[Recommendations for the care of the healthy normal newborn at delivery and during the first postnatal hours].

Standardised normal newborn care at delivery and during the first hours of life is one of the objectives of the Spanish National Society of Neonatology. The object of this review is to apply the best evidence possible to the procedures of the care of the newborn from delivery and during the first moments after delivery; as well as standards and routines in care to improve quality and the safety of the newborn. A PubMed (MeSH) review using the key words: term newborn; prophylaxis of ophthalmia neonatorum; haemorrhagic disease of the newborn; neonatal jaundice; neonatal screening and hospital discharge.

A clinicopathological study of pulmonary mucormycosis in cancer patients: extensive angioinvasion but limited inflammatory response.

Objectives: Pulmonary mucormycosis (PMM) is an emerging, frequently lethal fungal infection in immunosuppressed cancer patients. We sought to characterize the histopathologic features of PMM in this population.

Methods: We identified patients with PMM who underwent autopsy or lung biopsy between 1990 and 2007.

Paternal age and assisted reproductive technology outcome in ovum recipients.

This study suggests that paternal age may be inversely associated with reproductive outcome, as demonstrated by a decline in fertilization, blastocyst formation, implantation and cryopreservation rates with advancing age.

Primary schwannoma in a cervical lymph node.

Background: Spindle cell neoplasms within lymph nodes are rare and include benign and malignant tumors and primary and metastatic tumors such as palisaded myofibroblastoma, leiomyoma, leiomyosarcoma, reticular cell neoplasms, and vascular sarcomas. Ancillary studies may help distinguish these neoplasms.

Methods: A 77-year-old white woman was seen with a painless, slowly growing mass of the left neck.

Phase contrast in Simultaneous Topography and Recognition imaging.

The operation of a force microscope in Simultaneous Topography and Recognition (TREC) imaging mode is analyzed by means of numerical simulations. Both topography and recognition signals are analyzed by using a worm-like chain force as the specific interaction between the functionalized tip probe and the sample. The special feedback mechanism in this mode is shown to couple the phase signal to the presence of molecular recognition interactions even in absence of dissipation.

Rescue me: saving the vulnerable non-ICU patient population.

Background: From 2003-2005, a comprehensive review of all cardiac/respiratory arrests at Mission Hospital (Mission Viejo, California) uncovered deficits in knowledge and judgment in the hours preceding 75% of our non-ICU patients. Nearly half of all arrests were occurring outside the ICU, with an overall mortality rate of 60%. In addition, transfers into ICU from the floor averaged 96 patients per month.

Warthin adenocarcinoma: analysis of 2 cases of a distinct salivary neoplasm.

Carcinomas arising in or from the epithelial component of preexisting parotid Warthin tumors (WTs) are rare; the other histologic types of carcinoma found to arise from WTs are adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified, undifferentiated, mucoepidermoid, squamous cell, and oncocytic. The aim of this study is to describe the clinicopathologic features of a distinct salivary gland neoplasm, previously undescribed, with a striated duct phenotype arising from WT. We have designated this neoplasm "Warthin adenocarcinoma" (WA).

Sympathetic outflow activates the venom gland of the snake Bothrops jararaca by regulating the activation of transcription factors and the synthesis of venom gland proteins.

The venom gland of viperid snakes has a central lumen where the venom produced by secretory cells is stored. When the venom is lost from the gland, the secretory cells are activated and new venom is produced. The production of new venom is triggered by the action of noradrenaline on both alpha(1)- and beta-adrenoceptors in the venom gland.

Spatial patterns of parasitism of the solitary parasitoid Pseudapanteles dignus (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

We examined the interaction between the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), a key pest of tomato crops in South America, and its main solitary larval parasitoid, Pseudapanteles dignus (Muesebeck) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The pattern of parasitism of T. absoluta by the parasitoid was studied at three scales on tomato crops: plant, leaf, and leaflet.

Clinical features and differential diagnoses of solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the thyroid: a case report.

A 40-year-old woman presented with a rapidly enlarging palpable thyroid mass. The patient underwent a total thyroidectomy. The tumor fulfilled the criteria of primary solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP), including cellular expression of the CD138 and lambda light chain antibodies.

Primary sinonasal choriocarcinoma.

Primary choriocarcinoma of sinonasal tract has not been previously documented. The aim of the study was to report, for the first time, 2 cases of primary sinonasal choriocarcinoma. The differential diagnosis is discussed and also the theories concerning the histogenesis of this neoplasm are briefly reviewed.

Peruvian Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor strains possess a distinct region in the Vibrio seventh pandemic island-II that differentiates them from the prototype seventh pandemic El Tor strains.

