To curb the obesity epidemic, it is imperative that we improve our understanding of the mechanisms controlling fat mass and body weight regulation. While great progress has been made in mapping the biological feedback forces opposing weight loss, the mechanisms countering weight gain remain less well defined. Here, we integrate a mouse model of intragastric overfeeding with a comprehensive evaluation of the regulatory aspects of energy balance, encompassing food intake, energy expenditure, and fecal energy excretion.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how using small datasets to select an optimal cutoff score for the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) can lead to inaccurate results.
  • Researchers evaluated whether data-driven methods for cutoff selection resulted in scores that were significantly different from the true population optimal score and if these methods produced biased accuracy estimates.
  • Findings showed that many small studies frequently failed to identify the correct optimal cutoff score, particularly in smaller samples, leading to an overestimation of test sensitivity.

Poverty is associated with poorer mental health in early adulthood. Cash transfers (CTs) have been shown to improve child health and education outcomes, but it is unclear whether these effects may translate into better mental health outcomes as children reach young adulthood. Using a quasi-experimental approach that exploits variation across countries in the timing of national CT programme introduction, we examine whether longer exposure to CTs during childhood (0-17 years) reduces depressive symptoms in early adulthood (18-30 years).

Background: HIV is characterised by high rates of comorbidity with mental health conditions including depression, as such, the detection and treatment of comorbid depression is critical to achieve viral load suppression. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a collaborative care intervention for depression among adults with comorbid depression symptoms receiving ART in primary health care (PHC) facilities.

Methods: We conducted a pragmatic cluster-randomised trial in 40 clinics in the North West province of South Africa.

Background: Early diagnosis and triage of patients with ischemic stroke is essential for rapid reperfusion therapy. The prehospital delay may be substantial and patients from rural districts often arrive at their local hospital too late for disability-preventing thrombolytic therapy due to prolonged transport times.

Methods: Hallingdal District Medical Centre (HDMC) is located in a rural area of Norway and is equipped with a computed tomography (CT) scanner.

Article Synopsis
  • Ghana faces a critical mental healthcare gap of 95-98%, leading to the implementation of district mental healthcare plans (DMHPs) in three areas by Ghana Somubi Dwumadie to improve services.
  • The initiative aimed to enhance mental health care by training non-specialist workers, enrolling individuals in relevant programs, and employing evaluation methods like routine data and health surveys within a Theory of Change framework.
  • Although there were positive outcomes like better integration of services and increased enrollment (691 users), challenges remained, including limited resource commitment and inadequate improvement in primary care workers' ability to identify key mental health issues.

Introduction: Older patients with gastroesophageal (GE) cancer are at increased risk of low treatment tolerability and poor outcome. Dose reduced chemotherapy has been shown to improve tolerability without compromising efficacy in advanced GE cancer. However, the impact of reduced dose preoperative chemotherapy in the curative setting of older patients is unknown.

Awareness of medical adhesive-related skin injury (MARSI) has increased in the decade since a foundational consensus report was published in 2013. Additional research has provided greater knowledge of the epidemiology of MARSI, along with its assessment, prevention, and management. To summarize knowledge generated in the past decade and review our current understanding of MARSI, a panel of nine clinical experts from four countries (United States of America, United Kingdom, Canada, and Brazil) convened to discuss the literature published since the initial 2013 document and develop updated recommendations for clinical practice.

Introduction: Older adults are at risk of adverse effects during chemotherapy including nausea and fatigue, but many also suffer from dizziness and peripheral neuropathy. This may lead to balance and walking impairments and increased risk of falls and affect health-related quality of life. Moreover, these symptoms are often underreported with inadequate awareness among health professionals leading to deficient focus on the need for targeted assessment and rehabilitation.

Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is highly valued among older adults with cancer. The Geriatric 8 screening tool identifies individuals with frailty, but its association with HRQoL remains sparsely investigated. Herein, we evaluate whether Geriatric 8 frailty is associated with short-term and long-term HRQoL in older patients with cancer.

Introduction: The selection of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for acute ischemic stroke in the elderly remains challenging due to the underrepresentation of these patients in landmark randomized trials. The aim of this study was to assess the association between age and the pre-stroke modified Rankin scale score with functional outcomes after EVT in elderly patients aged ≥80 years.

Methods: We prospectively collected data from consecutive elderly patients who underwent EVT of the anterior or posterior circulation at our institution between 2007 and 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • A Job Exposure Matrix (JEM) was developed to evaluate occupational hand-wrist exposures linked to job titles and hand-wrist disorders in Denmark, covering 96 job groups.
  • The JEM was validated through expert ratings and showed fair to good inter-rater reliability while revealing that carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) risk increased with greater levels of force, repetition, and vibration.
  • The study concluded that the JEM effectively identifies risk factors for CTS and provides insights into exposure-response relationships and interactions between different types of work-related exposures.

Introduction: Promoting mental health, preventing and treating mental disorders are critically important in public health, and many randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluate intervention strategies for these objectives. However, distinguishing promotion from prevention and from treatment RCTs is challenging. A tool to place studies along the promotion-to-treatment continuum in mental health research does not exist, leaving it to researchers and policymakers to decide on how to classify individual RCTs, which hinders evidence synthesis.

Introduction: Resilience to anticancer treatment for colorectal cancer (CRC) among older patients varies. Many experience weight loss, physical decline, falls, and hospitalization during treatment, often leading to early discontinuation of otherwise effective chemotherapy. Screening for vulnerability might help to identify patients at risk of these adverse outcomes in older adults.

Introduction: Adolescence is a critical time for mental health promotion and prevention and establishing healthy behaviours. Implementing universal, school-based psychosocial interventions can improve short- and long-term health trajectories for adolescents. While these interventions may offer important opportunities for fostering skills and relationships, few school-based interventions have been developed for and tested in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where adolescent mental health needs may be significant and under-served.
