Lipid profile screening is crucial for the prevention, evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD). Small dense low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (sdLDL-C) is an emerging biomarker associated with CVD and several comorbidities. The aim of this literature review is to discuss the potential importance of sdLDL-C as a surrogate biomarker for managing CVD by explaining its pathophysiology and promising treatments.

Using ELISA, these antibodies were able to recognize PLAs isoforms present in venoms of botropic snakes at 1:6400, 1:3200 and 1:100 ratios (w/w). These antibodies highly recognized proteins of low molecular weight (∼14,000) from crude snake venom Bp and Bm by Western Blotting.

This paper reports the effects of BnSP-7 toxin, a catalytically inactive phospholipase A2 from Bothrops pauloensis snake venom, on Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis. BnSP-7 presented activity against promastigote parasite forms both in the MTT assay, with IC50 of 58.7 μg mL(-1) of toxin, and a growth curve, inhibiting parasite proliferation 60-70% at concentrations of 50-200 μg mL(-1) of toxin 96 h after treatment.

This paper describes a biochemical and pharmacological characterization of BpirPLA(2)-I, the first acidic Asp49-PLA(2) isolated from Bothrops pirajai. BpirPLA(2)-I caused hypotension in vivo, presented phospholipolytic activity upon artificial substrates and inhibitory effects on platelet aggregation in vitro. Moreover, a synthetic peptide of BpirPLA(2)-I, comprising residues of the C-terminal region, reproduced the antiplatelet activity of the intact protein.
