The treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) is challenging, especially since it is considered highly individualized. The Brazilian Academy of Neurology has recognized the need to disseminate knowledge about the management of PD treatment, adapting the best evidence to the Brazilian reality. Thus, the main published treatment guidelines were reviewed based on the recommendations of group from the Movement Disorders Scientific Department of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) manifest visual losses. However, it is not known whether these losses are equivalent in both early-onset (EOPD) and late-onset (LOPD) patients. We evaluated contrast sensitivity and color vision in EOPD and LOPD patients and in age-matched controls.

Approximately 10% of patients with a presumed diagnosis of Parkinson's disease (PD) remain misdiagnosed despite recent advances in neuroimaging. The current study addresses the use of transcranial sonography and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) using (99m)Tc-TRODAT-1 to evaluate the echogenicity of the substantia nigra (SN) and the density of striatal presynaptic dopamine transporters, respectively, in a sample of 20 PD patients (13 males and 7 females) and 9 healthy subjects. The median age of the PD patients was 62 years.

Transcranial sonography has become a useful tool in the differential diagnosis of parkinsonian syndromes. This is a non-invasive, low cost procedure. The main finding on transcranial sonography in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease is an increased echogenicity of the mesencephalic substantia nigra region.

Objective: To identify the effect of levodopa in language areas in Parkinson's disease patients.

Methods: We evaluated 50 patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease, age and gender paired to 47 healthy volunteers. We selected two homogeneous groups of 18 patients taking levodopa and 7 no levodopa patients.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is more common among PD patients than in the general population. This association may be explained by psychosocial mechanisms but it is also possible that neurobiological mechanism underlying PD can predispose to SAD. The aim of this study was to investigate a possible dopaminergic mechanism involved in PD patients with SAD, by correlating striatal dopamine transporter binding potential (DAT-BP) with intensity of social anxiety symptoms in PD patients using SPECT with TRODAT-1 as the radiopharmaceutical.

LRRK2 mutations can cause familial and sporadic Parkinson's disease (PD) with Lewy-body pathology at post-mortem. Studies of olfaction in LRRK2 are sparse and incongruent. We applied a previously validated translation of the 16 item smell identification test from Sniffin' Sticks (SS-16) to 14 parkinsonian carriers of heterozygous G2019S LRRK2 mutation and compared with 106 PD patients and 118 healthy controls.

Rationale: Depression is a frequent non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) with increasing rates with the progression of the disease. Molecular imaging studies have shown a reduction of dopamine transporter (DAT) density in depressed PD patients (dPD); however, DAT role in the pathophysiology of PD depression is not clear since clinical matching was inappropriate and DAT reduction could be attributed to PD severity.

Objectives: To further examine the role of DAT in PD depression, this study compared thoroughly matched depressed vs.

Despite its relatively high prevalence Parkinson's Disease (PD) is still misdiagnosed in approximately 25% of cases. In this study our aim was to evaluate patients with Clinically Unclear Parkinsonian Syndromes (CUPS) submitted to brain SPECT imaging using the technetium-99m labeled Dopamine Transporter (DAT) tracer TRODAT-1. We recruited 15 subjects with CUPS and matched them with 13 patients with probable PD and 13 healthy control subjects (HCS).

Objectives: To evaluate patients with "clinically established" psychogenic parkinsonism (PsyP) using single-photon emission computer tomography (SPECT) with the technetium-99m labeled tracer TRODAT-1, a dopamine transporter (DAT) ligand, and investigate whether these patients have an underlying degenerative parkinsonism.

Patients And Methods: Five patients with PsyP were assessed using demographic data, standard clinical scales for Parkinson's Disease (PD), and a neuropsychiatric interview. DAT imaging using SPECT with TRODAT-1 was performed, and values for caudate/putamen DAT binding potentials (BP) registered.

Parkinson's disease (PD) etiology has been attributed both to genetic and environmental factors, although the exact mechanisms of its pathogenesis remains elusive. We investigated Brazilian early-onset PD (EOPD) patients with PINK1 polymorphisms (SNPs) in order to find possible correlations between SNPs, environmental exposure, and disease age of onset. We enrolled 48 patients and 61 controls.

Data on the frequency of PINK1 mutations in Brazilian patients with early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) are lacking. The aim of this report was to investigate mutations of the PINK1 gene in a cohort of Brazilian patients with EOPD. Sixty consecutive familial or sporadic EOPD patients were included.

The Hospício de Juquery, near the city of São Paulo (Brazil) was founded in 1896 and after few years it was decided that the institution should have the best possible facilities to study neuropathology. In 1921, a young psychiatrist, Antonio Carlos Pacheco e Silva was sent to the Hôpital de la Salpêtrière (Paris) to study neuropathology. There, Pacheco e Silva (later Prof.

Objective: To describe clinical and neuroimaging (SPECT) characteristics of Brazilian patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and mutations in PARK2 or PARK8 genes.

Method: A total of 119 patients meeting clinical criteria for PD were evaluated.

Results: Of all patients studied, 13 had mutations in either PARK2 (n=9) or PARK8 genes (n=4).

Background: The diagnosis of Parkinson disease (PD) is based on clinical criteria but misdiagnosis is as high as 25% of cases as confirmed by anatomic-pathologic studies. Since the introduction of in vivo molecular imaging techniques using Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography and Positron Emission Tomography, the diagnosis of PD became more reliable by assessing dopaminergic and even nondopaminergic systems.

Review Summary: The purpose of this article is to critically review the current data on molecular neuroimaging focusing on the nigrostriatal circuitry and providing useful information on the role of these new imaging techniques in the management of clinically unclear cases of PD.

Parkinson's disease (PD) etiology has been attributed both to genetic and environmental factors. In this study, we investigated Brazilian early-onset PD (EOPD) patients for mutations in PARK2 and PARK8, exposure to environmental factors and possible correlations between PARK2 polymorphisms, environmental exposure, and disease age of onset. We enrolled 72 EOPD index patients and 81 healthy volunteers.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that is mainly caused by dopaminergic neuron loss in the substantia nigra. Several nuclear medicine radiotracers have been developed to evaluate PD diagnoses and disease evolution in vivo in PD patients. Positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon computerized emission tomography (SPECT) radiotracers for the dopamine transporter (DAT) provide good markers for the integrity of the presynaptic dopaminergic system affected in PD.
