A case of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis arthritis is presented. Emphasis on early diagnosis and treatment is made. Natives of endemic areas for paracoccidioides could present elsewhere with dissemination of this disease.

A selective liquid medium for direct isolation of Leishmania spp. from mucocutaneous lesions is described. Minimal inhibitory concentrations and synergy studies were performed and used to select 5-fluorocytosine as an antimycotic agent which inhibits contaminating fungi without an adverse effect on the parasite thus permitting its isolation from contaminated lesions.

Diphyllobothrium pacificum, a large tapeworm of seals, is often found as an accidental parasite of man in Perú. The main symptoms is causes are abdominal pain, meteorismus and flatulence, and diarrhea. We report the results of 32 single-dose (10 mg/kg weight) treatments with Praziquantel (Cesol R, EmBay 8440) in 31 patients.

A partially purified Echinococcus antigen solution, prepared by boiling hydatid cyst fluid, was used in the intradermal test for hydatid disease in a Peruvian population. An unexpectedly high rate of positive reactions and poor agreement with serological tests suggested the presence of some agent(s) which produced cross-reactions with Echinococcus granulosus antigens in the intradermal test. Testing of hospital patients infected with a variety of helminths demonstrated nonspecific reactions in persons with Hymenolepis nana, Taenia spp.

Five patients having the "eruptive form" of Carrion's disease were found to have bacteria in the fine fibrillar interstitium of the verrugas. Features suggesting phagocytosis of the organisms by the verruga cells were observed. The bacteria are probably Bartonella because they are similar to Bartonella that parasitize red blood cells in the hematic phase of the disease.
