Article Synopsis
  • Latissimus dorsi tendon transfer (LDTT) has been shown to improve shoulder function and reduce pain over a long-term period, particularly in patients with irreparable massive rotator cuff tears, although those with fatty infiltration of certain muscles may have worse outcomes.
  • This study followed 143 patients who underwent LDTT between 2004 and 2013, collecting data on complications and outcomes after a minimum of 10 years, with some patients ultimately needing further surgery (reverse shoulder arthroplasty).
  • Out of the tracked patients, 101 were evaluated at an average of 12.3 years post-surgery, providing valuable long-term insights into the effectiveness of LDTT in enhancing shoulder mobility and function.

Despite the high creation cost, annotated corpora are indispensable for robust natural language processing systems. In the clinical field, in addition to annotating medical entities, corpus creators must also remove personally identifiable information (PII). This has become increasingly important in the era of large language models where unwanted memorization can occur.

A new practical method has been developed for the α-heteroarylation of aliphatic nitriles with heteroarenes and azobis(alkylcarbonitriles) using Cu(OAc) as an oxidizing agent. This method allows the easy construction of nitrile-, aryl-, and dialkyl-bearing quaternary carbon centers from readily available building blocks, without requiring prefunctionalization steps. This reaction is based on adding cyanodialkyl radicals onto heteroarenes, including benzofurans, furans, pyrroles, and indoles.

Background: Chronic non-specific neck pain (CNNP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder known for its significant disability and economic burden, ranking second only to low back pain in musculoskeletal conditions. Physical therapy offers effective interventions for CNNP, including low-level laser therapy (LLLT). High-intensity laser therapy (HILT) is a recent treatment for musculoskeletal pain, but studies that support its use in CNNP are limited.

Background: We investigated the personal philosophies of eight persons with a tetraplegic condition (four male, four female), all living in Sweden with a chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) and all reporting a good life. Our purpose was to discover if there is a philosophical mindset that may play a role in living a good life with a traumatic SCI.

Methods: Two rounds of in-depth qualitative interviews were performed by the same interviewer, a philosophical practitioner by training (de Miranda).

Grounded in ideas about sense-making and whole-person care with a long intellectual heritage, the movement for Philosophical Health-with its specific conceptions of philosophical care and counselling-is a relatively recent addition to the ongoing debate about understanding better the perspectives of patients to improve health practice. This article locates the development of this movement within the context of broader discussions of person-centred care (PCC), arguing that the approach advocated by defenders of philosophical health can provide a straightforward method for implementing PCC in actual cases. This claim is explained and defended with reference to the SMILE_PH method created by Luis de Miranda (Sense-Making Interviews Looking at Elements of Philosophical Health), an approach recently trialled convincingly with people living with traumatic spinal cord injury.

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a low-cost, structurally reliable, and environmentally friendly surface modification method for orthopedic and dental implants. This technique is successful for the formation of porous, corrosion-resistant, and bioactive coatings, besides introducing antimicrobial compounds easily. Given the increase in implant-related infections, antimicrobial PEO-treated surfaces have been widely proposed to surmount this public health concern.
