Background: The human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) enzyme, encoded by the hTERT gene, synthesizes protective telomeric sequences on chromosomes and plays a fundamental role in cancer formation. Methylation of the hTERT gene has an upregulatory effect, increasing hTERT enzyme synthesis and allowing continuous tumor cell division.

Objective: In a group of patients with breast cancer, we aimed to analyze the methylation status of hTERT in the tumor, surrounding tissue, and circulating free deoxyribonucleic acid (cfDNA) of blood collected on the day of mastectomy and then approximately one year later.

Aging is a complex, natural, and irreversible phenomenon that subjects the body to numerous changes in the physiological process, characterized by a gradual decline in the organism's homeostatic mechanisms, closely related to immunosenescence. Here, we evaluated the regulation of immunosenescence in lymphoid organs of senescence-accelerated prone 8 (SAM-P8) and senescence-accelerated resistant 1 (SAM-R1) mice treated with a low dose of rapamycin (RAPA). Mice were treated with a dose of 7.

T1D can be associated with metabolic disorders and several impaired pathways, including insulin signaling, and development of insulin resistance through the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). The main precursor of RAS is angiotensinogen (Agt) and this system is often linked to autophagy dysregulation. Dysregulated autophagy has been described in T1D and linked to impairments in both glucose metabolism, and leukotrienes (LTs) production.

Article Synopsis
  • Human activities like cutting down forests, climate change, and introducing new species are hurting wildlife in different ways, especially in land and water environments.
  • Scientists want to understand why these impacts are different in land versus water ecosystems by looking at four main processes: how animals and plants spread, how new species form, which species survive better, and how random changes happen.
  • They hope to find new ways to protect nature by looking at these processes and figuring out how human impacts create different problems in each ecosystem.

Impaired metabolic functions underlie the pathophysiology of diabetes and obesity. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is one pathway related to the pathophysiology of both diseases. RAS activation in metabolically active tissues exerts pro-inflammatory effects via angiotensin II (Ang II), linked to dysfunction in cellular processes such as autophagy, which is associated with obesity and diabetes.

The Amazon Basin is an unquestionable biodiversity hotspot, containing the highest freshwater biodiversity on earth and facing off a recent increase in anthropogenic threats. The current knowledge on the spatial distribution of the freshwater fish species is greatly deficient in this basin, preventing a comprehensive understanding of this hyper-diverse ecosystem as a whole. Filling this gap was the priority of a transnational collaborative project, i.

Background: Even though migraine and other primary headache disorders are common and debilitating, major health surveys in Brazil have not included them. We repair this omission by combining data on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Brazilian National Health Survey (PNS) 2013 with epidemiological data on migraine prevalence and severity in Brazil. The purpose is to rank migraine and its impact on public healthh among NCDs in order to support public-health policy toward better care for migraine in Brazil.

We report a new polymorph of (1E,4E)-1,5-bis(4-fluorophenyl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one, CHFO. Contrary to the precedent literature polymorph with Z' = 3, our polymorph has one half molecule in the asymmetric unit disordered over two 50% occupancy sites. Each site corresponds to one conformation around the single bond vicinal to the carbonyl group (so-called anti or syn).

Introduction: High-resolution magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (HR-MAS NMR) spectroscopy enables the analysis of the metabolic profile of plant and animal tissues under close to natural conditions, as well as of other heterogeneous natural or synthetic materials. Neither sample pretreatment is required after fragmentation nor powdering of the sample before insertion into the rotor. However, the efficiency of the method depends strongly on the sample preparation, rotor insertion procedure, and analysis conditions.
