An Artificial Intelligence-Based Automatic Classifier for the Presence of False Lumen Thrombosis After Frozen Elephant Trunk Operation.

Objective: To develop an unsupervised artificial intelligence algorithm for identifying and quantifying the presence of false lumen thrombosis (FL) after Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) operation in computed tomography angiographic (CTA) images in an interdisciplinary approach.

Methods: CTA datasets were retrospectively collected from eight patients after FET operation for aortic dissection from a single center. Of those, five patients had a residual aortic dissection with partial false lumen thrombosis, and three patients had no false lumen or thrombosis.

Optimal Cerebral Protection Confirmed by Transcranial Doppler During Transcarotid Artery Revascularization.

Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) is a novel method to treat severe stenosis of the carotid artery with minimal embolization. During TCAR, flow reversal system redirects blood from the internal, external, and common carotid arteries into the femoral vein through a filter system to prevent debris and microparticles from entering the cerebral circulation. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) monitoring allows real-time detection of blood flow in the cerebral arteries during the operation and informs the surgeon of flow changes or possible emboli.

Circulating Phylloquinone and the Risk of Four Female-Specific Cancers: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Background: Observational studies have linked vitamin K and cancer, but the causality of this association remains unknown. This Mendelian randomization (MR) study aims to investigate the association between circulating phylloquinone (vitamin K) levels and four female-specific cancers.

Methods: We used four single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to instrument phylloquinone, with the reported F-statistic 16.

Robotic right lower lobectomy for a persistent large pulmonary arteriovenous malformation following repeated coil embolization.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations create continuous shunting of unoxygenated blood through the lungs into the systemic circulation. These malformations are asymptomatic if small, but cause serious symptoms as they grow in size. Treatment primarily consists of endovascular embolization; lobectomy is preserved for recurring or endovascularly untreatable cases.

Internal Carotid Artery Hypoplasia Misidentified as Internal Carotid Artery Dissection.

Agenesis or hypoplasia of the internal carotid artery (ICA) may easily be confused with dissection or occlusion. We report a case of a 24-year-old female with complaint of acute left-hand hypoesthesia and a history of occasional intermittent numbness of her right hand with myoclonic jerking. Because previous imaging studies over 2 years were interpreted as occlusion of the left ICA secondary to carotid dissection, the treating physician had prescribed anticoagulant therapy.

Employing magnetic resonance histology for precision chronic limb-threatening ischemia treatment planning.

Objective: Recent randomized controlled trials have demonstrated a notable prevalence of immediate technical failures in percutaneous vascular interventions (PVIs) for complex arterial lesions associated with chronic limb-threatening ischemia. Current imaging modalities present inherent limitations in identifying these lesions, making it challenging to determine the most suitable candidates for PVI. We present a novel preprocedural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) histology protocol for identifying lesions that might present a higher rate of immediate and midterm PVI failure.

Inhibiting gene transcription reduces induction of ICAM-1 in inflamed retinal endothelium. Based on published literature implicating transcription factor ETS-1 as an activator of gene transcription, we investigated the effect of ETS-1 blockade on ICAM-1 levels in cytokine-stimulated human retinal endothelial cells.

A Rare Case of Internal Jugular Venous Malformation Treated by Surgical Excision.

This paper reports a case of an internal jugular venous malformation (IJVM) and route of treatment in a patient with limited symptoms. After history and imaging studies, a determination of surgical excision was made to rule out possible malignancy and future problems such as thrombosis. The mass was resected, and part of the IJVM was ligated.

Uncovering Predictors of Low Hippocampal Volume: Evidence from a Large-Scale Machine-Learning-Based Study in the UK Biobank.

Introduction: Hippocampal atrophy is an established biomarker for conversion from the normal ageing process to developing cognitive impairment and dementia. This study used a novel hypothesis-free machine-learning approach, to uncover potential risk factors of lower hippocampal volume using information from the world's largest brain imaging study.

Background: Ovarian cancer (OC) is commonly diagnosed among older women who have comorbidities. This hypothesis-free phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) aimed to identify comorbidities associated with OC, as well as traits that share a genetic architecture with OC.

Methods: We used data from 181,203 white British female UK Biobank participants and analysed OC and OC subtype-specific genetic risk scores (OC-GRS) for an association with 889 diseases and 43 other traits.

