Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease with neurodegenerative features causing risk for neurologic irreversible disability over time. Examination of normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) changes in MS by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS), may detect diffuse white matter pathology that is associated with neurodegeneration.

Methods: In this observational study of in total twenty-six patients with MS, starting treatment with dimethyl fumarate (DMF), we measured the absolute concentration of metabolites in periventricular NAWM using 1H-MRS at baseline and after one and three years of treatment.

Welding techniques and manganese concentrations in blood and brain: Results from the WELDFUMES study.

This study used whole-brain mapping to investigate the effect of different welding processes on manganese (Mn) accumulation in the brain. Exposure measurements were performed at the welders' workplaces about 3 weeks before a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination. The welders were categorized into three main groups based on welding method, and the T1-relaxation rate (R1) was measured using quantitative MRI (qMRI).

Knowledge about sex-specific difference in life-history traits-like growth, mortality, or behavior-is of key importance for management and conservation as these parameters are essential for predictive modeling of population sustainability. We applied a newly developed molecular sex identification method, in combination with a SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) panel for inferring the population of origin, for more than 300 large Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT) collected over several years from newly reclaimed feeding grounds in the Northeast Atlantic. The vast majority (95%) of individuals were genetically assigned to the eastern Atlantic population, which migrates between spawning grounds in the Mediterranean and feeding grounds in the Northeast Atlantic.

Signal regulatory protein alpha (SIRPα) is mainly expressed by cells of myeloid origin. This membrane glycoprotein is shown to be involved in regulation of different inflammatory conditions, such as colitis and arthritis. However, SIRPα has not been investigated in relationship to periodontitis, an inflammatory condition affecting the tooth supporting tissues.

Objectives: The use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is safe from a long-term perspective since there are no known cumulative risks for patients or personnel. However, the technique comes with several acute risks associated with the powerful electromagnetic fields that are necessary to produce medical images. These risks include, among other things, a projectile hazard, loud noise, and the risk of heating.

The PerioGene North Study Uncovers Serum Proteins Related to Periodontitis.

The sequalae of periodontitis include irreversible degradation of tooth-supporting structures and circulatory spread of inflammatory mediators. However, the serum protein profile in periodontitis is not well described, which is partly attributable to the limited number of studies based on large and well-characterized periodontitis cohorts. This study aims to identify novel, circulating inflammation-related proteins associated with periodontitis within the PerioGene North case-control study, which includes 478 cases with severe periodontitis and 509 periodontally healthy controls.

Liver fibrosis is associated with left ventricular remodeling: insight into the liver-heart axis.

Objective: In nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), liver fibrosis is the strongest predictor of adverse outcomes. We sought to investigate the relationship between liver fibrosis and cardiac remodeling in participants from the general population using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as explore potential mechanistic pathways by analyzing circulating cardiovascular biomarkers.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we prospectively included participants with type 2 diabetes and individually matched controls from the SCAPIS (Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study) cohort in Linköping, Sweden.

Background & Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common metabolic disorder, characterized by the accumulation of excess fat in the liver, and is a driving factor for various severe liver diseases. These multi-factorial and multi-timescale changes are observed in different clinical studies, but these studies have not been integrated into a unified framework. In this study, we aim to present such a unified framework in the form of a dynamic mathematical model.

Dealing with overconsumption and the waste crisis requires consumers to make a drastic lifestyle change, adopting more circular consumption patterns that support the prevention of waste generation. The goal of our study was to explore the range of precycling behaviors aimed at preventing waste generation in households. We tested the hypotheses of the Motivation Opportunity Ability framework using a nationally representative survey of consumers residing in Finland (n = 1,000).

The succession of ecological divergence and reproductive isolation in adaptive radiations.

Adaptive radiation is a major source of biodiversity but the way in which known components of ecological opportunity, ecological differentiation, and reproductive isolation underpin such biodiversity patterns remains elusive. Much is known about the evolution of ecological differentiation and reproductive isolation during single speciation events, but exactly how those processes scale up to complete adaptive radiations is less understood. Do we expect complete reproductive barriers between newly formed species before the ecological differentiation continues, or does proper species formation occur much later, long after the ecological diversification? Our goal is to improve our mechanistic understanding of adaptive radiations by analyzing an individual-based model that includes a suite of mechanisms that are known to contribute to biodiversity.

Altered probe pressure and body position increase diagnostic accuracy for men and women in detecting hepatic steatosis using quantitative ultrasound.

Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of ultrasound guided attenuation parameter (UGAP) for evaluating liver fat content with different probe forces and body positions, in relation to sex, and compared with proton density fat fraction (PDFF).

Methods: We prospectively enrolled a metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) cohort that underwent UGAP and PDFF in the autumn of 2022. Mean UGAP values were obtained in supine and 30° left decubitus body position with normal 4 N and increased 30 N probe force.

Phosphorus-31: A table-top method for 3D B-field amplitude and phase measurements.

A novel method of high-spatial-resolution, 3D B-field distribution measurements is presented. The method is independent of the MR-scanner, and it allows for automated acquisitions of complete maps of all magnetic field vector components for both proton and heteronuclear MR coils of arbitrary geometrical shapes. The advantage of the method proposed here, compared with methods based on measurements with an MR-scanner, is that a complete image of both receive and transmit B-fields, including the phase of the B-field, can be acquired.

LIGHT protein: A novel gingival crevicular fluid biomarker associated with increased probing depth after periodontal surgery.

Aim: To evaluate the protein profiles in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in relation to clinical outcomes after periodontal surgery and examine if any selected proteins affect the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in human gingival fibroblasts.

Materials And Methods: This exploratory study included 21 consecutive patients with periodontitis. GCF was collected, and the protein pattern (n = 92) and clinical parameters were evaluated prior to surgery and 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery.

Purpose: One major risk factor for breast cancer is high mammographic density. It has been estimated that dense breast tissue contributes to ~ 30% of all breast cancer. Prevention targeting dense breast tissue has the potential to improve breast cancer mortality and morbidity.

Objectives: This explorative study analyses interrelationships between peripheral compounds in saliva, plasma, and muscles together with body composition variables in healthy subjects and in fibromyalgia patients (FM). There is a need to better understand the extent cytokines and chemokines are associated with body composition and which cytokines and chemokines differentiate FM from healthy controls.

Methods: Here, 32 female FM patients and 30 age-matched female healthy controls underwent a clinical examination that included blood sample, saliva samples, and pain threshold tests.

Background: Liver cirrhosis, the advanced stage of many chronic liver diseases, is associated with escalated risks of liver-related complications like decompensation and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Morbidity and mortality in cirrhosis patients are linked to portal hypertension, sarcopenia, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although conventional cirrhosis management centered on treating complications, contemporary approaches prioritize preemptive measures.

Background: The increased prevalence of insulin resistance is one of the major health risks in society today. Insulin resistance involves both short-term dynamics, such as altered meal responses, and long-term dynamics, such as the development of type 2 diabetes. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the liver manifestation of the metabolic syndrome with global prevalence reaching epidemic levels. Despite the high disease burden in the population only a small proportion of those with NAFLD will develop progressive liver disease, for which there is currently no approved pharmacotherapy. Identifying those who are at risk of progressive NAFLD currently requires a liver biopsy which is problematic.