A collection of environmental and clinical strains of Vibrio cholerae O1 isolated from the beginning of the Latin American epidemic of cholera in 1991 to 2003 from multiple locations in Peru were characterized and compared with V. cholerae O1 El Tor strains of the seventh pandemic from the rest of the world (Asia, Africa, Australia and Europe) using a multilocus virulence gene profiling strategy and DNA sequencing. Peruvian strains differed from El Tor strains from the rest of the world by the failure of PCR to amplify genes VC0512, VC0513, VC0514 and VC0515 in the Vibrio seventh pandemic island-II (VSP-II) gene cluster.

Sinonasal chondromyxoid fibroma.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare benign cartilaginous tumor that usually arises from the metaphysis of long bones. In rare cases, however, CMF presents in unusual locations, such as the facial bones and sinonasal tract. We present a case of a 60-year-old woman with a CMF of the nasal septum.

Fatal cytomegalovirus pneumonia in patients with haematological malignancies: an autopsy-based case-control study.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonia is a life-threatening infection in patients with haematological malignancies (HMs) or in haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients. To assess the incidence and risk factors for developing fatal CMV pneumonia in these patients, a case-control study based on 999 autopsies was performed at The University of Texas M. D.

Oral calcifying fibrous pseudotumor: case analysis and review.

Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor (CFT) is a rare distinct soft-tissue lesion characterized histologically by lymphoplasmacytic aggregates in a rich collagenized background with abundant psammomatous and dystrophic calcifications. Occurring most often in children and young adults, CFTs are clinically benign lesions that can form over a broad anatomic distribution, including in subcutaneous and deep soft tissues, as well as in serosal and visceral locations. The cause and mechanisms of pathogenesis of CFT are unknown.

Effect of 5-aminosalicylates on renal function in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: 4-year follow-up study.

Objective: Nephrotoxicity has been described in some patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) treated with 5-aminosalicylates (5-ASA). Our aim was to conduct a retrospective study of IBD patients, both with and without 5-ASA treatment, who underwent regular evaluation of renal function over a 4-year period.

Methods: Serum creatinine was measured before the start of 5-ASA therapy, and thereafter yearly up to 4 years.

Eosinophil-rich squamous carcinoma of the oral cavity: a study of 13 cases and delineation of a possible new microscopic entity.

We report 13 cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the oral cavity characterized by a prominent eosinophilic infiltration of the stroma. All patients were adults, 10 men and 3 women (aged 54 to 92 years; median, 71 years). They presented with tumors of the gingiva (5 cases), tongue (3 cases), palatine tonsil (2 cases), palate (2 cases), and mucosal aspect of lip (1 case).

Liposarcoma of the head and neck: The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center experience.

Background: Our aim was to review our experience with liposarcoma of the head and neck region.

Methods: This is a retrospective case series at a comprehensive cancer center (1945-2005).

Results: Of 30 patients, 10 (33%) were initially misdiagnosed.

Carbohydrate-carbohydrate interaction prominence in 3D supramolecular self-assembly.

Self-association in water of biologically significant carbohydrate molecules is a controversial topic due to the strong solvation of these molecules in this solvent and the difficulty to experimentally detect these very weak intermolecular forces by biophysical techniques. Herein we report the tremendous ability of amphiphilic carbohydrate molecules to form complex three-dimensional architectures. We have experimentally observed the 3D self-assembly into multilayers of disaccharide neoglycolipid dimers on graphite by means of noncontact AFM and we have also theoretically modeled the interaction between two dimers in order to learn about the structure and composition of these layers.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the external auditory canal.

Objective/hypothesis: To describe the clinical history and outcome of patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the external auditory canal (EAC).

Study Design: Retrospective case series.

Methods: A search of our institution's tumor registry identified 22 patients with ACC of the EAC.

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) strains enter and survive within cultured intestinal epithelial cells.

Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) is an emerging pathogen associated to cases of acute or persistent diarrhea in children and adults from developed and developing countries. These microorganisms also have been isolated from human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. EAEC exhibits aggregative adherence (AA) in HEp-2 cells.

Eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis of the sinonasal tract.

Eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis (EAF) is an uncommon inflammatory fibrosing lesion of the upper respiratory tract and orbit that occurs mainly in young to middle-aged women. The etiology of EAF is unknown. To our knowledge, approximately 28 cases have been previously reported in the English literature.

Sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma of the head and neck: a report of 10 patients treated at a single institution and comparison with reported series.

Objectives: To present the clinicopathologic features of 10 sinonasal teratocarcinosarcomas managed at a single center. Teratocarcinosarcoma is a rare morphologically heterogeneous and highly malignant neoplasm. Previous reports of these tumors have focused on their differential diagnosis and histogenesis and consisted of individual case reports and consultation based series.
