Beam-steered infrared (IR) light communication has gained tremendous attention as one of the solutions of congested wireless communication traffic. High performance active beam-steering devices play a crucial role in data allocation and exchange. Conventional beam-steering devices such as spatial light modulator (SLM) and micro-electrical mechanical system (MEMS) mirror and the current emerging nonmechanical beam-steering metasurface-based devices are challenging to realize a large tunable steering angle beyond several degrees, which significantly hinders the spatial application of optical wireless communications (OWC).

High-capacity optical interconnects with short reach are hugely demanded driven by the exponential growth of data traffic. In this work, four-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) uplink/downlink twin single-sideband (twin-SSB) signals are implemented by a wavelength selective switch (WSS) at once, which simplifies the structure of multi-channel SSB transmitters and reduces the cost of high-capacity optical interconnect. Compared to a double sideband scheme, it has been experimentally proven that the performance of SSB transmission over standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) at C-band with an ultra-high baud rate has been greatly improved, which has the ability to effectively overcome the power fading induced by chromatic dispersion in an intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) system.

Food workers have frequent contact with unprocessed foods, but their carriage of Salmonella and potential influence on public health have not been comprehensively assessed. We investigated Salmonella carriage among food workers compared with non-food workers based on occupational health screening of 260,315 asymptomatic workers over an 8-year surveillance period in Yulin, China. We confirmed that healthy carriers serve as natural reservoirs for Salmonella, with higher carriage rates in food workers than non-food workers.

Forty-six young adult observers with normal color vision (plus five from an earlier study) made a series of color matches using a new LED-based, multi-wavelength visual trichromator. Thirteen LED lights of different wavelengths were combined to produce 11 triplets of lights that observers were asked to match to a white reference light of 7500 K over visual angles of either 2° or 10°. Matches were initially made by asking observers to adjust the intensities of the three lights making up each triplet.

One of the significant challenges in tone mapping is to preserve the perceptual quality of the tone-mapped images. Traditional tone mapping operators (TMOs) compress the luminance of high dynamic range (HDR) images with little to no consideration of image color information resulting into suboptimal colors. Existing color management algorithms require either manual parameter tuning or introducing lightness and hue shifts.

A noise reduction method based on the block-matching and 4D (BM4D) scheme is proposed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in distributed vibration sensing (DVS) systems. In the proposed scheme, the original Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signal is converted into a three-dimensional image containing Rayleigh trajectory and energy information. The correlation between the time-domain and spatial-domain signals is then used to achieve the denoising operation.

Background: Although goal-directed perfusion (GDP) during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has been discussed extensively in adult studies, no pediatric indexed oxygen delivery (Doi) thresholds are universally accepted, and no pediatric randomized controlled trial has been reported. This study aimed to determine whether the GDP initiative (maintaining Doi ≥360 mL/min/m during CPB) could reduce the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) after pediatric cardiac operation and improve clinical outcomes.

Methods: This single-center randomized controlled trial enrolled 312 pediatric patients, who were randomized to receive either the GDP strategy or a conventional perfusion strategy during CPB.
