Management and production characteristics impact conception rate to first service (CR1S) in small-scale dairy farms, but the impact of body condition score (BCS) and milk production levels on cows' fertility is unknown. Our objective is to determine the effect of BCS and milk production on CR1S in small-scale dairy farms of western Mexico. Logistic regression models are used to determine the effect of BCS (at calving and first service), 60-d and 305-d milk production, protein and fat production, lactation number, and days at first service on CR1S.

Article Synopsis
  • Several studies indicate that low reproductive performance on small-scale dairy farms impacts profitability, making it crucial to identify related risk factors to enhance reproductive management.
  • The research involved 96 dairy farms and data from 1,263 lactations, employing logistic regression to analyze the association and impact of various risk factors on reproductive outcomes.
  • Key findings revealed that assisted calving, having a male calf, low body condition score at calving, and retained fetal membranes were significant risk factors contributing to reproductive issues in these farms located in tropical and subtropical regions of Mexico.
