[Myocardial infarction, stroke, and psoriasis: A systematic review of observational studies].

Patients with psoriasis can have higher rates of hypertension, diabetes mellitus 2, and dyslipidemia. This study aimed to assess the association between psoriasis, myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke. A systematic review was carried out using PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and LILACS databases searching for observational studies that assessed stroke and/or MI in patients diagnosed with psoriasis vulgaris compared to non-psoriatic patients.

Interaction between the impact of the Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and demographic characteristics on sexual/erectile dysfunction in Latin America: cross-sectional study.

Aim: Our objective was to investigate whether there is an interaction between the COVID-19 pandemic, demographic characteristics and erectile/sexual (E/S) function in individuals from Latin America.

Materials And Methods: Cross-sectional study which included Latin American individuals over 18 years old, recruited through social media and interviewed between July and August 2020 by online surveys (Google Forms) in Portuguese and Spanish languages. The E/S function was evaluated through the following questionnaires: Simplified International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI); while post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic was assessed through the Impact of Event Scale Revised (IES-R).

Mental Health Training Programs for Non-Health Professionals and Volunteers Working with Asylum Seekers and Refugees: A Scoping Review Protocol.

The number of people forcibly displaced worldwide is increasing. It is an imperative challenge to provide mental health training for non-health professionals and volunteers who work with those vulnerable populations. The objective is to identify mental health training programs for non-health professionals and volunteers, without mental health training, to work with asylum seekers or refugees in any context.

Gait and functionality of individuals with visual impairment who participate in sports.

Background: Individuals with visual impairment (VI) have often been observed to walk slower than individuals with unimpaired vision. These observations might be confounded by typical low levels of physical activity and greater sedentary behavior in individuals with VI than the overall population.

Research Question: Here, we compared gait and balance measures between individuals with VI who participate in disability sports, and activity level matched sighted individuals.

Diffuse pulmonary ossification: A case report.

Diffuse pulmonary ossification (DPO) is a rarely diagnosed entity that may present with characteristic imaging features. It is listed in the differential diagnosis of lung parenchymal calcifications and should be considered by the radiologist if the appropriate findings are identified. We report a case of DPO secondary to mitral stenosis in a patient whose severe cardiac pathology lead to death few weeks after a chest CT was done.

Accuracy of the estimation of glomerular filtration rate within a population of critically ill patients.

Background: Accuracy of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimates has been questioned and several authors recommend routine use of measured renal creatinine clearance (CLCR) as a surrogate of GFR in the intensive care unit (ICU). Our purpose was to compare estimates of GFR using Cockroft-Gault (CG), Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study (MDRD) equations with 8h-CLCR, within a population of critically ill patients with a wide range of measured CLCR.

Methods: Through a prospective, observational study of 54 patients with normal serum creatinine (sCr) admitted to ICU, daily 8h-CLCR (reference method) and GFR estimates (644 paired samples) were matched and compared.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV in association with a (c.970G>A) mutation in the COL3A1 gene.

The Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV (EDS-IV) is a hereditary, autosomal dominant disease that causes a defect in the procollagen III synthesis, which results in a structural modification in this protein. An awareness of the disease is of vital importance for the optimal outcome, since the affected individuals have a high risk of vascular, intestinal and uterine rupture. It's a disease with great clinical variability and the diagnosis is confirmed by detection of a mutation in the gene encoding collagen type III.

Long-term facial artery catheter implantation for serial arterial blood sampling and invasive arterial blood pressure measurement in horses.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate surgical catheter implantation in the facial artery of horses and the long-term maintenance of such arteries using heparin and ascorbic acid as filling solution. Nine horses were implanted with a polyurethane catheter. The catheters were flushed with a heparin/ascorbic acid solution every 8h and remained patent for 25 days.

Fast volumetric registration method for tumor follow-up in pulmonary CT exams.

An oncological patient may go through several tomographic acquisitions during a period of time, needing an appropriate registration. We propose an automatic volumetric intrapatient registration method for tumor follow-up in pulmonary CT exams. The performance of our method is evaluated and compared with other registration methods based on optimization techniques.

Rosai-Dorfman disease manifesting as a mediastinal mass with calcifications.

Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, also known as Rosai-Dorfman disease, is a rare entity predominantly affecting children and young adults, characterized in 95% of patients by painless bilateral cervical limphadenopathy. We report the case of a 30-year-old female with an anterior mediastinal mass due to lymph node enlargement, which showed calcifications on computed tomography. To our knowledge, calcification in lymphadenopathy, as is present in this case, has never been described in Rosai-Dorfman disease.

Sarcoidosis: a less common presentation.

The clinical presentation of sarcoidosis is diverse and in over 90% of patients there is pulmonary involvement. The most common features of the radiographic findings at the time of diagnosis are bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy and pulmonary infiltration. The authors report the case of a young female patient who presented with multiple bilateral nodular shadows on chest radiograph.

Tuberculosis of the chest.

The relationship between tuberculosis and mankind has been known for many centuries, with the disease being one of the major causes of illness and death. During the early 1980s, there was a widespread belief that the disease was being controlled, but by the mid-1980s, the number of cases increased. This change in the epidemiological picture has several causes, of which the AIDS epidemic, the progression of poverty in developing countries, the increase in the number of elderly people with an altered immune status and the emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis are the most important.

Quantitative evaluation of a pulmonary contour segmentation algorithm in X-ray computed tomography images.

Rationale And Objectives: Pulmonary contour extraction from thoracic x-ray computed tomography images is a mandatory preprocessing step in many automated or semiautomated analysis tasks. This study was conducted to quantitatively assess the performance of a method for pulmonary contour extraction and region identification.

Materials And Methods: The automatically extracted contours were statistically compared with manually drawn pulmonary contours detected by six radiologists on a set of 30 images.

Cytotoxic activity of metal complexes of biogenic polyamines: polynuclear platinum(II) chelates.

Several polynuclear Pt(II) chelates with biogenic polyamines were synthesized and screened for their potential antiproliferative and cytotoxic activity in different human cancer cell lines. To gather information regarding the structure-activity relationships underlying their biological activity, the complexes studied were designed to differ in geometrical parameters such as the nature of the ligand and the number and chemical environment of the metal centers. Distinct effects were found for different cell lines and different structural characteristics of the complexes; chelates II, III, and IV displayed specificity toward the HeLa and HSC-3 epithelial-type cells, while V, VI, and VII were clearly more effective against the THP-1, MOLT-3, and CCRF-CEM leukemia cell lines.
