Cardiac involvement in 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) survivors has been reported frequently. An exacerbated immune response may be the main mechanism of myocardial injury and late cardiac sequelae in this population. We investigated the immune profile in hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients with COVID-19 who developed late cardiac fibrosis and edema, as detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Background: Mesenchymal stem cell infusion and vitamin D supplementation may have immunomodulatory actions that could prolong the preservation of residual insulin secretion in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Intervention with these agents after onset of T1D could favor the development of a remission phase, with potential clinical impact. We aimed to compare the presence of clinical remission (CR), glycemic control and daily insulin requirement at 6, 12, 18, 24 and 36 months after the diagnosis of T1D using IDAA1c in patients who received therapy with adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ASC) infusion and vitamin D supplementation and a control group.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate cardiovascular risk factors (CRF) in adolescents aged 10-19, focusing on the impact of social vulnerability, which was determined by lack of access to basic resources like clean water and adequate income.
  • - A total of 517 adolescents participated, with data collected on their physical activity, food intake, and various health measurements, revealing that 32.4% were overweight and over half were physically inactive during leisure time.
  • - Findings indicated that socially vulnerable adolescents generally had lower body measurements and risk factors compared to non-vulnerable peers, but both groups displayed elevated cholesterol levels, suggesting that social vulnerability does not necessarily correlate with increased CRF.

Background: Comorbidities such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes are associated with COVID-19 development and severity, probably due to immune dysregulation; however, the mechanisms underlying these associations are not clear. The immune signatures of hypertensive patients with obesity with COVID-19 may provide new insight into the mechanisms of immune dysregulation and progression to severe disease in these patients.

Methods: Hypertensive patients were selected prospectively from a multicenter registry of adults hospitalized with COVID-19 and stratified according to obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²).

Article Synopsis
  • - Oral isotretinoin (ISO) is an effective medication for severe acne and shows promise in treating photoaging by remodeling collagen in the skin, providing an alternative to topical retinoic acid.
  • - A study comparing skin samples from women aged 45-50 over three periods (before treatment, end of treatment, and 12 weeks post-treatment) found significant increases in collagen I and III after 12 weeks of low-dose ISO treatment.
  • - Results indicate that while collagen levels increased significantly during treatment, the effects on matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) were mixed, suggesting ISO effectively enhances collagen production but may not consistently alter all related enzymes post-treatment.
