A simple extended finite field nuclear relaxation procedure for calculating vibrational contributions to degenerate four-wave mixing (also known as the intensity-dependent refractive index) is presented. As a by-product one also obtains the static vibrationally averaged linear polarizability, as well as the first and second hyperpolarizability. The methodology is validated by illustrative calculations on the water molecule.

A nonheme iron catalyst catalyzed stereoselective oxidation of alkanes with H2O2 with remarkable efficiency and exhibiting an unprecedented high incorporation of water into the oxidized products. The present results challenge the canonical description of oxygenases, the standard oxo-hydroxo tautomerism that applies to heme systems and serves as a precedent for alternative pathways for the oxidation of hydrocarbons at nonheme iron oxygenases.

Circular cymbal ultrasound arrays have been shown to be effective in delivering therapeutic levels of insulin in rats, rabbits, and pigs. To improve delivery efficiency, a rectangular cymbal design was desired in order to achieve a broader spatial intensity field without increasing the size of the device or the spatial-peak temporal-peak intensity (I(SPTP)). With a similar intensity (50 mWcm(2)), the goal was to determine if the 3x1 rectangular cymbal array could perform significantly better than the 3x3 circular array for glucose reduction in hyperglycemic rabbits.

Although rhabdomyosarcoma is the most frequent soft tissue tumor in children, there are extremely few reports of this tumor arising from the urachus. The authors describe another case in a 6-year-old female associated with constipation and a painless suprapubic mass. The specimen had the pathological criteria used to define urachal sarcoma (cytological, histological, and immunohistochemical findings) and urachal remnants were not observed.

The vibrational configuration interaction method used to obtain static vibrational (hyper)polarizabilities is extended to dynamic nonlinear optical properties in the infinite optical frequency approximation. Illustrative calculations are carried out on H(2)O and NH(3). The former molecule is weakly anharmonic while the latter contains a strongly anharmonic umbrella mode.

Two rosemary accessions were subjected to chilling temperatures in control environmental cabins analyzing their variations in rosmarinic and carnosic acids together with their adaptability to these stress conditions. Cold stressed plants of both accessions showed increases in caffeic acid and carnosic acid concentration levels, while other secondary metabolites such as rosmarinic acid, naringin, cirsimaritin, hispidulin, and carnosol showed different responses in both accessions. In addition, cold stressed plants exhibited significant reductions in chlorophylls, beta-carotene, and violaxanthin levels as well as the maximum quantum yield of PSII in both accessions.

The glycoantigen sialyl-Lewis x (sLex) and its isomer sialy-Lewis a (sLea) are frequently associated with advanced states of cancer and metastasis. In a previous work, we have shown that hepatocarcinoma cells (HCC) HepG2 interact with the endothelial E-selectin exclusively through sLe(x) oligosaccharides, the synthesis of which could be completely prevented by the alpha(1,2)-fucosyltransferase-I (FUT1), thus resulting in a strong inhibition of adhesion and rolling on activated endothelial cells. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the impact of inhibiting sLex synthesis and the subsequent E-selectin adhesion, on HCC tumor growth in nude mice.

Both the Levantine Corridor and the Horn of Africa route have figured prominently in early hominid migrations from Africa to Eurasia. To gauge the importance of these two African-Asian thoroughfares in the demic movements of modern man, we surveyed the mtDNA control region variation and coding polymorphisms of 739 individuals representing ten African and Middle Eastern populations. Two of these collections, Egypt and Yemen, are geographically close to the Levant and Horn of Africa, respectively.

The mtDNA composition of two Muslim sects from the northern Indian province of Uttar Pradesh, the Sunni and Shia, have been delineated using sequence information from hypervariable regions 1 and 2 (HVI and HVII, respectively) as well as coding region polymorphisms. A comparison of this data to that from Middle Eastern, Central Asian, North East African, and other Indian groups reveals that, at the mtDNA haplogroup level, both of these Indo-Sunni and Indo-Shia populations are more similar to each other and other Indian groups than to those from the other regions. In addition, these two Muslim sects exhibit a conspicuous absence of West Asian mtDNA haplogroups suggesting that their maternal lineages are of Indian origin.

Integrins play an essential role in endothelial cell motility processes during angiogenesis and thus present interesting targets for the development of new anti-angiogenic agents. Snake venoms naturally contain a variety of proteins that can affect integrin-ligand interactions. Recently, the C-type lectin proteins (CLPs) have been characterized as efficient modulators of integrin functions.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp), an ABC-transporter highly expressed in brain capillaries, protects the brain by extruding xenobiotics. However, its overexpression has also been associated with the multidrug resistance phenotype in tumors. Here, we have investigated the regulation of P-gp transport activity by sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK-1) in brain endothelial cells.

Integrins are essential protagonists in the complex multistep process of cancer progression and metastasis. We recently reported that lebectin, a novel C-type lectin from Macrovipera lebetina venom, displays an anti-integrin activity. In this study, we extend this observation to lebecetin, a second C-type lectin isolated from the same venom and previously reported as a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation.

A molecular bipaddled flipper based on a tetradentate chiral Cu complex has been designed. The paddling motion of this unprecedented molecular-scale machine can be controlled by reversible oxidation of the metal center. Kinetic and computational (density functional theory) analyses provide a detailed picture of the flipper motion at the molecular scale, rationalize the switching role of the metal-ion oxidation state, and pose the basis for the fine-tuning of the dynamic motion of this new class of molecular-scale devices.

We have implemented our new procedure for computing Franck-Condon factors utilizing vibrational configuration interaction based on a vibrational self-consistent field reference. Both Duschinsky rotations and anharmonic three-mode coupling are taken into account. Simulations of the first ionization band of ClO(2) and C(4)H(4)O (furan) using up to quadruple excitations in treating anharmonicity are reported and analyzed.

Our research group has recently defined two new aromaticity indexes based on the analysis of electron delocalization in aromatic species using the quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules. One of these indexes is the para-delocalization index (PDI) that measures the electronic delocalization between para-related carbon atoms in six-membered rings. In this paper, we show that this index can be partitioned into individual molecular orbital contributions.

Using a new unconventional procedure for calculating Franck-Condon factors with anharmonicity fully included the X 2A2<--X 1A1 band in the photoelectron spectrum of furan (and deuterated furan) was simulated at the second-order perturbation theory level. All 21 vibrational modes were considered but, in the end, only 4 are required to accurately reproduce the spectrum. Except for our own recent work on ethylene such calculations have been previously limited to tri- or tetraatomic molecules.
