To determine whether T cells and B cells influence lipid metabolism and atherosclerosis, we crossed apolipoprotein E-deficient (apoE degrees ) mice with recombination activating gene 2-deficient (RAG2 degrees ) mice. Total plasma cholesterol levels were approximately 20% higher in male apoE degrees mice compared with the apoE degrees RAG2 degrees mice at 8 weeks of age, and plasma triglyceride levels were 2.5-fold higher in the apoE degrees mice even when plasma cholesterol levels were similar.

We present evidence for transitions between fluxoid wells of a SQUID due to cascaded, two-photon processes. Such transitions are evidenced by an anomalous dependence on the transition rate from the one-photon resonant level within the initial well, which cannot be explained by previously observed macroscopic resonant tunneling. These two-photon processes may be a significant source of decoherence in SQUID qubits subject to microwave radiation.

Background: Ganglioneuroblastoma, nodular (GNBn) is a rare subtype of the family of neuroblastic tumors (neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroblastoma, and ganglioneuroma) that are classified in the unfavorable histology group according to the International Neuroblastoma Pathology Classification (Shimada system). Tumors of this subtype have been considered to represent a prototypic example of biologically and clinically nonaggressive (Schwannian stroma-rich and stroma-dominant) components combined with biologically and clinically aggressive nodular (Schwannian stroma-poor) components. However, detailed histopathologic analysis as well as thorough prognostic evaluation of patients with this subtype has not been reported.

In 1935, Schrodinger attempted to demonstrate the limitations of quantum mechanics using a thought experiment in which a cat is put in a quantum superposition of alive and dead states. The idea remained an academic curiosity until the 1980s when it was proposed that, under suitable conditions, a macroscopic object with many microscopic degrees of freedom could behave quantum mechanically, provided that it was sufficiently decoupled from its environment. Although much progress has been made in demonstrating the macroscopic quantum behaviour of various systems such as superconductors, nanoscale magnets, laser-cooled trapped ions, photons in a microwave cavity and C60 molecules, there has been no experimental demonstration of a quantum superposition of truly macroscopically distinct states.

Purpose: In 1981, Buchanan and Sheehan described a previously unreported syndrome in three siblings who had iron malabsorption, hypoferremia, and microcytic anemia that did not respond to oral iron and responded only partly to parenteral iron dextran. Ferrokinetic studies were not done in these or subsequently reported patients with this syndrome. It has been postulated that this syndrome of abnormal iron metabolism is analogous to that observed in the mk/mk mouse, which has similar hematologic findings but also has abnormal ferrokinetics.

Background: Children with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who have a slow response to initial chemotherapy (more than 25 percent blasts in the bone marrow on day 7) have a poor outcome despite intensive therapy. We conducted a randomized trial in which such patients were treated with either an augmented intensive regimen of post-induction chemotherapy or a standard regimen of intensive post-induction chemotherapy.

Methods: Between January 1991 and June 1995, 311 children with newly diagnosed ALL who were either 1 to 9 years of age with white-cell counts of at least 50,000 per cubic millimeter or 10 years of age or older, had a slow response to initial therapy, and entered remission at the end of induction chemotherapy were randomly assigned to receive standard therapy (156 children) or augmented therapy (155).

Purpose: To identify a biologically favorable and unfavorable subset of patients with Evans stage III neuroblastoma and to determine whether treatment stratification would improve the event-free survival (EFS) for high-risk patients and maintain excellent EFS for the lower-risk patients.

We have investigated the antidiabetic action of troglitazone in aP2/DTA mice, whose white and brown fat was virtually eliminated by fat-specific expression of diphtheria toxin A chain. aP2/DTA mice had markedly suppressed serum leptin levels and were hyperphagic, but did not gain excess weight. aP2/DTA mice fed a control diet were hyperlipidemic, hyperglycemic, and had hyperinsulinemia indicative of insulin-resistant diabetes.
