This review focuses on our current understanding of how growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH): 1) stimulates GH release and synthesis from pituitary growth hormone (GH)-producing cells (somatotropes), 2) drives somatotrope proliferation, 3) is negatively regulated by somatostatin (SST), GH and IGF1, 4) is altered throughout lifespan and in response to metabolic challenges, and 5) analogues can be used clinically to treat conditions of GH excess or deficiency. Although a large body of early work provides an underpinning for our current understanding of GHRH, this review specifically highlights more recent work that was made possible by state-of-the-art analytical tools, receptor-specific agonists and antagonists, high-resolution in vivo and ex vivo imaging and the development of tissue (cell) -specific ablation mouse models, to paint a more detailed picture of the regulation and actions of GHRH.

Alternative splicing is a post-transcriptional process resulting in multiple protein isoforms from a single gene. Abnormal splicing may lead to metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). To identify the splicing factor expression that predicts T2DM remission in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients, we identified newly diagnosed T2DM at baseline ( = 190) from the CORDIOPREV study.

Pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) is the most accurate procedure for lymph node (LN) staging in prostate cancer (PCa) patients. LN sectioning and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining of at least one slice remains the gold standard for LN evaluation, potentially leading to misdetection of small metastatic focus. Entire LN analysis is possible with One-Step Nucleic Acid Amplification (OSNA) by detecting cytokeratin 19 (CK19) mRNA as a surrogate for LN invasion.

Article Synopsis
  • Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) is traditionally viewed as a key hormone regulating growth and metabolism through the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, but it's also produced in various peripheral tissues, impacting multiple bodily functions.
  • The presence of GHRH and its receptor (GHRH-R) in the reproductive systems of both males and females suggests important roles in gonadal function and reproductive health.
  • This review will examine the GHRH/GHRH-R axis's significance in reproductive physiology and discuss how understanding this axis could lead to new treatments for reproductive disorders like infertility, endometriosis, and cancers linked to the reproductive system.

Introduction: Stiffness is increased in vertebrae after kyphoplasty with bone cement is performed, which cause an increase in subsequent fractures in adjacent levels. This has led to increased interest in alternative filling materials such as bioactive calcium phosphate ceramics or silicon-based polymers. This study's objective is to compare the results between kyphoplasty with bone cement and with the VK100 silicone.

Pituitary tumors, including prolactinomas, present significant clinical challenges that require a deeper understanding of their molecular roots for improved diagnostics and therapies. Here, we investigate the role of the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN)/phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway in pituitary tumorigenesis using a mouse model. Conditional knockout of Pten in all pituitary cell lineages resulted in prolactinoma formation exclusively in female mice, demonstrating the critical role of PTEN in pituitary homeostasis.

Background: Increasing evidence supports the role of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in atherosclerosis in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients, suggesting that therapeutic strategies targeting AGEs may offer potential benefits in this population. The Mediterranean diet is associated with improved biomarkers and anthropometric measurements related with atherosclerosis in addition to its ability to modulate AGE metabolism. Our aim was to determine whether the reduction in atherosclerosis progression (measured by changes in intima-media thickness of both common carotid arteries (IMT-CC)), observed after consumption of a Mediterranean diet compared to a low-fat diet, is associated with a modulation of circulating AGE levels in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD).

Purpose: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is more prevalent in men than women, but the mechanisms responsible for this are not fully understood. We aimed to evaluate differences in trimethylamine (TMA), a microbial metabolite and its oxidized form, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), which is thought to promote atherosclerosis, between men and women with coronary heart disease (CHD), using as a reference a non-CVD population.

Materials And Methods: This study was carried out within the framework of the CORDIOPREV study (NCT00924937; June 19, 2009), a clinical trial which included 827 men and 175 women with CHD, with a non-CVD population of 375 individuals (270 men and 105 women) as a reference group.

Referring to selected examples of reproducible green syntheses using hybrid sol-gel catalysts of the SiliaCat series from different doctoral theses and research works published between 2015 and early 2024, this study briefly illustrates how said catalysts have been applied in a number of green synthetic methods of significant industrial relevance. This shows evidence that the nanochemistry "bottom-up" sol-gel approach based on catalytic species entrapped in organically modified silicas as effective and versatile heterogeneous catalysts developed between the late 1990s and 2010 has succeeded. Subsequent developments will show how the use of said materials in automated syntheses, supplying data to machine learning algorithms actually leads to faster and cheaper optimization of the reaction conditions.
