Article Synopsis
  • - The research aimed to create a deep learning model for accurately assessing the extent of resection (EOR) in glioblastoma patients using postoperative MRI scans, addressing limitations of existing algorithms that only focus on preoperative images.
  • - Utilizing data from multiple sources, the model was trained to segment tumor features like contrast-enhancing tumor, edema, and surgical cavity, and was compared with other segmentation models, showing high performance in classifying resection categories.
  • - The study found that the nnU-Net framework outperformed other algorithms, achieving high accuracy in both segmentation (with median Dice scores up to 0.81) and EOR classification (96% accuracy in comparisons), making it a valuable tool for clinical use.

The extended period of coexistence between Neanderthals and Homo sapiens in Europe coincided with the emergence of regionally distinctive lithic industries, signalling the onset of the Upper Palaeolithic. The Iberian Peninsula was on the periphery of pioneering Upper Palaeolithic developments, with archaeological remains primarily found in northern territories. We report the discovery of an initial Upper Palaeolithic lithic industry at Cueva Millán in the hinterlands of Iberia.

Article Synopsis
  • The Iberian Peninsula played a crucial role in understanding human settlement in Eurasia, particularly during the transition from Neandertals to anatomically modern humans.
  • There was a notable lack of human presence in central Iberia for about 16,000 years following the Neandertals' disappearance until evidence of human occupation re-emerges around 36,200 years ago.
  • The findings indicate that despite a shift towards colder and dryer conditions, anatomically modern humans successfully adapted their subsistence strategies and settled in areas previously thought to be uninhabitable, challenging existing views on early population dynamics in southwestern Europe.

Standard treatment of patients with glioblastoma includes surgical resection of the tumor. The extent of resection (EOR) achieved during surgery significantly impacts prognosis and is used to stratify patients in clinical trials. In this study, we developed a U-Net-based deep-learning model to segment contrast-enhancing tumor on post-operative MRI exams taken within 72 h of resection surgery and used these segmentations to classify the EOR as either maximal or submaximal.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy is a promising immunotherapy for treating cancers. This method consists in modifying the patients' T-cells to directly target antigen-presenting cancer cells. One of the barriers to the development of this type of therapies, is target antigen heterogeneity.

The settlement of cold and arid environments by Pleistocene hunter-gatherers has been a heated topic in Paleolithic Archaeology and the Quaternary Sciences for years. In the Iberian Peninsula, a key area for studying human adaptations to such environments is composed by the large interior and upland regions of the northern and southern plateaus (Mesetas) and bordering areas. As, traditionally, these regions have been relatively under-investigated compared to the ecologically more favored coastal areas of the peninsula, our knowledge of the human settlement of the whole Iberian hinterland remains scarce for the Last Glacial.

We present a multiagent-based model that captures the interactions between different types of cells with their microenvironment, and enables the analysis of the emergent global behavior during tissue regeneration and tumor development. Using this model, we are able to reproduce the temporal dynamics of regular healthy cells and cancer cells, as well as the evolution of their three-dimensional spatial distributions. By tuning the system with the characteristics of the individual patients, our model reproduces a variety of spatial patterns of tissue regeneration and tumor growth, resembling those found in clinical imaging or biopsies.

As the south-westernmost region of Europe, the Iberian Peninsula stands as a key area for understanding the process of modern human dispersal into Eurasia. However, the precise timing, ecological setting and cultural context of this process remains controversial concerning its spatiotemporal distribution within the different regions of the peninsula. While traditional models assumed that the whole Iberian hinterland was avoided by modern humans due to ecological factors until the retreat of the Last Glacial Maximum, recent research has demonstrated that hunter-gatherers entered the Iberian interior at least during Solutrean times.

We study the wetting critical behavior of the three-state (s=±1,0) Blume-Emery-Griffiths model using numerical simulations. This model provides a suitable scenario for the study of the role of vacancies on the wetting behavior of a thin magnetic film. To this aim we study a system confined between parallel walls with competitive short-range surface magnetic fields (h_{L}=-|h_{1}|).

Background: Neuroendocrine tumors, although relatively rare in incidence, are now the second most prevalent gastrointestinal neoplasm owing to indolent disease biology. A small but significant sub-group of neuroendocrine tumor patients suffer from diarrhea. This is usually secondary to carcinoid syndrome but can also be a result of short gut syndrome, bile acid excess or iatrogenic etiologies.

Background: A historical turning point occurred in the treatment of diarrhea when it was discovered that glucose could enhance intestinal sodium and water absorption. Adding glucose to salt water (oral rehydration solution, ORS) more efficiently replaced intestinal water and salt losses.

Aim: Provide a novel hypothesis to explain why mainstream use of ORS has been strongly recommended, but weakly adopted.

High-dose chemotherapy frequently causes injury to the gastrointestinal mucosa, resulting in diarrhea. The purpose of the current study was to assess the tolerability and efficacy of enterade® in reducing ≥ grade 2 diarrhea (G2D) in association with high-dose melphalan followed by autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT). We conducted a prospective, double blinded, multi-center trial in which 114 subjects were randomized to receive enterade® or placebo twice daily during the transplant hospitalization.

Background: Minimally invasive spine surgeries (MISS) are currently used for a wide variety of intradural spinal pathologies. Although MISS techniques have brought great benefits, primary dural closure can prove a challenge due to the narrow corridor of the tubular retractor systems.

Objective: To present the surgical technique we developed for dural closure using an extracorporeal knot that is simple and reproducible.

Introduction: Treatment with biological therapies increases the incidence of tuberculous disease. The introduction of systematic screening for latent tuberculosis infection in patients who are to receive these therapies has reduced this risk. In 2016, the consensus document on the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis in patients who are candidates for biological treatment was published in Spain.

Background: One of the main obstacles in lignocellulosic ethanol production is the necessity of pretreatment and fractionation of the biomass feedstocks to produce sufficiently pure fermentable carbohydrates. In addition, the by-products (hemicellulose and lignin fraction) are of low value, when compared to dried distillers grains (DDG), the main by-product of corn ethanol. Fast pyrolysis is an alternative thermal conversion technology for processing biomass.

Introduction: Prepubertal gynecomastia is a rare condition characterized by the growth of breast tissue in males as a consequence of early exposure to sexual hormones. When this condition is present, pathological sources of testosterone/estrogen production, such as adrenal or gonadal tumors must be searched for. A few reports have described an association between gynecomastia and substances that produce stimulation of the estrogen receptor, such as lavender and tea tree oil.
