Objectives: Serum levels of uric acid (S-UA) are influenced by the interaction of genetic and environmental factors; detailed studies of hyperuricemia in children are rare. This retrospective study aimed to analyze the causes, risk factors, and therapeutic approaches associated with the development of hyperuricemia in childhood.

Methods: In a single-center study, serum uric acid levels were analyzed in 33,900 samples from 13,890 children and adolescents<19 years (6760 girls and 7130 boys) obtained between 2013 and 2023.

A new synthetic method for the fabrication of a sensing layer is presented. PANI films as an ion-to-electron transducer were prepared acid-assisted polymerization in concentrated formic acid (HCOOH) in the presence of ethanol and ammonium persulfate (APS, as the initiator). The ratio of monomer to ammonium persulfate was 1 : 0.

A combined study of one of the simplest aromatic hydrocarbons, i.e., methylbenzene (toluene) (TOL), via the annihilation of an ortho-positronium (o-Ps) probe via positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and the rotation dynamics of nitroxide spin probe 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1-oxy (TEMPO) using electron spin resonance (ESR) over a wide temperature range, 10-300 K, is reported.

A study of the rotation dynamics of the spin probe TEMPO by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy in a series of six short- and medium-sized n-alkanes is presented. In addition to the usual crossover effects connected with solid-liquid phase transitions at temperature Tm and the solid-solid transition at Tss, we find a strong correlation between the change in reorientation at the characteristic ESR temperature TfastX1 < Tss and/or Tm with the ratio TfastX1/Tm = 0.76 ± 0.

A joint study of the rotational dynamics and free volume in amorphous 1-propanol (1-PrOH) as a prototypical monohydroxy alcohol by electron spin resonance (ESR) or positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS), respectively, is reported. The dynamic parameters of the molecular spin probe 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO) and the annihilation ones of the atomic ortho-positronium (o-Ps) probe as a function of temperature are compared. A number of coincidences between various effects in the ESR and PALS responses at the corresponding characteristic ESR and PALS temperatures were found suggesting a common origin of the underlying dynamic processes that were identified using viscosity (VISC) in terms of the two-order parameter (TOP) model and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) data.

Background: The incidence of breast cancer has doubled over the past 20 years in the Czech Republic. Hereditary factors may be a cause of young onset, bilateral breast or ovarian cancer, and familial accumulation of the disease. BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations account for an important fraction of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer cases.

Background: Alterations in the highly penetrant cancer susceptibility gene BRCA1 are responsible for the majority of hereditary breast and/or ovarian cancers. However, the number of detected germline mutations has been lower than expected based upon genetic linkage data. Undetected deleterious mutations in the BRCA1 gene in some high-risk families could be due to the presence of intragenic rearrangements as deletions, duplications or insertions spanning whole exons.

The majority of hereditary breast and ovarian cancers can be accounted for by germline mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Genetic counselling and testing in high-risk patients in the Czech Republic began in 1997 in two centres (Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute in Brno, MMCI, and the General University Hospital plus the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Prague, 1FMUK). Health insurance covers testing in MMCI, whereas testing at 1FMUK is covered by research grants.

Germline mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for majority of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. The complete coding sequence analysis of both genes was carried out in 197 breast/ovarian cancer patients from high-risk families and 53 patients with sporadic breast/ovarian cancer. In summary, 59 mutations (16 different) in BRCA1 and 29 mutations (17 different) in BRCA2 were identified in unrelated breast and/or ovarian index cases.

Aims: Because of the high prevalence of prostatic cancer and the limitations of its treatment, enormous effort has been put into the development of new therapeutic modalities. One potential tool is the use of cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors, which are based on the trisubstituted derivatives of purine. The aim of this study was to analyse alterations of the regulatory pathways in both androgen sensitive and androgen insensitive prostatic cancer cell lines (LNCaP and DU-145, respectively) after blockage of the cell cycle by the synthetic CDK inhibitors, olomoucine and bohemine.

The expression of several genes involved in apoptosis and cell cycle control can be regulated by steroid hormones and related agents via their nuclear receptors. Members of the bcl-2 gene family participate in the regulation of apoptosis in a diverse range of cell types and are implicated in the development of hormone refractory prostate cancer and resistance to anti-cancer therapy. The aim of this study, therefore, was to examine the expression of several nuclear receptors in relation to the expression of apoptosis and cell cycle related proteins in a series of patients with early hormone refractory prostate cancer.

Members of the bcl-2 gene family and endogenous inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinases participate in the regulation of apoptosis and cell cycle in a diverse range of cell types and are implicated in the development of hormone refractory prostate cancer and resistance to anti-cancer therapy. The expression of several of these genes can be regulated by steroid hormones and related agents via their nuclear receptors. However, insufficient information considering the protein expression after the treatment by hormone antagonists is available.

Background: In vitro the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) encoded latent membrane protein 1 (LMP-1) has been shown to upregulate expression of matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9), a member of a family of zinc dependent endopeptidases that is believed to facilitate tumour invasion and metastasis by degradation of the extracellular matrix.

Aim: To test whether the expression of MMP-9 in Hodgkin's disease correlates with EBV status and survival and to investigate whether LMP-1 expression affects MMP-9 concentrations in the Hodgkin's disease cell line, L428.

Methods: MMP-9 expression was measured by means of immunohistochemistry in a series of Hodgkin's disease tumours and this expression was correlated with EBV status and survival.

A single kidney in patients with agenesis or after nephrectomy is regarded as a risk factor. Primarily, the role of glomerular hyperfiltration and later possible glomerular sclerosis are emphasised. Complex treatment of Wilms tumour patients includes previous chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The paper is the result of five years paediatric, neurological and neurosurgical care of 102 infants with inborn and acquired damage of the central nervous system. Early diagnosis, a suitably indicated neurosurgical operation, comprehensive paediatric and neurosurgical care ensure along with rehabilitation and psychic stimulation, optimum therapeutic results. So far only few reports on results of long-term studies of thus treated child patients were published.
