In the era of data-driven machine learning algorithms, data is the new oil. For the most optimal results, datasets should be large, heterogeneous and, crucially, correctly labeled. However, data collection and labeling are time-consuming and labor-intensive processes.

The evolution of the optical absorptive effects exhibited by plasmonic nanoparticles was systematically analyzed by electronic signals modulated by a Rössler attractor system. A sol-gel approach was employed for the preparation of the studied Au nanoparticles embedded in a TiO thin solid film. The inclusion of the nanoparticles in an inhomogeneous biological sample integrated by human cells deposited in an ITO glass substrate was evaluated with a high level of sensitivity using an opto-electronic chaotic circuit.

Characterization of driving maneuvers or driving styles through motion sensors has become a field of great interest. Before now, this characterization used to be carried out with signals coming from extra equipment installed inside the vehicle, such as On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) devices or sensors in pedals. Nowadays, with the evolution and scope of smartphones, these have become the devices for recording mobile signals in many driving characterization applications.

Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by frequent cessation of breathing lasting 10 seconds or longer. The diagnosis of OSA is performed through an expensive procedure, which requires an overnight stay at the hospital. This has led to several proposals based on the analysis of patients' facial images and speech recordings as an attempt to develop simpler and cheaper methods to diagnose OSA.

Background: Sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by recurring breathing pauses during sleep caused by a blockage of the upper airway (UA). The altered UA structure or function in OSA speakers has led to hypothesize the automatic analysis of speech for OSA assessment. In this paper we critically review several approaches using speech analysis and machine learning techniques for OSA detection, and discuss the limitations that can arise when using machine learning techniques for diagnostic applications.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by recurring breathing pauses during sleep caused by a blockage of the upper airway (UA). OSA is generally diagnosed through a costly procedure requiring an overnight stay of the patient at the hospital. This has led to proposing less costly procedures based on the analysis of patients' facial images and voice recordings to help in OSA detection and severity assessment.

This paper describes an exploratory technique to identify mild dementia by assessing the degree of speech deficits. A total of twenty participants were used for this experiment, ten patients with a diagnosis of mild dementia and ten participants like healthy control. The audio session for each subject was recorded following a methodology developed for the present study.

Purpose: To evaluate the strain fields and to calculate the modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio of trabecular bone of the 6 lumbar vertebrae of the porcine spine by a 2-dimensional digital image correlation (2D DIC).

Methods: This study was performed through a 2D DIC technique and the specimens were tested under compression. The resulting images were analyzed numerically by 2D DIC.

Objectives: We investigated whether differences in formants and their bandwidths, previously reported comparing small sample population of healthy individuals and patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), are detected on a larger population representative of a clinical practice scenario. We examine possible indirect or mediated effects of clinical variables, which may shed some light on the connection between speech and OSA.

Study Design: In a retrospective study, 241 male subjects suspected to suffer from OSA were examined.

Ongoing Sensor Web developments make a growing amount of heterogeneous sensor data available to smart devices. This is generating an increasing demand for homogeneous mechanisms to access, publish and share real-world information. This paper discusses, first, an architectural solution based on Next Generation Networks: a pilot Telco Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) Platform that embeds several OGC® Sensor Web services.

Current "Internet of Things" concepts point to a future where connected objects gather meaningful information about their environment and share it with other objects and people. In particular, objects embedding Human Machine Interaction (HMI), such as mobile devices and, increasingly, connected vehicles, home appliances, urban interactive infrastructures, etc., may not only be conceived as sources of sensor information, but, through interaction with their users, they can also produce highly valuable context-aware human-generated observations.
