This case-control study spanned from July 2022 to September 2023, focusing on the pre-Omicron COVID-19 mRNA vaccine effectiveness against the Omicron variant in children without prior SARS-CoV-2 exposure. We reported that pre-Omicron COVID-19 mRNA vaccines significantly reduced Omicron-induced hospitalizations in infection-naïve Taiwanese children. Our study also highlighted the socioeconomic factors influencing COVID-19 vulnerability among the children population.

We have shown in vivo and in vitro previously that psychosine causes dysfunction of autophagy and the ubiquitin-proteasome system underlying the pathogenesis of globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD), a devastating lysosomal storage disease complicated by global demyelination. Here, we investigated the therapeutic efficacy of the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin in twitcher mice, a murine model of infantile GLD, in biochemical, histochemical, and clinical aspects. Administration of rapamycin to twitcher mice inhibited mTOR signaling in the brains, and significantly reduced the accumulation of insoluble ubiquitinated protein and the formation of ubiquitin aggregates.

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a fatal B-cell lymphoma caused by Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) infection. Inducing KSHV lytic replication that causes the death of host cells is an attractive treatment approach for PE; however, combination therapy inhibiting viral production is frequently needed to improve its outcomes. Bacteremia and associated bacterial sepsis are potentially fatal and occur when the host response to microbial invasion is impaired or compromised. This motivated us to develop carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) from a mixture of mannose (Man) and positively charged amino acids [AAs; lysine, arginine (Arg), or histidine] through a one-step mild pyrolysis procedure, which effectively inhibited drug-resistant bacterial strains isolated from septic patients. The as-prepared CPDs showed broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, including multidrug-resistant bacteria, even in human plasma.

Herein, we report a mild pyrolysis approach to prepare carbon nanogels (CNGs) through polymerization and the partial carbonization of l-lysine hydrochloride at 270 °C as a potential broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that can inhibit biopolymer-producing bacteria and clinical drug-resistant isolates and tackle drug resistance issues. We report a one-pot facile synthesis of highly photoresponsive bovine serum albumin (BSA) templated bismuth-copper sulfide nanocomposites (BSA-BiZ/CuS NCs, where BiZ represents formed BiS and bismuth oxysulfides (BOS)). As-formed surface vacancies and BiZ/CuS heterojunctions impart superior catalytic, photodynamic and photothermal properties. Upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, the BSA-BiZ/CuS NCs exhibit broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, not only against standard multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains but also against clinically isolated MDR bacteria and their associated biofilms.

CAR-T cells therapy can give rise to most common and concerning two side effects - cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and neurotoxicity. But in our CD19 CAR-T cells therapy clinical trial, we observed 1 out of 17 patients with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) developed acute myelofibrosis(AMF) after grade IV CRS post to the CD19 CAR-T cells therapy. This finding suggests that the CAR-T cells therapy may have rare and serious AMF, which we should pay important attention to.
