FRUIT FOR THOUGHT: Low-temperature microwave hydrothermal processing of orange peel not only enables the separation of the major components but also adds further value through the production of other high-value products: pectin and D-limonene, together with a rare form of mesoporous cellulose, are produced in a single step, without added acid. A process temperature change enables the conversion of D-limonene to α-terpineol.

A wide range of different clinical manifestations have been described in the literature, especially in immunosuppressed patients. CMV-induced thrombosis has also been reported in these patients, and various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the role of CMV in the thrombotic process, including direct damage of the endothelial cells, activation of coagulation factors and inducing the production of antiphospholipid antibodies.

We investigated obestatin effects in vitro, on adipocyte function, and in vivo, on insulin resistance and inflammation in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Obestatin effects on apoptosis, differentiation, lipolysis, and glucose uptake were determined in vitro in mouse 3T3-L1 and in human subcutaneous (hSC) and omental (hOM) adipocytes.

Somatostatin (SST) and its analogues inhibit normal and cancer cell growth and motility through the SST receptors, sst1-5. Cortistatin (CST), which displays high structural and functional homology with SST, binds all ssts, as well as MrgX2.

Whether the gland is capable of cell regeneration after injury, in particular when suffered at adult age, is unknown. To investigate the adult pituitary's regenerative capacity and the response of its stem/progenitor cell compartment to damage, we constructed a transgenic mouse model to conditionally destroy pituitary cells.

Objective: The aim of this study was to perform a retrospective study by genotyping 154 isolates from human listeriosis cases occurred in the region of Andalusia (southern Spain) in the period 2005-2009.
Material And Methods: Serotyping was performed for 1 and 4 somatic antigens using commercial Listeria antisera, and by multiplex-PCR serogrouping according to the method described by Doumith et al. (2004).
In the current climate of several interrelated impending global crises, namely, climate change, chemicals, energy, and oil, the impact of green chemistry with respect to chemicals and biofuels generated from within a holistic concept of a biorefinery is discussed. Green chemistry provides unique opportunities for innovation via product substitution, new feedstock generation, catalysis in aqueous media, utilization of microwaves, and scope for alternative or natural solvents. The potential of utilizing waste as a new resource and the development of integrated facilities producing multiple products from biomass is discussed under the guise of biorefineries.

Cells of strain RS-16(T) were Gram-negative rods, oxidase-negative and motile by peritrichous flagella. Strain RS-16(T) required NaCl for growth, and grew between 1% and 30% (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 5-7.

We made 8 samplings at different places in this habitat during the years 2006 and 2007 and isolated a total of 49 strains, which were identified by means of phenotypic tests and the hypervariable V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene sequences (around 500 bp). The ribosomal data showed that the isolates belonged to 12 genera within the Halobacteriaceae family, with Haloferax and Natrinema being the most abundant.

Background: The transcription factor SOX2, which is involved in the induction of pluripotent stem cells and contributes to colorectal carcinogenesis, is associated with a poor prognosis in colon cancer (CC). Furthermore, SOX2 is a repressor of the transcriptional activity of β-catenin in vitro. Since the majority of CC develop via an activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway, indicated by nuclear expression of β-catenin, we wanted to investigate the expression patterns of SOX2 and β-catenin and correlate them with the occurrence of lymph node and distant metastases as indicators of malignant progression.

However, previous results from nonprimate species indicate that these peptides can also directly stimulate GH secretion, at low concentrations. The relevance of this phenomenon in a nonhuman primate model was investigated in the present study by testing the impact of somatostatin/cortistatin on GH release in primary pituitary cell cultures from baboons.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFSecretion of GH by pituitary somatotrophs is primarily stimulated by GHRH and ghrelin and inhibited by somatostatin through the activation of specific receptors [GHRH receptor (GHRH-R), GH secretagogue receptor (GHS-R) and somatostatin receptors (sst1-5), respectively]. However, we have shown that somatostatin, at low doses, can also stimulate GH release, directly and specifically, in primary pituitary cultures from a nonhuman primate (baboons, Papio anubis) and pigs. To determine whether somatostatin, GHRH, and ghrelin can also regulate the expression of their receptors in primates, pituitary cultures from baboons were treated for 4 h with GHRH or ghrelin (10(-8) m) or with high (10(-7) m) and low (10(-15) m) doses of somatostatin, and GH release and expression levels of all receptors were measured.

As a result, an outstanding increase in the surface area and pore volume is observed, together with changes in the mesopore ordering. Hydrated aluminium species influence the chemical environment of the micelles during synthesis, which seems to induce the accumulation of stacking faults in the mesopore framework, and give rise to closer structural packing.

Ghrelin is a multifunctional hormone produced in a wide variety of tissues, which has been associated with the progression of obesity and metabolic syndrome, but has been also linked to neuromodulation, neuroprotection and memory and learning processes. In addition, ghrelin system also acts in an autocrine/paracrine fashion where the majority of its components [ghrelin variants (native ghrelin, In1-ghrelin), acylation enzyme (GOAT) and receptors (GHS-Rs)] are expressed in the different regions of central nervous system.
