The most effective regimen for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who do not achieve complete remission (CR) after one course of cytarabine and an anthracycline has not been extensively studied. We evaluated retrospectively the efficacy, toxicity, and prognostic factors for the achievement of CR following mitoxantrone and etoposide in 74 patients with newly diagnosed AML who did not respond to one course of therapy with cytarabine and idarubicin. CR was achieved in 39% of patients; 14% died of infectious complications; no grade 3 or 4 hepatic toxicities were observed.

In an effort to study the mechanism of regulation, microarrays were used to compare the transcription profiles of the wild-type strain with an rbf mutant and an rbf overexpression strain of the clinical isolate UAMS-1. Among the genes affected by rbf overexpression are those of the intercellular adhesion (ica) locus; however, expression of these genes was not affected by an rbf deletion in the chromosome.

A study was designed to determine FZT prevalence and species diversity, and risk factors for infection, in dogs, cats and pigs. Faecal samples from 186 dogs, 94 cats and 168 pigs belonging to 132 households in Nghia Hung district, Nam Dinh province, were examined for small trematode eggs; those were trematode eggs with length less than 50 microm.

There are a large number of angiogenic mediators including the angiopoietin (Ang) family and vascular endothelial growth factor, which play an important role in both physiological and pathological angiogenesis. This study examines serum levels of Ang-1 and Ang-2 in patients with neuroendocrine tumour (NET) compared healthy controls.

As neurons mature, they become less vulnerable to alcohol-induced death because they acquire a protective signaling pathway, mediated by nitric oxide (NO).

In this case report, an overall low frequency cancer presents masquerading with common cardiac symptomology. This case illustrates the importance for detailed diagnostic cardiac evaluations and heightened suspicion by physicians to consider metastatic disease to the heart in cancer patients with cardiovascular complications.

Methods: A 9-year retrospective study involving all of the transplant centers in France was designed to determine the incidence, origin, characteristics, and outcome of graft-site candidiasis that occurred after kidney transplantation. Yeasts cultured from preservation or drainage solutions and graft specimens were recorded.
Purpose: Radioimmunotherapy has been approved for relapsed follicular lymphoma (FL), including rituximab-refractory FL. This study was designed to determine the CR rate with short-course chemoimmunotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone, and rituximab (CHOP-R) followed by 90-Y ibritumomab tiuxetan (RIT) with extended rituximab as first-line treatment.
Experimental Design: Between March 2004 and February 2007, 60 patients with stage II to IV symptomatic or bulky FL from a single institution supported by a large community network entered this phase II trial.
We previously identified Rbf as an activator for biofilm formation on polystyrene surfaces in Staphylococcus aureus strain 8325-4. However, strain 8325-4 contains genetic mutations that may affect biofilm formation. To extend the observation to other strains, we used strain Newman, a weak biofilm producer, and strain UAMS-1, an osteomyelitis clinical strain, in this study.

We compared influenza and pneumococcal vaccination rates among eligible Asian Americans and white Americans, and for Vietnamese Americans as a subgroup, and assessed factors associated with these vaccinations.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of data collected from three ethnic groups over 4 years by telephone survey.
We are interested in mapping terms from the biomedical literature to controlled terminologies. For clinical and related terms, we rely on the MetaMap program for mapping terms to the UMLS Metathesaurus, accepting term assignments that have a reasonable match score. In a sizable number of cases, terms are ambiguous, and MetaMap proposes several mapping candidates.

Staphylcoccus aureus produces a number of virulence factors controlled by several global regulatory genes including agr and sarA. MgrA is a recently identified global regulator, belonging to the SarA subfamily, which upregulates expression of several virulence factors including capsule and sortase.

L2G7, a single potent anti-human HGF neutralizing monoclonal antibody, showed profound inhibition of human HGF-induced phosphorylated mitogen-activated protein kinase induction, wound healing, and invasion in lung tumor cells in vitro. Transgenic mice that overexpress human HGF in the airways were used to study the therapeutic efficacy of L2G7 for lung cancer prevention.

Sixty cases (49 well-differentiated and 11 poorly differentiated) were investigated for methylation of adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) and E-cadherin promoters, the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at APC locus and beta-catenin and E-cadherin expression by immunohistochemistry.

Serum biomarker levels are increasingly being investigated for their ability to predict therapy response and aid in the development of individualized treatment regimens. Multianalyte profiles may offer greater predictive power for neoadjuvant treatment response than the individual biomarkers currently in use.

These patients can develop proliferative changes of gastric enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells and gastric carcinoids (ECL-cell tumors). ECL-cell changes have been extensively studied in sporadic ZES patients and can be precursor lesions of gastric carcinoids, but little is known about factors influencing their severity or development of carcinoids in MEN1/ZES patients.

CodY is a global regulatory protein that was first discovered in Bacillus subtilis, where it couples gene expression to changes in the pools of critical metabolites through its activation by GTP and branched-chain amino acids. Homologs of CodY can be found encoded in the genomes of nearly all low-G+C gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus. The introduction of a codY-null mutation into two S.

In both cases, the exocrine glandular component was restricted to the upper third of the neoplasms being consistently absent in areas of muscular wall invasion and, in case 2, in nodal metastases. These glands were in close anatomical contiguity with the glands of the overlying gastric mucosa or, in case 1, apparently derived from deep pouch-like invaginations of the mucosa.

In order to exploit the above promoter for identifying novel antistaphylococcal drugs, we have cloned the promoter containing region (P(g)) of groES-groEL operon of S. aureus Newman and found that the above promoter is induced by sublethal concentrations of many antibiotics including cell-wall active antibiotics.
