An analysis of 308 patients with carcinoma of the larynx was performed with respect to local recurrence and complications in relation to treatment level. The patients received primary irradiation with some difference in absorbed dose but with an equal fractionation schedule. Analysed in subgroups, correlations between local recurrence and treatment level were either demonstrated or strongly indicated.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA series of 359 patients with carcinoma of the larynx was found to be very close to being representative of the northern part of Jutland, Denmark (north of Kongeåen). No unequivocal change in the disease as regards sex, age, histology, symptoms and signs, and stage of disease could be observed during the period 1963 to 1972. A not statistically significant improvement in the corrected mortality appeared.

Twelve cases are submitted, 10 treated by surgery and two conservatively. There was a male preponderance 11:1, and half the patients were over 25 years.

The 24 dogs were studied by measurements of lung function and hemodynamics. During the shock period no impairment of lung function was observed.

All cases of epidermoid carcinoma were retrospectively classified according to the TNM system. Primary treatment consisted in irradiation in all cases of malignant lymphoma and epidermoid carcinoma.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFEsthesioneuroblastomas are malignant tumours, usually of slow, invasive growth and low metastatic rate. Skeletal destruction must be assumed to be common, but is often demonstrable only by tomographic sections. Clinically these tumours do not differ from others of the same site, so that the diagnosis has to be based upon the histological appearances.

Pigeons were exposed to variable-interval and fixed-interval schedules and schedules approximating variable-interval and fixed-interval schedules. The probabilities of the variable-interval and fixed-interval components in a mixed fixed-interval variable-interval schedule in Experiment I and the minimum and maximum interreinforcement intervals in Experiment II in a variable-interval schedule were manipulated to create intermediate schedule contingencies and contingencies approximating simple variable-interval or fixed-interval contingencies. Maximal control by time as defined by quantitative indices of the temporal pattern of response occurred as fixed-interval contingencies were approximated and minimal control occurred as variable-interval contingencies were approximated.

A multifactorial microscopic grading of malignancy was performed on a clinically well examined series of 129 patients with laryngeal carcinoma. The microscopic score was statistically significantly correlated to the frequency or regional lymph-node metastases and to the death rate. It afforded important supplementary information for the T-classification and for the prognosis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute changes of lung function and morphology were studied in 3 groups of dogs: after bilateral hilar stripping by ipsilateral approach (group 1), after right-side hilar stripping and left pneumonectomy by left-sided approach only (group 2) and in a control group. All dogs of group 1 showed a syndrome corresponding to functional hilar stripping with absent Hering-Breuer and cough reflex, slow respiration with increased tidal volume and discharge of fluid from the airways. Alveolar ventilation and oxygen tension, dead space/tidal volume ratio and pulmonary shunting did not change.

In a series of 49 patients with epidermoic carcinoma of the tongue microscopy of the primary biopsy was performed, using a multifactorial grading system consisting of 8 parameters, each of 4 grades. The score value (degree of malignancy) revealed a statistically significant correlation with the frequency of regional metastases. As this was particularly marked in the T1 and T2 groups, it seems to be an important supplement to the clinical evaluation of risk groups.

A retrospective microscopic evaluation of primary biopsies was carried out in a material of 438 patients with carcinoma of the lip. A multifactorial grading system consisting of 8 parameters, each sub-divided into 4 grades, was used. The degree of malignancy showed a statistically significant correlation to the frequency of metastases, frequency of recurrence or residual tumour, mortality and T classification.

All the cases of carcinoma were TNM classified in retrospect. 60Co irradiation appeared to afford a somewhat better prognosis than conventional irradiation previously used.

Lung function was measured at regular intervals.
