It is known that viruses can active the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt signaling pathway in host cells to support cell survival and viral replication; however, the role of PI3K/Akt signaling in the pathogenic mechanisms induced by Marek's disease virus (MDV) which causes a neoplastic Marek's disease in poultry, remains unknown. In this study, we showed that MDV activated the PI3K/Akt pathway in chicken embryo fibroblasts (CEFs) at the early phase of infection, whereas treatment with a PI3K inhibitor LY294002 prior to MDV infection decreased viral replication and DNA synthesis. Flow cytometry analysis showed that inhibition of the PI3K/Akt pathway could significantly increase apoptosis in MDV-infected host cells, indicating that activation of PI3K/Akt signaling could facilitate viral replication through support of cell survival during infection.

Increasing attention has been dedicated to trace phthalates in bottled water due to the serious concerns on public health, while there is still a lack of systematic analysis and assessment of current global situation. Through analyzing five representative phthalates in bottled water over 20 countries, this work clearly revealed the phthalates-associated potential risks in both human daily intake and estrogenic effect. In the risk assessment, the kinetic models were also developed to describe and predict phthalates migration.

Background: Increasing epidemiological studies have confirmed the association between maternal preeclampsia and elevated blood pressure in their offspring. Though case-control or cohort studies have demonstrated long-term outcomes for the offspring of preeclampsia, it is still a question that how these changes were caused by genetic reasons or by preeclampsia itself.

Objective: In our study, we explored the potential epigenetic regulation of delta-like homolog 1-maternally expressed gene 3 (DLK1-MEG3) region in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), and its connection with endothelium-derived factors.

The widespread introduction of semi-dwarf1 (sd1), also known as the 'Green Revolution' gene, has dramatically increased rice yield. However, the extensive use of limited sources of dwarf genes may cause 'bottleneck' effects in breeding new rice varieties. Alternative dwarf germplasms are quite urgent for rice breeding.

Zinc pthalocyanine (ZnPc) is a second-generation photodynamic therapy (PDT) sensitizer with sufficient PDT activity for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). ZnPc is hydrophobic and insoluble in water, which creates hurdles in systemic administration and hence restricts its use in clinic. Here we have loaded ZnPc on chitosan/methoxy polyethylene glycol-polylactic acid (CPP) nanoparticles to form Z-CPP to enhance PDT efficacy.

It was demonstrated that inflammation and oxidative stress induced by hyperglycemia were closely associated with alteration of miR-146a. Here, we investigated the role of miR-146a in mediating inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain of chronic T2DM rats. The chronic T2DM (cT2DM) models were induced by intraperitoneal administration of STZ (35 mg/kg) after being fed a high-fat, high-sugar diet for 6 weeks.

The photochromic dithionite complex Cp*Rh(μ-CH)(μ-OSSO) (Cp* = η-MeC) is of interest because it undergoes an unusual fully reversible unimolecular photochemical rearrangement to the isodithionite complex Cp*Rh(μ-CH)(μ-OSOSO). In order to obtain more insight into these systems, a comprehensive density functional theory study has been carried out on isomeric CpM(CH)(SO) (M = Rh, Ir) derivatives. The experimentally observed rhodium complexes with coupled sulfur dioxide (SO) units to give dithionite or isodithionite ligands are surprisingly high-energy kinetic isomers in our analysis, reflecting the need for dithionite rather than SO for their synthesis.
