Policy evaluation using model over-fitting: the Nordic case.

The interest of this article is to better understand the effects of different public policy alternatives to handle the COVID-19 pandemic. In this work we use the susceptible, infected, recovered (SIR) model to find which of these policies have an actual impact on the dynamic of the spread. Starting with raw data on the number of deceased people in a country, we over-fit our SIR model to find the times at which the main parameters, the number of daily contacts and the probability of contagion, require adjustments.

Biorthogonal labelling with fluorescent small molecules is an indispensable tool for diagnostic and biomedical applications. In dye-based 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) cell proliferation assays, augmentation of the fluorescent signal entails an overall enhancement in the sensitivity and quality of the method. To this end, a rapid, divergent synthetic procedure that provides ready-to-click pH-insensitive rhodamine dyes exhibiting outstanding brightness was established.

Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 Inhibitors and Diabetic Kidney Disease: A Narrative Review.

Diabetic kidney disease is one of the most frequent complications in patients with diabetes mellitus and affects morbidity and mortality. The recent therapies include oral hypoglycemic drugs that, in addition to optimizing glycemic control and reducing the risk of hypoglycemia, may affect the development and progression of diabetic kidney disease; these novel therapies include inhibitors of the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4), a group of oral hypoglycemic therapeutic agents that act at the level of the incretin system. DPP-4 inhibitors show additional pleiotropic effects in in vitro models, reducing inflammation, fibrosis, and oxidative damage, further suggesting potential kidney protective effects.

Orally-transmitted Chagas disease: Epidemiological, clinical, serological and molecular outcomes of a school microepidemic in Chichiriviche de la Costa, Venezuela.

Oral transmission of is a frequent cause of acute Chagas disease (ChD). In the present cross-sectional study, we report the epidemiological, clinical, serological and molecular outcomes of the second largest outbreak of oral ChD described in the literature. It occurred in March 2009 in Chichiriviche de la Costa, a rural seashore community at the central littoral in Venezuela.

The place of the unknown in the Medical Humanities.

In the birth and development of the Medical Humanities, literature has played a crucial role, both as an educational resource and as an analytical device. This article proposes an appraisal of this approach by focussing on a model literary situation. Taking the move from Alberto Barrera Tyszka's novel La enfermedad [The illness], the authors identify and explore some of the "places of ignorance" that can emerge in the doctor-patient relationship, as potentially in any form of intersubjective encounter.

This paper, based on case studies, aims to present some aspects of the animal magnetism that developed in the Germany of the first decades of the nineteenth century. These aspects constitute, or at least imply, important innovations within the framework of contemporary medical practice and consist of: the recognition of the importance of the words of patients and their own knowledge of their bodies; the emergence of the figure of woman as an independent and singular subject in which the aspects indicated above are emphasized; and, finally, the latent potential of this medical theory for reform within the framework of policy.

A symbolic defence of animal magnetism: a copperplate engraving by Ludwig Richter as the frontispiece of the account of somnambulist Auguste K. (1843).

The year 1843 saw the publication in Dresden of a comprehensive account of the magnetic treatment of a somnambulist. This date came relatively late in the history of animal magnetism in Germany, and coincided with the decline of the theory in medical circles. Perhaps it was for this reason that the authors commissioned Ludwig Richter, one of the most accomplished engravers of the day, to produce a plate of illustrations which were intended to act as a symbolic defence of the theory.
