Objectives: To evaluate cost-effective pharmacological treatment in adult kidney transplant recipients from the perspective of the Colombian health system.

Methods: A decision tree model for the induction phase and a Markov model for the maintenance phase were built. A review of the clinical literature was conducted to extract probabilities, and the life-years were used as the outcome.

Three different cuts of meat samples: inside skirt, knuckles, and sirloin were picture captioned on the first and fifth day after purchase. From each type of meat cut, ten pictures were taken at the beginning and the end of the studied shelf life, obtaining 60 different images. The images were taken under control variables in a black acrylic cabin.

Background: Early identification of germline mutation carriers may be relevant for the optimal management of prostate cancer and to inform cancer risk in relatives. However, population minorities have limited access to genetic testing. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency of DNA repair gene pathogenic variants (PVs) among Mexican men with prostate cancer referred for Genomic Cancer Risk Assessment and testing.

Like most of the world, low- and middle-income countries have faced a growing demand for new health technologies and higher budget constraints. It is necessary to have technical instruments to make decisions based on real-world evidence that allows maximization of the population's health with a limited budget. We estimated the supply-based cost-effectiveness elasticity, which was then used to determine the cost-effectiveness threshold for the healthcare system of Colombia, a middle-income country where multiple insurers, paid under capitation rules, manage the compulsory contributions of the citizens and government subsidies.

Purpose: To cross-compare three software packages (SPs)-Carimas, FlowQuant, and PMOD-to quantify myocardial perfusion at global, regional, and segmental levels.

Materials And Methods: Stress N-13 ammonia PET scans of 48 patients with HCM were analyzed in three centers using Carimas, FlowQuant, and PMOD. Values agreed if they had an ICC > 0.

Fully inverted atoms placed at exactly the same location synchronize as they deexcite, and light is emitted in a burst (known as "Dicke's superradiance"). We investigate the role of finite interatomic separation on correlated decay in mesoscopic chains and provide an understanding in terms of collective jump operators. We show that the superradiant burst survives at small distances, despite Hamiltonian dipole-dipole interactions.

Background: Cytotoxic chemotherapy can cure advanced germ cell tumors. Nevertheless, cancer treatment may induce cellular senescence and accelerate molecular aging. The aging process implies an increase of cells expressing p16 and changes in lymphocyte subpopulations.

Background: Whipple's disease is a rare systemic disease caused by a gram-positive bacillus called Tropheryma whipplei. First described in 1907 as an intestinal lipodystrophy with histological finding of vacuoles in the macrophages of the intestinal mucous. Usually the symptoms are localized according to the compromised organ.

Article Synopsis
  • High-content phenotypic screening is preferred for drug discovery because it provides detailed, drug-specific data, but existing methods in epigenetics lacked sensitivity.
  • A new method called Microscopic Imaging of Epigenetic Landscapes (MIEL) has been developed to visualize and differentiate nuclear staining patterns of epigenetic marks using machine learning.
  • MIEL was tested on various cell lines and successfully identified and ranked drugs that induce beneficial epigenetic changes in glioblastoma treatments without being toxic.

The effects of in vivo cocoa-based supplementation were studied as a preconditioning treatment for ex vivo acute oxidative conditions in a controlled randomized clinical trial. Subjects were 100 healthy young men at Universidad Industrial de Santander blinded to the intervention and divided into two groups: The intervention group (n = 50) receiving 30 g of cocoa powder and 50 g of dark chocolate/d for 1 week with the remaining subjects receiving placebo. Cocoa products preconditioning for 1 week resulted in modifications in the susceptibility of plasma lipids over ex vivo oxidative conditions with effects of i) a significant increase in the oxidative resistance of plasma lipids measured by dienes formation (4.

Light that carries linear or angular momentum can interact with a mechanical object, giving rise to optomechanical effects. In particular, a photon can transfer its intrinsic angular momentum to an object when the object either absorbs the photon or changes the photon polarization, as in an action/reaction force pair. Here, we demonstrate resonant driving of torsional mechanical modes of a single-mode tapered optical nanofiber using spin angular momentum.

Achalasia is a motility disorder of the esophagus that might be secondary to a chronic infection. Several studies have investigated esophageal achalasia in patients with Chagas disease (CD) in Latin America, but no related studies have been performed in Colombia. The goals of the present study were to determine the presence of anti- antibodies in patients with esophageal achalasia who visited a referral hospital in Bogotá, Colombia, and to detect the presence of the parasite and its discrete typing units (DTUs).

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which lymphocytes target putative myelin antigens in the CNS, causing inflammation and neurodegeneration. Fingolimod (FTY720) is an immunosuppressive drug used as a second line therapy for relapsing forms of MS due to its safety profile and good response to treatment. Despite its safety, there are still concerns about the possibility of Fingolimod being linked to the development of opportunistic infections like disseminated varicella zoster infections and herpes simplex encephalitis.

The evanescent field outside an optical nanofiber (ONF) can create optical traps for neutral atoms. We present a non-destructive method to characterize such trapping potentials. An off-resonance linearly polarized probe beam that propagates through the ONF experiences a slow axis of polarization produced by trapped atoms on opposite sides along the ONF.

Background: To establish, from the health system perspective, the cost-utility relationship of limb reconstruction compared with primary amputation for patients older than 32 years with grade IIIB and IIIC severe lower limb trauma in Colombia, S.A.

Methods: A Markov model was built including different short-term and long-term states that represent the main events that a patient could experience after a lower limb amputation or a reconstruction.

Background: The use of a prophylactic antibiotic in an amputation surgery is a key element for the successful recovery of the patient. We aim to determine, from the perspective of the Colombian health system, the cost-effectiveness of administering a prophylactic antibiotic among patients undergoing lower limb amputation due to diabetes or vascular illness in Colombia.

Methods: A decision tree was constructed to compare the use and nonuse of a prophylactic antibiotic.

Introduction: Ondansetron reduces hospitalization rates for diarrhea and vomiting in children, but is not yet routinely used.

Objective: To estimate from a social perspective the relative cost-effectiveness of ondansetron for the treatment of vomiting in children with gastroenteritis and at risk of dehydration in Colombia.

Methods: Cost-effectiveness analysis from a social perspective, including direct medical costs and costs for caregivers.

Introduction: Motor development is the acquisition and evolution of motor skills; its evaluation allows detection of abnormalities and permits a suitable opportunity for bringing them to medical attention. Several instruments have been designed to characterize motor development in early childhood, among them the Neurosensory Motor Development Assessment test. In Colombia, studies on the psychometric properties have not been published on any of these tests.

Objective: To validate a method for the presumptive diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis based on the observation of clinical-epidemiological criteria, carried out by community health workers in three endemic municipalities in Santander, a department in northeastern Colombia.

Methods: This evaluation study of diagnostic technologies was based on a cross-sectional sampling of suspected cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the municipalities of Rionegro, El Playón, and Landázuri. After being trained, the community health workers carried out the presumptive diagnoses of cutaneous leishmaniasis between October 2004 and November 2005.
