Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for imaging the tendons and the ligaments of the ankle. MRI combines excellent tissue contrast and accurate anatomic delineation of joint structures. In the first article of this series, we discussed a compartmental approach to the interpretation of ankle pathology focusing on the anterior and medial compartments.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard for imaging the tendons and the ligaments of the ankle. MRI combines excellent tissue contrast and accurate anatomic delineation of joint structures. In this pictorial essay, the first of two parts, we delineate the ankle into anatomic compartments and use this as a template for describing pathology in each compartment.

Although the majority of these will be benign, the differential diagnosis is broad and increasingly, doctors are turning to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a first-line investigation when presented with these sorts of lesions, both to narrow the differential diagnosis and exclude malignancy. PME6 was primarily associated with the shrinkage and collapse of drying timber, which are phenotypic traits consistent with the role of pectin as a hydrophilic polysaccharide. PME7 was primarily associated with cellulose and pulp yield traits and had an inverse correlation with lignin content.
