female patients aged ≥ 65 treated for their first hip fracture during the period 2007-2019 METHODS: Continence status was elicited at baseline and one-year post-fracture. Age- and multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards and multinomial logistic regression models were used to determine the associations of incontinence with one-year mortality and to examine the associations of baseline predictors with incident UI and DI respectively.

Background: The benefits of reduction mammoplasty procedures have been reported previously. However, to control the rise in public healthcare costs, we need to find ways of conducting these procedures safely and more cost-effectively. Our aim was to examine whether reduction mammaplasty performed in an outpatient setting has comparable surgical complication rates to those performed in an inpatient setting.

High fiber and liquid intake have beneficial effects on these symptoms in non- pregnant population. Our aim was to evaluate the association of dietary fiber, fluid intake and lifestyle characteristics with constipation, heartburn, and pregnancy outcome.

Understanding the complication profile and risk factors in different reduction methods can help in choosing a technique, which serves the patient best. The authors present their experience of three different reduction techniques [superomedial pedicle (SMP), superior pedicle (SP) and inferior pedicle (IP)] with an emphasis on predictors of complications.

We examined HRQoL of patients with an early prostate cancer (PC) not receiving hormonal treatment up to 3 years after RT using the 15D instrument and the FACT-P questionnaire.
Methods: The 15D results were compared to those in the age-standardized general male population (N = 952) using an independent-sample t test.
Introduction: Treatment with 2-weekly docetaxel 50 mg/m was shown to improve overall survival and was better tolerated than the standard 75 mg/m 3-weekly regimen in men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) in the original randomised PROSTY trial. The aim of this study was to investigate, whether quality of life (QoL) effects would differ between the 2-weekly docetaxel 50 mg/m regimen from the standard 3-weekly 75 mg/m treatment.
Materials And Methods: QoL data were collected with the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Prostate (FACT-P) and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy Advanced Prostate Symptom Index - 8 Item version (FAPSI-8).
