Article Synopsis
  • A unique cold finger specifically designed for angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy was created, incorporating in situ helium reliquification and a removable pulse tube cryocooler.
  • The design features minimal vibration, operates from 1.7 K to 400 K, and maintains Ultra High Vacuum conditions while allowing for easy replacement of non-UHV heaters.
  • In continuous mode, the cold finger can keep a sample at 2.6 K, and in single shot mode, it can achieve temperatures as low as 1.8 K for several hours.

In a type I Dirac or Weyl semimetal, the low-energy states are squeezed to a single point in momentum space when the chemical potential μ is tuned precisely to the Dirac/Weyl point. Recently, a type II Weyl semimetal was predicted to exist, where the Weyl states connect hole and electron bands, separated by an indirect gap. This leads to unusual energy states, where hole and electron pockets touch at the Weyl point.

We use ultrahigh resolution, tunable, vacuum ultraviolet laser-based, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), temperature- and field-dependent resistivity, and thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements to study the electronic properties of WTe2, a compound that manifests exceptionally large, temperature-dependent magnetoresistance. The Fermi surface consists of two pairs of electron and two pairs of hole pockets along the X-Γ-X direction. Using detailed ARPES temperature scans, we find a rare example of a temperature-induced Lifshitz transition at T≃160  K, associated with the complete disappearance of the hole pockets.

We have developed an angle-resolved photoemission spectrometer with tunable vacuum ultraviolet laser as a photon source. The photon source is based on the fourth harmonic generation of a near IR beam from a Ti:sapphire laser pumped by a CW green laser and tunable between 5.3 eV and 7 eV.