Longitudinal Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Based Superficial Femoral Artery Velocity Measurements in Diabetic and Nondiabetic Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease.

Background: Longitudinal associations of noninvasive 2-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (2D-PC-MRI) velocity markers of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) were analyzed along with the characteristics of peripheral artery disease (PAD). We hypothesized that the 2-year differences in MRI-based measures of SFA velocity were associated with longitudinal changes in markers of PAD.

Methods: A total of 33 (11 diabetic, 22 nondiabetic) patients with PAD with baseline and 2-year follow-up MRI scans were included in this secondary analysis of the Effect of Lipid Modification on Peripheral Artery Disease after Endovascular Intervention Trial (ELIMIT).

Image Guidance Techniques and Treatment Approach Optimization in the Management of Type-II Endoleak After Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair.

Background: Over the past 3 decades endovascular aortic aneurysm repair emerged as the primary approach for abdominal aortic aneurysm management, however the occurrence of endoleak following endograft implantation imposes a high toll on patients and hospitals alike. The early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of endoleaks is associated with better outcomes, which calls for more advanced imaging and a standardized approach for endoleak diagnosis and management following endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. Although conventional strategy with non-targeted deployment of coils and embolic material in the aneurysm sac is considered to be the standard approach in many hospitals, it may not prove to be a viable option, given that it affects any further follow-up imaging in the event of sub-optimal therapy and consequent recurrence.

Endovascular retrieval of a fractured Optease inferior vena cava filter using endobronchial forceps and intraoperative cone-beam computed tomography guidance.

Endovascular retrieval of fractured inferior vena cava (IVC) filters after the manufacturer recommended indwelling time can be challenging and require advanced retrieval techniques. We describe an endovascular retrieval technique of a fractured Optease IVC filter in a 57-year-old woman using endobronchial forceps and intraoperative cone-beam computed tomography guidance. Following incomplete filter retrieval, the location and orientation of fractured strut was confirmed by cone-beam computed tomography venography.

The lining of our intestinal surface contains an array of hormone-producing cells that are collectively our bodies' largest endocrine cell reservoir. These "enteroendocrine" (EE) cells reside amongst the billions of absorptive epithelial and other cell types that line our gastrointestinal tract and can sense and respond to the ever-changing internal environment in our gut. EE cells release an array of important signalling molecules that can act as hormones, including glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) which are co-secreted from L cells.

Emerging Applications for Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence in Management of the Cardiovascular Patient.

Artificial intelligence and telemedicine promise to reshape patient care to an unprecedented extent, leading to a safer and more sustainable work environment and improved patient care. In this article, we summarize how these emerging technologies can be used in the care of cardiovascular patients in such ways as fall detection and prevention, virtual nursing, remote case support, automation of instrument counts in the operating room, and efficiency optimization in the cardiovascular suite.

Hypothesis-free discovery of novel cancer predictors using machine learning.

Background: Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and better understanding of the risk factors could enhance prevention.

Methods: We conducted a hypothesis-free analysis combining machine learning and statistical approaches to identify cancer risk factors from 2828 potential predictors captured at baseline. There were 459,169 UK Biobank participants free from cancer at baseline and 48,671 new cancer cases during the 10-year follow-up.

Objective: We evaluated how contemporary data on infrapopliteal vessel preparation have been reported to identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for future research.

Methods: A literature search was performed on Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar to identify clinical research studies reporting on the outcomes of vessel preparation in below-the-knee lesions between 2006 and 2021. Studies were excluded if they were case reports or case series with a sample size of <10.

Genetically instrumented LDL-cholesterol lowering and multiple disease outcomes: A Mendelian randomization phenome-wide association study in the UK Biobank.

Aims: Lipid-lowering medications are widely used to control blood cholesterol levels and manage a range of cardiovascular and lipid disorders. We aimed to explore the possible associations between LDL lowering and multiple disease outcomes or biomarkers.

Methods: We performed a Mendelian randomization phenome-wide association study (MR-PheWAS) in 337 475 UK Biobank participants to test for associations between four proposed LDL-C-lowering genetic risk scores (PCSK9, HMGCR, NPC1L1 and LDLR) and 1135 disease outcomes, with follow-up MR analyses in 52 serum, urine, imaging and clinical biomarkers.
