Assessing the impact of body composition, metabolic and oxidative stress parameters on insulin resistance as a prognostic marker for reactive hypoglycemia: a cross-sectional study in overweight, obese, and normal weight individuals.

Oxidative stress (OS) plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance (IR), particularly in its association with obesity. This study evaluate both the diagnostic and clinical significance of assessing oxidative status in patients affected by overweight and obesity displaying IR, especially with reactive hypoglycemic episodes (RH). A comprehensive examination of OS biomarkers was carried out, encompassing measurements of total oxidative capacity (TOC) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC).

Cerebral oximetry monitoring by means of INVOS-4100 as a predictor of ischemic events during carotid endarterectomy.

Background: Several methods have been proposed to monitor cerebral perfusion during carotid endarterectomy (CEA), with the purpose of minimizing the risk of perioperative stroke. The INVOS-4100 is able to detect cerebral oxygen saturation providing an intraoperative real-time monitoring system of cerebral oximetry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the INVOS-4100 in predicting cerebral ischemia during CEA.

Une Liaison Dangereuse: Spontaneous Pyeloduodenal Fistula.

We describe the case of a 76-year-old woman with a spontaneous nephroduodenal fistula. The patient was initially evaluated for gastrointestinal and urinary symptoms associated with fever and anemia, after which she was admitted with the diagnosis of right chronic pyelonephritis, hydronephrosis, and renal lithiasis. The fistula was diagnosed incidentally by percutaneous pyelography during a right nephrostomy and was later confirmed with an abdominal CT scan.

Gdynia Oncology Centre of the Polish Red Cross Maritime Hospital in Gdynia Nuclear Medicine Department.

A new Nuclear Medicine Department has been opened in Gdynia. In October 2011, the construction and procuring equipment for the Nuclear Medicine Department (NMD) of the Polish Red Cross Maritime Hospital in Gdynia-Redłowo was completed after several years of efforts.

Radiosynovectomy in the treatment of chronic exsudative arthritis.

Background. Radiosynovectomy (radiosynoviorthesis) is an important instrument for the effective local treatment of chronic inflammatory joint disease, and provides an alternative to surgical synovectomy. Radiosynovectomy leads to the restoration of synovium in the treated joint, with improved joint function due to reduction of pain, swelling and stiffness.

[Histiocytosis X (Langerhans cell histiocytosis) of temporal bone. Role of scintigraphy in disease progress evaluation].

The authors present a case report of a 7-year-old girl with Langerhans cell histiocytosis of temporal bone. Edema and bone destruction involved zygomatic process of temporal bone and temporal fossa without ear occupation. The role of picturing diagnosis in evaluation of lesion extent with special importance of scintigraphy is discussed.

Platelet function and survival in multiple myeloma.

Symptoms of haemorrhagic diathesis are frequently observed in multiple myeloma patients. Their nature is complex and is thought to be connected with platelet function disturbances, coagulation abnormalities and vascular endothelium damage. We demonstrated the shortening of platelet halflife in six myeloma patients.

A case of congenital factor XIII deficiency.

The case of a 53 years old woman was described in whom a congenital factor XIII deficiency was suspected because of deforming scars and hemorrhagic diathesis. A thromboelastographic declination of elasticity as well as decreased factor XIII level up to 5% of normal range were only found in all hemostatic examinations. In 2 children factor XIII decreased to half of its normal level, whereas in the youngest daughter that level was 25%.
