2 million children and adolescents between 11 and 19 years old have not yet finished basic education and had left school. The current Brazilian scenario reflects the reality in which these children and adolescents are inserted, without sufficient resources for the continuity of basic or elementary education, and often the parents' lack of income leads these young people to seek work, as can be seen in several capitals and inland cities: children selling food at traffic lights, bars, restaurants, and similar situations5. According to a study carried out by Abrinq Foundation (Fundação Abrinq), in the last quarter of 2021, there were about 2.

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical, tomographic, and histological performance of collagenated xenogeneic bone blocks (CXBB) in horizontal bone augmentations for implant placement. Five patients with an absence of the 4 upper incisors and an HAC 3 horizontal bone defect, with a remaining of 3 to 5 mm, underwent a bone-grafting procedure with CXBB (test group [TG], n = 5) and autogenous graft (control group [CG], n = 5), with one type of graft used on the right side and other type on the left side. Changes in bone thickness and density (tomographic evaluation), levels of complications (clinically), and distribution pattern between mineralized and nonmineralized tissue (histomorphometrically) were analyzed.

In the current pandemic scenario, vaccines for children have been scientifically approved; however, there is a challenge faced globally: parents' hesitation about vaccinating their children for COVID-19, which can hamper adherence to vaccine campaigns. This issue is due to the lack of information or access to fake news that affects the parents' power of judgment. The experience of the vaccine process with Pfizer's immunizer in several countries successfully reduced the number of hospitalized and prevented hundreds of child deaths from COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • Horizontal bone loss following tooth extraction often requires reconstruction, and this study aimed to evaluate horizontal alveolar bone status in both partially and completely toothless patients using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
  • The analysis involved 1516 CBCT scans from 1404 adults, classifying horizontal bone defects into four categories (HAC 1 to HAC 4), with a notable distribution among partially edentulous patients showing mostly HAC 1 and less severe conditions.
  • Results indicated that completely edentulous patients had a higher prevalence of severe conditions (HAC 3 and HAC 4), suggesting they often lack cancellous bone, particularly in HAC 4, compared to those who are partially edentulous.

We review our work on a contrast-based computational model of surprise and its applications. The review is contextualized within related research from psychology, philosophy, and particularly artificial intelligence. Influenced by psychological theories of surprise, the model assumes that surprise-eliciting events initiate a series of cognitive processes that begin with the appraisal of the event as unexpected, continue with the interruption of ongoing activity and the focusing of attention on the unexpected event, and culminate in the analysis and evaluation of the event and the revision of beliefs.

Background: Wearable cameras are a new type of intervention aimed at stimulating memory in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Such passive external memory aids have started to be considered as alternatives to both more active external aids (such as writing in diaries, journals, and timetables) and to internal cognitive strategies (such as spaced retrieval, errorless learning).

Objective: In order to understand the benefits of these innovative devices for memory compensation, the present experiment examined the effectiveness of two memory training strategies: SenseCam, a wearable camera, a passive external memory aid and a memory training programme (MEMO+) created from tasks known to stimulate memory, in comparison with a control condition, a personal written diary.
