Background: The etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is multifactorial, involving a complex interplay of psychological and physiological factors. While salivary biomarkers, particularly cortisol, play an important role in TMD pathophysiology, evidence in the literature is still scarce and inconsistent. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the applicability of salivary cortisol as a potential biomarker for TMD in adults.

Article Synopsis
  • Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) significantly affect patients' quality of life, impacting their ability to engage in daily activities and causing both physical and mental distress, prompting a comprehensive review of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in TMD cases.
  • A systematic search of literature from 2013 to 2023 identified 15 relevant articles through rigorous criteria, with ten included in a meta-analysis; findings revealed consistently poor OHRQoL among TMD patients, showing high variation in results.
  • The study concluded that the overall OHRQoL is low for TMD patients compared to healthy individuals, indicating a significant impact of TMD on their quality of

Rational: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a rare benign tumor mainly affecting the major salivary glands, known for its diverse histological appearances that can mimic malignancies. When it occurs in the hard palate it present diagnostic and management challenges compared to other sites due to the anatomical location and potential proximity to critical structures. This case reports a rare presentation PA starting as an ulcer, alongside a review of rare cases of PA reported in last 5 years.

Article Synopsis
  • - This systematic review investigates how salivary cortisol levels relate to temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in young adults aged 18-40, using data from six extensive databases.
  • - Fourteen studies were analyzed, including observational and randomized control trials, with a total of 751 participants; most showed that TMD patients had higher cortisol levels compared to healthy individuals.
  • - The review concludes that increased cortisol levels in TMD patients suggest a need for psychological and clinical support, while also highlighting the need for more high-quality research to confirm these findings.

Rationale: Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a multifocal, slowly evolving lesion that resists all types of treatment and has a high propensity for malignant transformation into oral squamous cell carcinoma. Lack of awareness and acquaintance with white lesions of the oral cavity makes it difficult to diagnose. Besides being rare, PVL significantly aggressive, so clinicians need to be aware of it carefully.
