Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluates the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A (BT-A) for treating tennis elbow through a review of randomized clinical trials up until June 2024.
  • Seven trials involving 381 middle-aged patients showed that BT-A significantly reduced pain compared to placebo at two to twelve weeks, but grip strength remained similar between both groups.
  • The study concludes that while BT-A helps alleviate pain in tennis elbow, more research is required for definitive proof of its safety and effectiveness due to limitations in the current studies.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored the presence of pathogenic germline variants in Brazilian patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma, involving 192 unselected patients and analyzing 113 cancer-related genes, revealing a median age of 61 years and a significant portion presenting advanced disease stages.
  • - Of the patients, 6.25% carried pathogenic variants linked to known pancreatic cancer genes, while 13% had variants in genes with less established associations, with CHEK2, ATM, and FANC being the most affected.
  • - No differences in the prevalence of these variants were found based on family cancer history or ancestry, suggesting that all Brazilian pancreatic cancer patients should undergo genetic testing regardless of their background.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how well biologic drugs (IL-23 and IL-17 inhibitors) work for treating psoriasis in patients aged 65 and older compared to younger patients.
  • It found that elderly patients had a higher risk of discontinuing treatment, especially with IL-23 inhibitors, while IL-17 inhibitors didn't show a significant difference.
  • Additionally, factors like previous treatments influenced the likelihood of continuing or stopping the medication in elderly patients.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the occupational doses (eye lens, extremities and whole body) in paediatric cardiac interventional and diagnostic catheterization procedures performed in a paediatric reference hospital located in Recife, Pernambuco. For eye lens dosimetry, the results show that the left eye receives a higher dose than the right eye, and there is a small difference between the doses received during diagnostic (D) and therapeutic (T) procedures. The extrapolated annual values for the most exposed eye are close to the annual limit.

Diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) are a pivotal strategy to be implemented since pediatric interventional cardiology procedures are increasing. This work aimed to propose an initial set of Brazilian DRLs for pediatric interventional diagnostic and therapeutic (D&T) procedures. A retrospective study was carried out in four Brazilian states, distributed across the three regions of the country.

Purpose: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy in female patients with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), a condition associated with an increased risk of various malignancies, including radiation therapy (RT)-induced malignancies (RIM) within previously irradiated areas. Our study aimed to assess the incidence of RIM in patients with LFS and early-stage BC treated with adjuvant RT, including the effect of RT dose and technique.

Methods And Materials: We examined patients with a germline pathogenic/likely pathogenic TP53 variant diagnosed with early-stage BC and monitored by a hereditary cancer team at a single cancer center.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the "drug survival" of several psoriasis treatments, including secukinumab and guselkumab, to compare their effectiveness and predict patient adherence to therapy.
  • Researchers analyzed data from nearly 5,000 treatment courses across multiple countries between 2015 and 2021, focusing on patients with moderate to severe psoriasis using various interleukin inhibitors.
  • Results indicated that IL-23 inhibitors generally had better drug survival rates after 24 and 36 months compared to IL-17 inhibitors, with specific percentages provided for each drug's effectiveness over time.

  • Acquired deficiency of C1 inhibitor (AAE-C1-INH) is a rare cause of recurrent angioedema, with this study focusing on cases from Brazilian reference centers to better understand its characteristics.
  • A total of 14 patients were analyzed, mostly female, with an average symptom onset age of 56.5 years, and a median diagnostic delay of 2 years; the primary symptoms were skin-related.
  • Most patients had abnormal levels of C4 and C1-INH, and many needed long-term treatment; ultimately, 85.7% found resolution of their angioedema issues with appropriate therapy.

Studies of risk perception and risk communication concerning the nuclear area are quite common in scientific literature. However, though numerous studies on this topic point to the importance of scientific and technological knowledge in facilitating the reduction of perceived risks, there are few papers that effectively discuss the role of education in risk communication on the subject, particularly in Brazil. The objective of the present work was to reflect on this problem by analyzing the results obtained from two case studies on the implementation of the Brazilian Multipurpose Reactor, in the city of Iperó, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed data from 50 patients, noting a median age of 7 months at disease onset and significant delays in diagnosis, along with discovering 6 new mutations in the CD40LG gene.
  • * Common symptoms included pneumonia, respiratory infections, and various gastrointestinal issues, with the study documenting the largest number of infectious agents associated with this condition, enhancing insights for diagnosis and management.

Objectives: In breast cancer (BC) patients, the frequency of germline BRCA mutations (gBRCA) may vary according to the ethnic background, age, and family history of cancer. Phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA) is the second most common somatic mutated gene in BC; however, the association of mutations in both genes with cancer has not been thoroughly investigated. Thus, our aims were to investigate gBRCA mutation frequency in a cohort of postmenopausal Brazilian BC patients and the association of gBRCA1/BRCA2 and PIK3CA somatic mutations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the drug survival rates of the latest biologic agents for moderate-to-severe psoriasis, including ustekinumab, secukinumab, ixekizumab, brodalumab, guselkumab, and risankizumab, to understand their effectiveness and safety as well as factors influencing patient adherence to treatment.
  • Conducted in 16 dermatology centers across several countries, the research analyzed medical records from patients who started these medications between 2012 and 2019, using methods like the Kaplan-Meier estimator for survival analysis.
  • Results showed that risankizumab had the highest drug survival rate at 96.4% after 18 months, while secukinumab had the lowest at 79.

Background: Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) is the most frequent type of severe primary immunodeficiency (PID). Clinical manifestations of CVID occur at any age; nevertheless, they are more frequent between the age of 6 and 10 years, and between the age of 20 and 40 years. In medical literature, there are hardly any diagnostic reports on CVID after 50 years of age.
