Identifying representative sequences for groups of functionally similar proteins and enzymes poses significant computational challenges. In this study, we applied submodular optimization, a method effective in data summarization, to select representative sequences for thioesterase enzyme families. We introduced and validated two algorithms, Greedy and Bidirectional Greedy, using curated protein sequence data from the ThYme (Thioester-active enzYmes) database.

Electrolytic glucose oxidation has garnered great interest in energy-saving hydrogen generation. However, high charge-transfer resistance and inefficient active centers have been recognized as the primary issues for poor electrochemical performance. In this study, for the first time, we offer a novel defect-rich CeO /β-Ni(OH) composite nanosheet-decorated Ni foam electrocatalyst (denoted as Ce@NF-GA), synthesized a unique hydrothermal approach under the co-participation of glycerol and acetic acid.

Unlabelled: Many bacteria metabolize ethanolamine as a nutrient source through cytoplasmic organelles named bacterial microcompartments (BMCs). Here we investigated the molecular assembly, regulation, and function of BMCs in a Gram-negative oral pathobiont that is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. The genome harbors a conserved ethanolamine utilization () locus with 21 genes that encode several putative BMC shell proteins and a two-component signal transduction system (TCS), in addition to the enzymes for ethanolamine transport and catabolism.

Article Synopsis
  • - This phase 3 trial assessed the self-amplifying mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, ARCT-154, against the ChAdOx1-S adenovirus-vector vaccine in Vietnam, involving nearly 2,400 adult participants.
  • - Both vaccines had similar safety profiles, with mainly mild-to-moderate side effects and few serious adverse events reported.
  • - ARCT-154 showed higher neutralizing antibody responses and efficacy against COVID-19 compared to ChAdOx1-S, suggesting potential immunological advantages without compromising safety.

  • Xuan Lien Nature Reserve in Vietnam, established in 1999, aims to protect wildlife and habitats but faces serious human disturbances, prompting a need for updated species data.
  • In 2023, a systematic camera trapping survey was conducted across 21,000 hectares, documenting at least 46 species from 39 genera, with a focus on mid- to large-sized terrestrial vertebrates.
  • The study highlights Xuan Lien as vital for small carnivores, yet revealed concerning results regarding overhunting threats, particularly affecting species like ungulates.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how filtering organic-rich waters in the Boreal Zone affects the concentrations and size distribution of dissolved trace elements (TEs), particularly focusing on ionic and colloid-associated TEs.
  • Results show that membrane filtration significantly reduces concentrations of inorganic colloid-associated TEs in river waters, excluding 20-80% of ionic TEs and 100% of larger colloid-associated TEs under clogged conditions.
  • In contrast, cartridge filtration is more efficient at allowing ions to pass through while excluding colloids, leading to varying concentrations of bioavailable TEs despite similar nominal pore sizes.

Animals have evolved innate responses to cues including social, food, and predator odors. In the natural environment, animals are faced with choices that involve balancing risk and reward where innate significance may be at odds with internal need. The ability to update the value of a cue through learning is essential for navigating changing and uncertain environments.

The analysis of colloid-associated trace elements (TEs) in acidic, organic-rich waters (pH 3.8-5.8) using AF4-UV-ICPMS often necessitates the use of neutral or weakly alkaline carriers (pH 7-8.

Background: Human placental allografts are widely used to promote wound healing. Placental (or amniotic membrane/umbilical cord) allografts are placed along the neurovascular bundles during radical prostatectomy to improve continence and erectile function recovery. It is unknown whether placental allografts impact biochemical recurrence (BCR).

  • Thai fighting cock breeds in Thailand, such as Lueng Hang Khao and Pradu Hang Dam, have cultural significance and unique characteristics for fighting and consumption, but their genetic diversity is not well understood.
  • The study aimed to analyze the genetic variation and differentiation among these breeds using genotyping to understand the effects of human selection on their genetic structure.
  • Results indicated that artificial selection and genetic drift led to subpopulations within fighting cocks, highlighting the impact of breeding practices on genetic diversity and the need for effective management strategies.

Background: The field of immunology has undoubtedly benefited from the use of cell lines for immunological studies; however, due to the "immortal" nature of many cell lines, they are not always the best model. Thus, direct collection and culture of primary cells from model organisms is a solution that many researchers utilize. To the best of our knowledge, there is not a singular protocol which encompasses the entire process of bone marrow cell collection through cryopreservation and resuscitation of cells from a murine model.

Objective: The remarkable adaptability to the environment, high growth rate, meat with good taste and aroma, and ornamental appearance of the Pradu Hang Dam (PDH) and Samae Dam (SD) chickens make them valuable for improvement of poultry production to enhance food security. However, despite their close phenotypic similarity, distinct classification of PDH and SD chickens remains controversial. Thus, this study aimed to clarify genetic origins and variation between PDH and SD chickens, genetic diversity and structures of PDH and SD chickens.

Introduction: There remains an increasing utilization of internet-based resources as a first line of medical knowledge. Among patients with cardiovascular disease, these resources often are relied upon for numerous diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. However, the reliability of this information is not fully understood.

Background: Wearable devices have been used extensively both inside and outside of the hospital setting. During the COVID-19 pandemic, in some contexts, there was an increased need to remotely monitor pulse and saturated oxygen for patients due to the lack of staff and bedside monitors.

Objective: A prototype of a remote monitoring system using wearable pulse oximeter devices was implemented at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from August to December 2021.

During difficult tasks, conflict can benefit performance on a subsequent trial. One theory for such performance adjustments is that people monitor for conflict and reactively engage cognitive control. This hypothesis has been challenged because tasks that control for associative learning do not show such "cognitive control" effects.

Chronic knee pain is one of the most common complaints in primary care offices. Osteopathic family physicians Leonid Tafler and Samira Ovshaev have worked tirelessly for over 10 years to develop a revolutionary and unique technique for treating chronic knee pain. This technique is easy to learn and can be performed at any outpatient practice.

Background: Medication related clinical decision support (CDS) interventions may improve patient safety. In older patient populations, there has been effort placed in reducing exposure to potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). After years of reducing exposure of older adults in our hospitals to PIMs through multi-component interventions, our system chose to expand the scope and attempt a new strategy to lessen alert burden for providers and pharmacists.

Vertebral artery dissection (VAD) is a cause of brain stem stroke in the younger population and is commonly associated with trauma, sudden neck movement, or chiropractic manipulations. In this case, a 28-year-old male with a non-significant past medical history who recently started a CrossFit boot camp presented to the emergency department with right-sided neck pain, dysarthria, mild right gaze paresis, right dysmetria, and right facial droop with symptoms of Horner's syndrome. Imaging results revealed an age-indeterminate left lateral cerebellar infarct with right VAD.

Antibiotics are frequently prescribed for children in the outpatient setting. Although sometimes necessary, antibiotic use is associated with important downstream effects including the development of antimicrobial resistance among human and environmental microorganisms. Current outpatient stewardship efforts focus on guiding appropriate antibiotic prescribing practices among providers, but little is known about parents' understanding of antibiotics and appropriate disposal of leftover antibiotics.
