We tried three AMF inoculation treatments: (1) CON-no mycorrhizae; (2) MIX-with AMF from pure collection cultures, and (3) NAT-with native AMF, combined with five doses of P via a nutrient solution.

Multicenter validation of PIM3 and PIM2 in Brazilian pediatric intensive care units.

We have described large kindred with isolated GH deficiency (IGHD) due to a GHRH receptor mutation, resulting in severe short stature and high-pitched voice. These IGHD individuals have little interest in GH treatment, as they consider themselves "short long-lived people", rather than patients.

Determining Optic Nerve Cupping Using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Versus a New Electronic Mobile Device.

Purpose: We present a new device that may aid in glaucoma screening. The vertical cup-to-disc ratio (CDR) obtained from a new electronic mobile device (EMD) was compared with that obtained from a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. In addition, results from examiner's evaluations were compared with the results mentioned above.

Endometriosis and Ovarian Cancer: an Integrative Review (Endometriosis and Ovarian Cancer).

Despite being initially considered a benign disease, it is widely thought nowadays that endometriosis and especially ovarian endometriomas are neoplastic conditions with the potential to become malignant. This review was conducted to summarize, in a concise and systematic manner, the available scientific data relating endometriosis to ovarian cancer, published in the past five years. After reading abstracts and applying our predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, a final list of 11 scientific papers was obtained and subjected to review.

Evaluation on the leishmanicidal activity of 2-N,N'-dialkylamino-1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives.

Parasites of the Leishmania genus are the causative agents of leishmaniasis in humans, a disease that affects more than 12 million people worldwide. In this study was evaluated in vitro leishmanicidal activity of 2-N,N'-dialkylamino-1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives, covering a series of fourteen 2-N-morpholino-, 2-N-thiomorpholino, 2-N-piperidino, 2-N-(N-methyl)-piperazino naphthoquinones (1a-n) derived from nor-lapachol and lawsone, belong to some other di-alkyaminoderivatives. At the cytotoxicity assay on peritoneal macrophages, the compounds possessing larger alkyl groups and N-methyl-piperazino moiety (1d, 1h, 1i and 1k), showed toxic effects similar to the standard drug used pentamidine.

Karyoevolutionary Inferences in Enigmatic Taxon Astyanax (Teleostei: Characidae).

Accessing the taxonomy of fish is a basic condition for the conservation of species, and the understanding of their evolutionary relationships. Many Neotropical species of fishes of the order Characiformes are considered incertae sedis because of a lack of consistent evidence of monophyly, with the genus Astyanax among them. With a cytotaxonomic and evolutionary purpose, we compared the karyotype of two species of Astyanax: Astyanax paranae and Astyanax elachylepis.

Predisposing factors for early infection in patients with open fractures and proposal for a risk score.

Background: The primary goals of orthopedic treatment of open fractures are to prevent infection, stabilize bone injury and restore limb function. The objective of the current study was to identify risk factors associated with infection in patients suffering from open fractures, using the strength of association of these factors to propose a score that enables risk stratification in initial care.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 122 patients who underwent open fracture treatment.

Identification and chromosome mapping of repetitive elements in the Astyanax scabripinnis (Teleostei: Characidae) species complex.

Most part of the eukaryotic genome is composed of repeated sequences or multiple copies of DNA, which were considered as "junk DNA", and may be associated to the heterochromatin. In this study, three populations of Astyanax aff. scabripinnis from Brazilian rivers of Guaratinguetá and Pindamonhangaba (São Paulo) and a population from Maringá (Paraná) were analyzed concerning the localization of the nucleolar organizer regions (Ag-NORs), the As51 satellite DNA, the 18S ribosomal DNA (rDNA), and the 5S rDNA.

Mutations in PCYT1A cause spondylometaphyseal dysplasia with cone-rod dystrophy.

Spondylometaphyseal dysplasia with cone-rod dystrophy is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder characterized by severe short stature, progressive lower-limb bowing, flattened vertebral bodies, metaphyseal involvement, and visual impairment caused by cone-rod dystrophy. Whole-exome sequencing of four individuals affected by this disorder from two Brazilian families identified two previously unreported homozygous mutations in PCYT1A. This gene encodes the alpha isoform of the phosphate cytidylyltransferase 1 choline enzyme, which is responsible for converting phosphocholine into cytidine diphosphate-choline, a key intermediate step in the phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis pathway.

Ulcer due to chronic venous disease: a sociodemographic study in northeastern Brazil.

Background: Venous ulcers account for 70% of chronic leg ulcers and affect about 2-7% of the population, causing much socioeconomic impact and reducing patients' quality of life. In this study we aimed to describe the clinical features of venous ulcers and sociodemographic characteristics of patients with ulcers due to chronic venous disease (CVD).

Methods: This cross-sectional, observational study was conducted at the Vascular Surgery Service, Universidade Federal de Sergipe, in northeastern Brazil.

[Spatial analysis of the social vulnerability of adolescent pregnancy].

The purpose of this study was to present a spatial analysis of the social vulnerability of teenage pregnancy by geoprocessing data on births and deaths present on the Brazilian Ministry of Health databases in order to support intersectoral management actions and strategies based on spatial analysis in neighborhood areas. The thematic maps of the educational, occupational, birth and marital status of mothers, from all births and deaths in the city, presented a spatial correlation with teenage pregnancy. These maps were superimposed to produce social vulnerability map of adolescent pregnancy and women in general.

Lipase Activity among Bacteria Isolated from Amazonian Soils.

The objective of this study was to select lipase-producing bacteria collected from different counties of the Amazon region. Of the 440 bacteria strains, 181 were selected for the lipase assay in qualitative tests at Petri dishes, being 75 (41%) lipase positive. The enzymatic index was determined during fifteen days at different temperatures (30°, 35°, 40°, and 45°C).

Comparison between Ponseti's and Kite's clubfoot treatment methods: a meta-analysis.

The objective of our study was to compare both Kite's and Ponseti's methods to evidence which one is the most efficient technique in the treatment of congenital idiopathic clubfoot, based on a meta-analysis of current scientific literature. We performed a search of the past 20 years of literature (1986 to 2006) on MEDLINE, LILACS, and EMBASE databases for clinical trials that compared both Kite's and Ponseti's methods. The search in the literature provided 4 selected papers for the meta-analysis.

Spondylocostal dysostosis associated with methylmalonic aciduria.

Spondylocostal dysostosis (SCD) is a genetic disorder characterized by vertebral segmentation and formation defects associated with changes of the ribs. Autosomal dominant and recessive modes of inheritance have been reported. Methylmalonic aciduria (MMA) is an inborn error of propionate or cobalamin metabolism.

Evaluation of the incidence of preterm low birth weight in patients undergoing periodontal therapy.

Background: Preterm low birth weight was reported to be related to periodontal infections that might influence the fetus-placenta complex. The aim of this study was to provide periodontal treatment for pregnant women and to evaluate if this treatment can interfere with pregnancy duration and weight of the newborn.

Methods: The sample consisted of 450 pregnant women who were under prenatal care at a polyclinic in Três Corações, Brazil.
