The giant anteater () is a neotropical mammal considered to be vulnerable to extinction. Recent increased interest in veterinary care in the giant anteater has prompted renewed interest in anatomical descriptions in this species. The terrestrial habits and slow movements of the giant anteater contribute to its susceptibility to vehicular trauma on highways, which is a significant cause of mortality in the species.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: This study compared, through biomechanical evaluation under ventral flexion load, four surgical techniques for ventral stabilization of the atlantoaxial joint in dogs.
Methods: In total, 28 identical atlantoaxial joint models were created by digital printing from computed tomography images of a dog, and the specimens were divided into four groups of seven. In each group, a different technique for ventral stabilization of the atlantoaxial joint was performed: transarticular lag screws, polyaxial screws, multiple screws and bone cement (polymethylmethacrylate-PMMA), and atlantoaxial plate.
Introduction: For birds of prey, the integrity of the beak is extremely important for defence, hygiene, socialization and especially, feeding. This paper describes successful trans-sinus fixation of a lateral deviation of the mandible in a hawk (Caracara plancus).
Case Report: The patient was presented with malnutrition and dehydration due to severe left lateral deviation of gnathotheca, with significant malocclusion.
This report describes the use of synthetic acrylic resin prostheses in five birds with rhinothecal fracture. Satisfactory biomechanical and clinical results were obtained in all cases, enabling early return to function of the beak. The patients, a roadside hawk (; case 1), a cockatiel (; case 2), two turquoise-fronted parrots (; cases 3 and 4), and a maritaca (; case 5), all suffered rhinothecal fractures with extensive bone loss, resulting in malnutrition, dehydration, and difficulty in handling food.

Canine cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a successful technique for the management of hip arthrosis; however, serious potential complications, such as femoral fractures and subsidence of the femoral stem, can occur. Purpose: To use a 3D printed poly (L-lactide) acid (PLLA) and hydroxyapatite (HA) composite as a bone substitute for reconstruction of a critical bone defect in the radius of rabbits.
Methods: A 1.5 cm ostectomy was performed in the radial diaphysis of 60 New Zealand white rabbits.
Objective: Evaluation of the healing and toxicological effects of Dwyer oleoresin (CDO).
Materials And Methods: Rodents with skin lesions were divided into nine groups, including daily treatments with 1, 3 and 10% CDO, collagenase, antibiotic ointment and control groups, for 14 days.
Results: Treatment with 10% CDO reduced skin edema and hyperplasia, demonstrating anti-inflammatory effect of the oil.
The fixation of fractures in wild animals has been a great challenge for veterinarians, because they will inevitably face a unique anatomical characteristic with scarce studies or reports published. Fracture fixation should promote adequate stability and early return to limb function, taking into account biomechanical characteristics of the bones, body weight, and natural habits of wildlife. Three bone fractures from two giant anteaters () referred at the veterinary teaching hospital on different occasions were treated by a double plating technique.

Visceral leishmaniasis is an infectious disease of chronic, emerging and zoonotic nature that presents various degrees of severity. In Brazil, this illness is caused by Leishmania infantum (Leishmania chagasi), which is transmitted by the bite of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis, and dogs are its main reservoir.
