The paper presents a study concerning the role of ferroelectric filler size and clustering in the dielectric properties of 20%BaTiO-80%PVDF and of 20% (2%Ag-98%BaTiO)-PVDF hybrid nanocomposites. By finite element calculations, it was shown that using fillers with ε > 10 does not provide a permittivity rise in the composites and the effective dielectric constant tends to saturate to specific values determined by the filler size and agglomeration degree. Irrespective of the ferroelectric filler sizes, the addition of metallic ultrafine nanoparticles (Ag) results in permittivity intensification and the effect is even stronger if the metallic nanoparticles are connected to a higher degree with the ferroelectric particles' surfaces.

Lead-free piezoelectric ceramics with nominal composition at morphotropic phase boundary BaCaTiZrO (BCTZ) prepared by different processing routes and sintered either by conventional solid-state reaction or by spark plasma sintering (SPS) techniques were comparatively investigated to observe the role of structural modifications and of microstructures on the dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and electrocaloric responses. The ceramics presented relative densities from 75% to 97% and showed variations in their phase composition as a result of variable mixing and different synthesis and sintering parameters providing local compositional heterogeneity. The present paper reports the dependence of dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties on the porosity level in BaZrTiO ceramics with porosity from 5% to 21%. Microporosity with 0-3 connectivity has been produced using PMMA microspheres as a sacrificial template. The functional properties (dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric effect) are mostly affected by the "dilution effect": permittivity decreases by 40% when porosity increases by 21%, and P decreases from 13 to 5 µC/cm while the P is in the range of (2-8) µC/cm.

Proprioception, the perception of body and limb position, is mediated by proprioceptors, specialized mechanosensory neurons that convey information about the stretch and tension experienced by muscles, tendons, skin and joints. Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) is a polymodal, Ca(2+)-permeable cation channel crucial to regulation of nociceptor responsiveness. Sensitization of TRPV1 by G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) agonists to its endogenous activators, such as low pH and noxious heat, is a key factor in hyperalgesia during tissue injury as well as pathological pain syndromes. Conversely, chronic pharmacological activation of TRPV1 by capsaicin leads to calcium influx-induced adaptation of the channel.

The activity of the cold- and menthol-activated transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) channels diminishes over time in the presence of extracellular Ca(2+), a phenomenon referred to as desensitization or adaptation. Here we show that activation of TRPM8 by cold or menthol evokes a decrease in cellular phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate [PtdIns(4,5)P(2)] levels. The decrease in PtdIns(4,5)P(2) levels was accompanied by increased inositol 1,4,5 trisphosphate (InsP(3)) production, and was inhibited by loading the cells with the Ca(2+) chelator BAPTA-AM, showing that it was the consequence of the activation of phospholipase C (PLC) by increased intracellular Ca(2+) concentrations.

There are conflicting reports on the effect of PtdIns(4,5)P2 on transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels. We show that in excised patches PtdIns(4,5)P2 and other phosphoinositides activate and the PIP2 scavenger poly-Lys inhibits TRPV1.
