Unscheduled R-loops usually cause DNA damage and replication stress, and are therefore a major threat to genome stability. Several RNA processing factors, including the conserved THO complex and its associated RNA and DNA-RNA helicase UAP56, prevent R-loop accumulation in cells. Here, we investigate the function of ALYREF, an RNA export adapter associated with UAP56 and the THO complex, in R-loop regulation.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to cause hospitalizations and severe disease in children and adults.

Methods: This study compared the risk factors, symptoms, and outcomes of children and adults hospitalized for COVID-19 from March 2020 to May 2023 across age strata at 5 US sites participating in the Predicting Viral-Associated Inflammatory Disease Severity in Children with Laboratory Diagnostics and Artificial Intelligence consortium. Eligible patients had an upper respiratory swab that tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 by nucleic acid amplification.

Purpose: Report the clinical findings, risk factors, treatment, and visual outcomes associated with  endophthalmitis in comparison to culture-positive endophthalmitis associated with non- species.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of adults between 18 and 89 years of age diagnosed with exogenous culture-positive endophthalmitis between January 1, 2009, and January 1, 2018, at the Duke Eye Center (Durham, North Carolina) with at least six months of follow-up from time of initial diagnosis was conducted. Clinical data including patient demographics, ocular history, baseline corrected visual acuity (VA) prior to presentation, time to presentation, presenting exam findings, VA at presentation, presumed etiology of endophthalmitis, medical and surgical management, and VA at the six-month follow-up was extracted and statistically analyzed.

Genome integrity relies on the accuracy of DNA metabolism, but as appreciated for more than four decades, transcription enhances mutation and recombination frequencies. More recent research provided evidence for a previously unforeseen link between RNA and DNA metabolism, which is often related to the accumulation of DNA-RNA hybrids and R-loops. In addition to physiological roles, R-loops interfere with DNA replication and repair, providing a molecular scenario for the origin of genome instability.

RECQL5 is a member of the conserved RecQ family of DNA helicases involved in the maintenance of genome stability that is specifically found in higher eukaryotes and associates with the elongating RNA polymerase II. To expand our understanding of its function we expressed human RECQL5 in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which does not have a RECQL5 ortholog. We found that RECQL5 expression leads to cell growth inhibition, increased genotoxic sensitivity and transcription-associated hyperrecombination.

Large hiatal hernias, besides being more prevalent in the elderly, have a different clinical presentation: less reflux, more mechanical symptoms, and a greater possibility of acute, life-threatening complications such as gastric volvulus, ischemia, and visceral mediastinal perforation. Thus, surgical indications are distinct from gastroesophageal reflux disease-related sliding hiatal hernias. Heartburn tends to be less intense, while symptoms of chest pain, cough, discomfort, and tiredness are reported more frequently.

Objective: To determine the diagnostic value of axial T1-weighted imaging for patients suffering from lower back pain.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective study, 100 consecutive lumbar spine MRIs obtained in patients with chronic low back pain were reviewed in two sessions: First, readers viewed core sequences (sagittal T1-weighted, STIR and T2-weighted, and axial T2-weighted) with axial T1-weighted sequences, and second, readers viewed cores sequences alone. Readers recorded the presence of disc degeneration, nerve root compromise, facet joint arthritis, and stenosis at each lumbar spine level as well as the presence of lipoma of filum terminale (LFT), spondylolisthesis, transitional vertebrae, and fractures.

The development of automatic methods for image and video quality assessment that correlate well with the perception of human observers is a very challenging open problem in vision science, with numerous practical applications in disciplines such as image processing and computer vision, as well as in the media industry. In the past two decades, the goal of image quality research has been to improve upon classical metrics by developing models that emulate some aspects of the visual system, and while the progress has been considerable, state-of-the-art quality assessment methods still share a number of shortcomings, like their performance dropping considerably when they are tested on a database that is quite different from the one used to train them, or their significant limitations in predicting observer scores for high framerate videos. In this work we propose a novel objective method for image and video quality assessment that is based on the recently introduced Intrinsically Non-linear Receptive Field (INRF) formulation, a neural summation model that has been shown to be better at predicting neural activity and visual perception phenomena than the classical linear receptive field.
